I'm not sure why, find it calming..are there any things you like to do which seem a bit boring but you strangely enjoy? Or is it just me...

elQuintoConyo Yes, London maps are fascinating. I did live there, and have old family connections so got some reproduced old maps for areas that my ancestors lived in, but even if I had no connection it would still be fascinating. Some great street names, like Poultry and Little Britain (though I'm sure loads of old places have great street names!) and I love seeing the evidence of the old city walls in the 'gate' street names.

Can I introduce you to maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=5&lat=56.00000&lon=-4.00000&layers=1&right=ESRIWorld

You're welcome

I love maps too...
I love to do origami with them, I have whole set of Dominanta stars I made, from about 12 inches across right down to a large thumbnail sized one

Also gathered up enough OS maps to cover a wall, and I put photos of places we have been on them.

I also like an old style atlas with lots of odd little temperature maps, population ,maps, rainfall....you know the sort of thing

I even have a World map oilcloth on the kitchen table and i really wanted a World Map shower curtain, but i went for one that matched the tiles instead.

Yep, love maps. I like to look at old maps of places I've lived and reminisce about places I've walked with friends, journeys in cars, where I've been camping. It's like reading a diary, I probably prefer it to reading a book!

kennelmaid · 12/02/2021 17:59

Another map lover here! It might sound a bit geeky but I had a map specially printed by the OS of the area me and my DSis used to meet up to walk our dogs. You can choose the exact area you want and the scale and you can give the map your own title. I had it done after she died and have it up on my wall.

MaidofKent78 · 12/02/2021 18:00

We're a family of map geeks too. My husband and I got bought an OS map of the area we were moving to as a present with the tag that this is for SHARING from my best friend. She knows us too well :-)

A good map is as much a thing of beauty as it is a piece of precision.

My husband is a geography lecturer who delivers a module on Mapping and is known as the GIS expert within his department. I'm an analyst who is, amongst other things, developing the spatial analysis we do. Maps are very much the lifeblood of our daily lives :-)

Sacreblue · 12/02/2021 18:02

I like maps too, and luckily it coincides with a good memory Grin

I would like a globe though so I could play spin the world

soundofsilence1 · 12/02/2021 18:03

I collect antique maps and frame them instead of pictures. Some are really decorative as well as being interesting. The John Speed county maps are particularly attractive.

oohmyback · 12/02/2021 18:05

I'm a map lover too. I collect vintage maps and maps of interest and hang them on my walls!

Phyllis321 · 12/02/2021 18:05

I LOVE maps! Check out Map Men on YouTube.

I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE!! Smile

I have an ancient A-Z of London which my dad gave to me just for looking at because he knew I'd like it.

I got him a jigsaw puzzle map of where he grew up, made by Butler & Hill. If you give them a postcode or grid reference they make a jigsaw of an A-Z or ordnance survey of that area. It comes in a box with the postcode but no picture of the completed puzzle. Dad had a lovely time working it out & putting it all together with the aid of his own map collections!

TheOrchidKiller · 12/02/2021 18:13

Thanks for all the suggestions- that's hours of entertainment sorted!

Eckhart · 12/02/2021 18:17
Oh no. Don't you realise I had other stuff to do for the next 40 years?! YOU'VE RUINED MY LIFE!
Ginfordinner · 12/02/2021 18:21

I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE AS WELL Smile

In spite of having satnavs and using google map on my phone I still like a real paper map. We keep a road atlas in the car, and we have a huge OS map of the area in which we live, as we both like walking.

I like to see the bigger picture of where everything is in relation to everywhere else to get a sense of proportion - something you can't get on a small phone screen. Also, whenever I read a book I like to see where the book is set to get a sense of place.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/02/2021 18:23

Another map lover checking in...

My offering is these (historic street maps for several UK cities/towns) which I've found very useful for my family history research:
www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html

(Also bought several from Alan Godfrey Maps.)

Will lose the weekend looking up the other links on here, thanks 😂

MySaladDays75 · 12/02/2021 18:24

I love maps! My dad was a land surveyor so I think it’s genetic! 😂
Also don’t trust sat navs - gimme a road atlas anyday!

mogtheexcellent · 12/02/2021 18:24

National library of Scotland has many many OS maps of UK online. You can layer on modern maps. I use old maps for my work so its a good job I love them.

Also old building plans are fascinating, there's a load on the RIBA website.

woodhill · 12/02/2021 18:25

Absolutely love looking at maps

If we are going on a long journey to somewhere we haven't been before I always check the satnav directions against a real map Grin

I have never been able to understand people who go on holiday and don't know where they are going - just Majorca, just Tenerife. But where in Majorca or Tenerife? How can they be so uninterested?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/02/2021 18:27

I love, love, love maps too Grin

Agree with previous posters about the joy of the NLS maps.

VienneseWhirligig · 12/02/2021 18:27

And me! I started my interest when a business associate of my dad's gave me an atlas when I was about 8, and my parents bought me a globe. I've always wanted a beautiful antique globe but haven't got anywhere to put it yet. When I get my antique roll top bureau, that's the place for it!

FlatterNow · 12/02/2021 18:31

@TonTonMacoute - that sounds amazing! Can you get a paper copy?

FlatterNow · 12/02/2021 18:32

And also, fellow map lovers, can I mention nautical charts? As soon as inessential shops open again I'm off to the picture framers to get one framed.
