How naff are private plates?

I know... I'm a bit sad, but I have seen a set of car plates that are perfect for my name..and I want them. But I don't drive a porche or anything posh..just my dear little Panda 4x4....

OP posts:

I would be happy to have proper personalised plate like RT 56 or TWE 2, however i do think the cheapo or badly spelled out names are naff for eg A113N or S1 ABC.
@Aaaaaah well no. Shoes you wear, books you read and bags you carry things in. Looking at a picture of a shoe won’t keep your foot warm. A personalised number plate has zero purpose.
If it is a cherished number ie GT 2 then it is an asset, no difference from buying watches, houses or other investments.

I'm surprised that some actually think that those who dislike private plates can't afford them! You can pick many up for a couple of hundred pounds can't you, they're hardly the realms of the super rich.

Wft, i think people are talking about cherished numbers, eg FD 12 or PAM 2, these are £00000’s not £000’s.
peak2021 · 11/02/2021 16:23

OP yes I agree you are sad.

R488 1T5 is the best I’ve seen

Um ... I'm being dim. What does that read as?

I've got accidental private plates that belonged to the car's previous owner. I looked into changing them, but it was too much faff. Every so often, I wonder if someone is thinking that I'm a show-off nitwit.

I don’t understand the ‘hiding the age’ thing either. The only person who cares about the age of your car is someone who might buy it off you one day, and you’d have to divulge the age to them, so...?

Bangable · 11/02/2021 17:20

I love my private plate on my Disco, it makes me happy and that's all that matters.

LeopardsCANTChangeTheirSpots · 11/02/2021 17:42

Tat attack! So tacky!

I have private plates - the ones that came with the car, no one else has them!

SwedishK · 11/02/2021 17:46

@Kinneddar

If you don’t like having money then give your money to someone who can do something useful with them, don’t spend hundreds on a piece of plastic tat

You could apply that to lots of things. Its no different to buying something like a designer bag

Yea, I don’t get that either. Unless it’s something like a really well made suitcase which needs to survive being manhandled then I think mid-range is just as good quality wise as an ultra expensive bag.

It’s not just personalised number plates I think are bonkers, there’s lots of other things too.

SwedishK · 11/02/2021 17:48

I would judge them if they spent let’s say £800 on a belt for a dress which looks pretty much identical to the belt that came with it. I mean, that would be an insane waste of money.

I just don’t understand it at all. Even if I were a multi millionaire I wouldn’t spend money on private plates - I don’t get it. What’s the point?

I mean, I don’t think badly of people who do it, but I don’t understand why you would.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 11/02/2021 18:32

They are worth getting just to wind up people with such strong reaction Grin

A very expensive car is "show off" anyway, plates make no difference

Some people have them to show off, others because they like it, who cares.

On a more "vintage" banger, i think they are funny.

Don't forget this is MN! You mustn't spend more than £40 on your wedding, you mustn't buy more than 3 gifts from a charity shop for your kids Christmas, you mustn't spend more than £25 a week for 6 on groceries...

Sometimes tacky is fun.

Laiste · 11/02/2021 18:47

I misread this as private planes.

Yeah, they're SO naff. Flying about in your own plane indeed! Naff naff naff Grin

Tara336 · 11/02/2021 18:53

Crikey people make a lot of judgements over a number plate! I have one it was a gift, I’m very very fond of it and will keep using it, also makes life easier as I’m crap at remembering things these days.

Paquerette · 11/02/2021 18:54

@LittleOverwhelmed

Could never remember my plate until I got a private one (it isn’t a naff one)
Same here.

Our local car parks require a number plate to pay for parking, and it's so much easier to remember.

I don't understand why people are so offended by personal plates.I can think of loads of really tacky things like hair extensions, orange foundation, fake tan, false fingernails but they don't bother me, and I wouldn't bother starting a thread about them.

LowlandLucky · 11/02/2021 19:02

Here in S.W Scotland it is the norm to have private plates

Limer · 11/02/2021 19:09

Or maybe

Y4BVU

Blancsav · 11/02/2021 19:21

When I got my dream car my kids bought me plates with my initials. I LOVE them.

Honestly, MN is such a dark cloud sometimes with posters determined to bring others down. If spending money on something you want is considered naff.... Then the economy is fucked

efc1878 · 11/02/2021 19:24

I have my dogs name on my private plates!

Ijustlikedthename · 11/02/2021 19:31

Not my cup of tea other than the one I see driving round occasionally that reads UFO2LET that cracks me up every time!

Changi · 11/02/2021 19:44

Not my cup of tea other than the one I see driving round occasionally that reads UFO2LET that cracks me up every time!

I wouldn't even look twice at that. It just looks like an ordinary random number to me.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/02/2021 19:53

@efc1878
I think the easiest way to achieve this is to call your dog CPA 690 S or whatever you registration is.
