I nearly bought an item entitled Shabby Sheikh but decided against - I had nowhere to put him and it might just have caused problrms.

Chooka enba= Prints Phillip???? Confused

2018SoFarSoGreat · 15/03/2021 18:08

oh my god. It is quite terrifying that we have lost so much in the ability to determine what a word is, and how to spell it. I mean, you can ask Siri or Google to spell it if you can say it. IF. I guess that's the problem.

(anyone else now singing to their microwave - 'rows the boat ashore')

joystir59 · 15/03/2021 18:09

Ohhhhh. Duke of Edinburgh!!! Good grief!!!!

joystir59 · 15/03/2021 18:09

Portfolios that taste good!!!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 15/03/2021 18:12

If Shezlon & Michael Wave got married what would they call their offspring?

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2021 18:12

Someone in my local Facebook group was complaining about the neighbours in her 'Colder Sack'.

Took me a while to work out she meant cul-de-sac 😂😂

YouokHun · 15/03/2021 18:12

I once heard someone order a bottle of Voovay Clickwot which did make me smile!... but to be fair it's a bit of a tough one if you haven't heard it before

Also Mow-it and Chandon but that’s quite a common mispronunciation in the U.K.

I think Voovay Clickwot is brilliant and I’m going to stick with that from now on (not that there’s much Voovay Clickwot in my life).

I am usually aware enough of my shortcomings to check spellings but guilty of mispronouncing words words for years until I suddenly say it in front of someone and get laughed at. My most recent was talking about a tulle skirt and pronouncing it to rhyme with “dull”, I had never really thought about how it was supposed to be pronounced and my DM is still laughing at me weeks later Blush

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 15/03/2021 18:13

I would never have guessed the chooka enba one Shock

HauntedDishcloth · 15/03/2021 18:13

@Ralphiemia

A friend of mine asked the lady in the antique shop “how much is the mange tout”, she didn’t bat an eyelid told her the price and my friend was very happy with her new chaise longe.
Hehe! Reminds me of someone saying mange tout as "man get out"...

Moët is pronounced with a hard "t". Common misconception that it isn't.

Duke of Edinburgh.

For a wonderful lexicon from Down Under, thumb through a copy of "Let Stalk Strine" by the well-known pseudonym Afferbeck Lauder (which I confess I didn't manage to interpret correctly for ages). Here you'll discover that an "egg nishner" is an Australian device for cooling the room during a heatwave, "egg jelly" is a colloquialism meaning "in reality", and "airman" is the meat component of an airman pickle sandwich. Unfortunately I lost my copy years ago, but I see it's still available on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Let-stalk-Strine-lexicon-modern/dp/0725400811?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Seen on FB today, a friend's mother calling mange tout 'Man Get Out', which is kind of genius.

ichundich · 15/03/2021 18:19

My husband calls ours the "chez lounge", probably because it's in the lounge, although why "chez" I have no clue 🤦‍♀️. I think mispronounciations are a part of a language evolving though. For instance "cod" (type of fish) is "bacalao" in Spanish, while it's "Kabeljau" in German, i.e. (some) people used to switch over the middle consonants and it stuck.
