I know there will be a lot of you out there holding Nanzanin in your thoughts today as she is due back in court. Let’s all hope (and pray, if that’s your thing) for the right outcome.

The poor woman and her family. Her little daughter though she’d be home, she must be heartbroken.

How has she got Diplomatic protection if shes just an ordinary person. And why was she bobbing backwards and forwards from Iran to the UK all the time. I dont buy it.

MrsRockAndRoll · 26/04/2021 20:50

Heartbreaking

DenisetheMenace · 26/04/2021 20:55

Can only imagine what she and the family are going through right now.

She will not be released until the UK Govt. pay the Iranian Govt. what is owed. She is a political prisoner.

In light of the billions thrown away in the past year (track and trace?) would that really be so difficult? It’s the only moral solution.

I've never understood why the British government haven't paid. It seems to be a straightforward and uncontested debt. I presume I'm missing something though.

I'm so sad for Nazaneen and her family.

I don’t know all the ins and outs, but she got diplomatic status in 2019 as part of an attempt to get her released and I presume she was going back and forth to visit her family? As a dual citizen she was entitled to travel and maybe she wanted her daughter to know her Iranian family.
roses2 · 26/04/2021 21:20

They can't pay because its a sanctioned country and under UN laws payments to sanctioned countries can't be legally made.

So sad to hear about the news today. Its a case I've been following for awhile.

Thank you. I didn't know that. Horrifically unfair for her to be treated like a pawn.
Viviennemary · 27/04/2021 20:46

I didn't know about the unpaid debt to Iran when I wrote my post. But holding Nazanin prisoner is not going to help. Its very strange.

It’s inexplicable. I don’t believe you’re missing anything at all, Even more inexplicable is the lack of public outcry. She and her family have been put through hell on earth over a debt that, were it downsized to a domestic situation and taken to the small claims court, the party breaching the contract (UK Govt.) would have been ordered to make restitution.

How that family have held themselves together - more than that, stayed solid and strong - for so many years is beyond my comprehension.

I suppose the small number of posts over the past few days days something. I fear many people just don’t care or, preferably, are not aware of the circumstances. I’ve no idea how the PM, Chancellor and Foreign Secretary sleep.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 30/04/2021 21:51

Or perhaps there isn't much more to add! It's an awful situation, don't know all the details but seems bloody shit. Holding a mother to ransom against a government that doesn't particularly care about its people is just being spiteful. I know it wasn't too long ago that we used to loudly proclaim that we don't negotiate with terrorism, but there seems to be a valid case for payment of the debt. I expect that that could be organised somehow if it was wanted enough, via third parties etc - I expect it already would have been if current arms deals, or arms dealers' pockets more to the point, were threatened.

DenisetheMenace · 30/04/2021 22:24

This case isn’t negotiating with terrorists. It’s repaying a lawful debt, plain and simple. Meanwhile, an innocent woman and her family continue to be traumatised. It could be resolved tomorrow.

eurochick · 30/04/2021 22:32

The issue, as I understand it, is that sanctions prevent the payment of the tank money. There is some explanation here:
