What have you recently realised that’s made you feel like a bit of an idiot?

Mine is that I didn’t know you shouldn’t flush tampons down the toilet...... I swear I remember my mother telling me I could when I first started using them, and that’s what I’ve done for 14 years! It was only through a conversation with a friend (about whether you empty your bathroom bin before the cleaner comes.....) and subsequent google that I’ve found out you shouldn’t.....

So, what have you have you learnt recently that you definitely should have known before?

@maggiso

My combi microwave has a pictogram on the side of the door showing a spoon in a mug- I assumed it meant liquids should be stirred after heating.
That's exactly what it means.

@FromDespairToHere

I thought that was a different word. I actually feel quite thick!
Me too! Am still trying to get my head around it.

I was today years old when I found out that this is actually a saying and not a typo 😳

This is the first and last time that I will be using it.

Just what I was thinking!

Having learned at school that squid are able to project ink into the sea as a defence mechanism when they're attacked, my father vaguely assumed for years that the name of the Sealink ferry company was probably inspired by some similar capability possessed by seals. He'd booked several trips across the Channel to France for our family when I was young before the true derivation suddenly hit him. I was talking to him when the "light-bulb" moment struck: it wasn't often that Dad was seriously embarrassed about anything, but that occasion was one of those times.

@FunTimes2020

I've never heard of "I was today years old". It makes no sense to me!
Who makes this stuff up!
Seriouslymole · 17/03/2021 09:16

@nestlestealswater

I also recently discovered when you snap your fingers, it's not the "snap" of your fingers that makes the noise. It's your middle finger hitting your palm.

When I read this I literally didn't believe you Grin now I'm sat watching my fingers snap like a total twat!

Yup - guilty here too!!
Sgtmajormummy · 17/03/2021 09:16

@BarbaraofSeville Eh? That's literally the recipe to make it. People were eating mayonnaise long before mass food production was a thing.

It’s the ten-second stick blender thing I didn’t know about, not the recipe. I thought mayonnaise needed long slow whisking to avoid it splitting.

You can scan your card at the supermarket via contactless without taking it out of your wallet.

I often take it out then shove it in my pocket only to wear a different coat next time and not have it with me so this is a game changer, for me anyway!

I have more than one contactless card in my wallet, so I don't fancy doing that!

@GaryUnicorn

Did you know that the cream filling in Kit Kats, between the wafers is liquidised Kit Kats, Mis shapes, broken bars etc that were rejected by the Machine that checks every bar for appearance?
Oh did you learn this from that TV show where they went into depth about how kit kats were made? I found that wierdly fascinating!

I recently only realized Humpty Dumpty was an Egg not a POTATO!!!!! Omg, my shock and horror when the realisation sank in!!!! Wtf......lol....Wine
There's nothing in the rhyme to indicate what he (or she) is.

I grew up in Colchester which, during the civil war, was a Royalist town under siege. The story was that Humpty Dumpy was the nickname of the cannon which sat on the town walls and kept the marauding Roundheads at bay. It fell off and broke, and the King's horses and King's men couldn't get the pieces and fix it. So the town was captured and the Royalist leaders executed.

I have no idea how accurate the story is but we were taught it at primary school 40 years ago.

This is such a lame one, but it honestly blew my mind.

It dawned on me last week that Edison screw (ES) light bulbs are named after the inventor, Thomas Edison. I used to work in a hardware store, but always thought edison was just a word meaning screw. I wasnt even thinking about lightbulbs when i realised, something in my brain just finally put the connection together pun intended

Mochudubh · 17/03/2021 11:03

@MindGrapes

The rule has not been adhered to! The rule is, whenever one of these threads appears, someone posts about the petrol pump symbol on your car dashboard indicating which side you fill up your petrol tank on (with an arrow or hose).

But then someone else says 'but not in all cases - mine doesn't'.

There. I felt this thread wasn't quite right without it....

It was only when I met now DH that he showed me that the petrol pump hose stretches and unless you're driving a truck you can fill up even if the cap is on the opposite side to the pump. (Assuming you park close enough to the pump).

This has probably saved me a few hours of queuing for fuel over the years.

Everythingiswonderful · 17/03/2021 12:13

@Pyewackect no it doesn’t, there was a thread recently about a microwave manual saying to put a metal spoon in a cup when heating the contents -not in all microwaves obviously.

My middle finger doesn't touch my palm when I snap my fingers. Confused

Bit of a light bulb moment for you Grin

@suggestionsplease1

I spent some time during university staring at the back of my shower gel which said '41 uses with puff' and puzzling that I could only think of 1 potential use for it with a puff.

Also many years thinking the song was 'Nellie the elephant back to front and said goodbye to the circus'

I could only think of 1 potential use for it with a puff.

GrinGrinGrin This REALLLLLY made me laugh!!!

Cardboardeaux · 17/03/2021 13:06

This always appears on these threads, but I don't understand what people thought the sound was if not your middle finger hitting your palm? Confused

justasking111 · 17/03/2021 13:23

When DS and girlfriend went abroad leaving his car here, I thought I would clean it inside and outside as a treat, found a cardboard container empty which said butt plug, I googled oh wow, still not sure what it does but knew not to ask Shock

GenderApostate19 · 17/03/2021 13:36

To whoever was sad about the Elgin marbles not being in the Parthenon - if they had been left there , they would have been destroyed as the Ottomans were using it as an arsenal.
Lord Elgin saved them.

I admit I'm clearly doing it wrong because I can't make a sound. The closest I can get to a sound is the sound of my thumb against my finger bone. My finger doesn't hit my palm, it hits the thumb chop

I'm glad someone else said this. Mine doesn't either.
