I'm not sure why, find it calming..are there any things you like to do which seem a bit boring but you strangely enjoy? Or is it just me...

I also like to find things on streetview. So, if I'm watching a street scene on a tv programme, and I don't know where it's set, I pause it, try to find an unusual street name or shop name, and then try to find it on Googlemaps. Once I've matched it up, I'm satisfied. It's totally pointless.

Map tests.

Happy lockdown!

One word, Stanfords. Quite possibly the most exciting shop in London.

Is it still there? I used to work in Foyle on the Charing Cross Road, and go to Stanford's at lunchtimes. 20 years ago, now!

I’ve always loved looking at maps. I have a detailed map of London on my wall and I bought an A1 colour-in map of the world that Ive had framed.

Love maps!

And google earth too.

I love dropping down and trying to guess where I am Grin

TonTonMacoute · 12/02/2021 18:45

@FlatterNow

Oh yes! You can find a selection of national and local options here

I first saw it when I was studying about 15 years ago and I can't remember if these were the ones but they look pretty enticing!

I do this for books I am reading, it is sometimes quite fascinating.

TheOrchidKiller · 12/02/2021 18:48

Got to admit that I don't own a satnav but think I am better at getting around the local area than colleagues who rely on it and don't read maps.

They think I'm old fashioned, but I know all the back roads & short cuts, & where places are in relation to everywhere else. Knew that O level in geography would come in handy!

The only problem now is that a standard A-Z is too small for me to see properly because I'm getting older & need my reading glasses all the time

Time travel maps! "Detailed Old Victorian Ordnance Survey 6 inch to 1 mile Old Map (1888-1913) , Havant, Hampshire Co-ordinates 50.849171, -0.992820" www.archiuk.com/cgi-bin/build_nls_historic_map.pl?search_location=,%20Havant,%20Hampshire&latitude=50.849171&longitude=-0.992820&[email protected]

I love maps - always have. I used to read the map section of the AA handbook on car journeys as a child. Reading a book in a moving car would make me feel travel sick, but reading a map never did.

Knittingnanny · 12/02/2021 19:11

Me too I love maps and atlases . I often have a browse through my 1965 school prize atlas ( for being 3 rd in the class out of 44 when I was 9!) and like looking at the old names and boundaries.

YouAintKingDingALing · 12/02/2021 19:14

@Eckhart it still exists but they moved to a different location a couple of yrs ago - across the road ish. Its just not the same anymore though. The building is smaller and v new.

weegiemum · 12/02/2021 19:15

I love them too. Ex geography teacher, so kind of important I like them! DJ bought me the Times Atlas of the World when we got married. I used to go into bookshops just to look at it before I got it.

Don't have a satnav, though I have used the map function on the iPhone when we've been hopelessly lost!

FlatterNow · 12/02/2021 19:28

Thank you @TonTonMacoute!

Love maps, thanks for this brilliant thread.

Had a wall covered top to bottom in OS maps, also enjoy scouring old bookshops for vintage 1950’s driving maps.

Ordnance Survey were repurposing maps at one time and had lots of useful map merchandise, very exciting; clipboards, notebooks, table mats...

Anyone else addicted to the shop One Hundred Stars - lovely scarves and garments made with map themes...

Didn’t realise I had (ahem) acquired a number of RAF Flying OS maps, when I later thought I would drive following some very direct routes - I found my error - the purple lines were actually marking low electric pylons - for aircraft to avoid.

Enjoyed a spell working at a military base where they dealt with all the mapping - oh the joy, especially when someone found a very rare unopened box from WW2 - containing silk scarves with maps printed on them, for the pilots to navigate with, in the event that they were shot down.

Just lost a great friend last summer, he took pride in having every single OS map of the UK. I hope the person clearing his effects appreciated what they were discarding...

oneglassandpuzzled · 12/02/2021 20:10

Love old Ordnance survey maps in particular. Seeing which places have always been connected and working out why. Seeing how settlements have changed over decades.

ListeningQuietly · 12/02/2021 20:18

You have to have the
1:63300 and the
1:50000 and the
1:25000
of the same place
to be an addict
and multiple editions of each
Wink

Can I also suggest the Map Corner podcast to listen to people talking about maps.

MaidofKent78 · 12/02/2021 20:22

For antique maps, this shop is amazing:
