I know there will be a lot of you out there holding Nanzanin in your thoughts today as she is due back in court. Let’s all hope (and pray, if that’s your thing) for the right outcome.

This is shocking. Why has the embassy refused to attend? Utterly spineless!

I hope and pray she is released from this unending nightmare.

EastMonkey · 14/03/2021 10:32

The Embassy can't be involved with court cases in a country where a dual citizen holds that countries nationality.

I am not sure why that is even news, it's always been the case I think.

thirdfiddle · 14/03/2021 10:37

I don't know about these things, but would the embassy attending be at risk of lending credence to the proceedings?

EastMonkey · 14/03/2021 10:38

"Travelling abroad
As a dual national you cannot get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship.

For example, if you hold both British and Chinese citizenship you cannot get diplomatic help from the UK when you’re in China."

From the Gov UK website.

thirdfiddle · 14/03/2021 10:39

Ah sorry I expect EastMonkey is right.

SimonJT · 14/03/2021 10:43

As she is an Iranian citizen the British embassy aren’t allowed to attend, just as the Iranian embassy wouldn’t be allowed to send a representative if she was in court in the UK.

This new move is particularly cruel.

mammmamia · 14/03/2021 10:53

The whole thing is awful but the problem is her dual citizenship which prevents the UK from attending and restricts the amount of diplomatic support she can get.

thirdfiddle · 14/03/2021 10:54

I take it Iranian citizenship isn't something you can just relinquish?

MassDebate · 14/03/2021 10:56

Those who are quoting her dual citizenship may have forgotten that Nazanin supposedly has diplomatic protection from the UK. If that doesn’t permit the embassy to help her what does? It seems to have done nothing for her so far Angry

EastMonkey · 14/03/2021 10:58

Well, no, not when you are in Iran, having entered on an Iranian passport - that would make her stay illegal, and make things worse.

Her diplomatic protection is not recognised by Iran, it never has been - it was just a PR stunt (will be helpful when she actually gets out, but other than that it is completely pointless).

SimonJT · 14/03/2021 11:38

You can relinquish citizenship, I have done it (not Iranian), but you can’t enter that country on that countries passport and then relinquish it as your presence in that country would then become illegal depending on the other citizenship you hold. Its something you need to do when outside of that country, but no one should have to do it to be safe. Then again a foreign minister shouldn’t lie about the reason someone has visited a country.
thirdfiddle · 14/03/2021 11:57

Thanks for explaining. I really hope there are diplomats in the background doing what they can do.

DGRossetti · 14/03/2021 12:00

Sadly, I think she has become a pawn in a much bigger game of geopolitics, as Iran is keen to exert as much pressure as possible on the US in the ongoing negotiations and attempts to restart it's nuclear deal.

bluebluezoo · 14/03/2021 12:02

This. In addition Iran doesn’t recognise dual citizenship so to them she is an Iranian, subject to their law, and the British government have as much right to interfere as any other- you might as well be asking why the US or australian govt aren’t there.

How does she have diplomatic protection from the uk? Iran doesn’t recognise her british citizenship.

mildlymiffed · 22/03/2021 15:28

Has anyone seen any updates on what the outcome of the trial was? Sorry if I've missed something. I thought a verdict was going to be delivered in the week- but I haven't seen anything on mainstream media...

user1471462634 · 22/03/2021 15:48

I was thinking the exact same thing. Expected some news yesterday.

mildlymiffed · 26/04/2021 13:56

I've just seen on the bbc that Nazanin has been sentenced to a further year's imprisonment.

Devastated for her, and her family. Wondering what the governments "redoubling of efforts" is going to entail.

Flyonawalk · 26/04/2021 14:10

Terrible news - that poor woman and her family. Keeping them all in our prayers.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 26/04/2021 14:29

Awful news, poor Nazanin.

Chatanooga1 · 26/04/2021 14:34

I do t know much about her and have just asked on another thread why everyone is saying she is innocent?

Her second sentence was for participating in a protest in front of the Iranian Embassy in London in 2009.

Unless she wasn’t there then as horrendous as it is to be locked up for speaking out against the regime that is their law and she must have known that as she is Iranian.

They live in a backwards world and have no tolerance so it appears she has angered then by speaking out against them and as soon as she has gone back to Iran they have banned her.

Absolutely awful but we all know that’s what they do.

Horehound · 26/04/2021 14:37

I've been waiting for news about Nazanin. I'm my, what a shame.

Does anyone know, if, after this year, she can be tried again for another thing they've plucked out of thin air?
Will her time at her parents house under house arrest contribute to her sentence?

Viviennemary · 26/04/2021 18:00

It is bad news. But is there more to this than meets the eye.

Kljnmw3459 · 26/04/2021 18:04

I think they're unlikely to let her go at any point because they're hoping she can be used as a bargaining tool. I hope I'm wrong but next year no doubt there will be new made up charges against her.

newnortherner111 · 26/04/2021 18:56

Awful news.
