How naff are private plates?

I know... I'm a bit sad, but I have seen a set of car plates that are perfect for my name..and I want them. But I don't drive a porche or anything posh..just my dear little Panda 4x4....

I always thought they were naff, then I moved to another country. They are quite popular here and I've gotten used to them. I think nothing of it now. Sometimes people have funny ones - I particularly like those Grin

WineInTheWillows · 11/02/2021 05:49

@DownstairsMixUp

I just think "wanker" in my head when I pass one.
You must be thinking it a lot. They're so popular around here.

Go for it, OP.

ClinkyMonkey · 11/02/2021 06:05

I must admit, I do roll my eyes a bit when I see one, but that lasts a nano second and the owner doesn't know - unless of course they are specifically watching for people's reactions. But I wouldn't like to comment on that ....

ElleDubloo · 11/02/2021 06:14

I don’t have one, but I’ve seen some good ones around and I think they can be done well. I’d probably get one if I could think of a really clever idea. Wouldn’t get one with my name just for the sake of it.

SimonJT · 11/02/2021 06:22

I have one on my car and motorbike, I’m Asian so it’s basically compulsory, they’re Hondas too.

Where I used to work lots of people had personal plates as cars were only allowed to be a maximum of four years old if you were using them to visit clients. So a personal plate was used to disguise the age of a car.

tara66 · 11/02/2021 06:23

Naff and to be scorned. I always think ''oh no'' when I see them in great pity.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/02/2021 06:24

The only people who think they’re naff are people who can’t afford them.

I can wholeheartedly tell you that this isnt true. However, if telling yourself that the reason people think your personal taste is naff is because they're paupers, then go ahead. Whatever makes you feel better.

Fluffytheevil1 · 11/02/2021 06:40

My ndn have got matching plates recently. It was their Christmas present to each Other. We know this, as they stood in the street loudly announcing it Hmm
Wouldn’t care but it doesn’t actually say what they think it does. 😩😂

whiteroseredrose · 11/02/2021 07:08

I just assume that it's for someone with a bad memory so they need a number plate that's easy to remember for them.

snowydaysandholidays · 11/02/2021 07:16

They are naff on sports cars, but on a panda I think it would look very quirky and individual, so a definite yes from me.

Bananarama101 · 11/02/2021 07:56

I find some okay, some less so... If you've messed around with the spacing and had to use the screw heads or something to try and make it resemble a word, then just no. Even worse if used the wrong font, have a shortened plate, or that crappy '4D' raised font. All mostly technically illegal anyway. They can be useful though, as if you see someone driving round with something that is supposed to say 'Boss' or something in 4D letters, then almost invariably they'll drive like an absolute throbber, so give them a wide berth.

StillMedusa · 11/02/2021 08:01

I can't believe I woke up to four pages on my question Grin
I actually do think they are a bit naff..but they make me smile when I spot a funny one or see one I know is a friend's
The one I fancy would make it very clear it's my car and it's not expensive..I'm not daft enough to spend loads.
I shall let the idea simmer :)

I have some although not that obvious

Paid £195 for them 20 years ago- been on 3 cars. Similar now sell for at least £500. so fun and a bit on an investment.

Five67Eight · 11/02/2021 09:58

Funny! Especially given they’re definitely more associated with ...

... Hondas, rather than Porsches. But you tell yourself people are ‘jealous’. Wink

Onesmallstepforaman · 11/02/2021 10:08

Get FU 2 😊

Newfor2021 · 11/02/2021 10:11

My parents bought me private plates for my 21st birthday...... there have been many times over the years the plates are worth waaaay more than the car they’re on! I used to find it funny Wink

Don’t be slagging off Hondas!

I have a Civic Type R GT and a Fireblade SP.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 11/02/2021 10:16

Not this again.. we have them ,it's fun and I love them ! Not for everyone but I don't care !

Shmithecat2 · 11/02/2021 10:18

Naff. And pointless unless your initials plus the letter 1 are available ie ABC1. And they cost a bloody fortune.

darklady64 · 11/02/2021 10:18

Another vote for the "naff" category, I'm afraid, and I'd far rather spend the money on something else, BUT if it makes you happy, then who cares what I think. Everyone needs a bit of cheering up at the moment, so if this is what it takes for you, and it will make you smile every time you see them, why not.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/02/2021 10:32

I've been looking at them recently as I have money saved from doing bugger all for the last year and want a splurge! However the ones I'd like are really quite expensive so not sure I can really justify it...

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 11/02/2021 10:33

@MrsJBaptiste if you go on the deal website you can make up your own ( if it's available ) that's what I did years ago .

MrsJBaptiste · 11/02/2021 10:34

See, I think ABC1 is pointless.

I'd want Anna BC1 (for example) so it's obvious what my name is, not just my initials ABC.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/02/2021 10:35

@huuuuunnnndderrricks I'll have a look but not sure if I'll then be splurging too much! Grin

I do like the fact it's not obvious what age your car is though. Luckily I have a car which although not very new, the shape of it hasn't changed in a few years.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 11/02/2021 10:41

I think they're hideously tacky. I just think it's someone going through a mid life crisis.
If you don't care what anyone else thinks then all that matters is what you think.
