I've been messing with everyone by text

By not putting an X at the end of messages. Sometimes I go the full hog and put a full stop.

So far my dad wants to know if he's upset me and my teen came down to ask if he's in trouble. 😂

I usually chat online to mainly Americans and it's not the done thing with them so thought I'd drop it completely as it's a bit daft. British people are not ready for this. Grin

I have Indian friends who after many, many messages asked me why I keep putting X at the end of messages. They were utterly baffled. I've stopped now. X

TheSockMonster · 02/02/2021 18:36

This reminds me of my x dilemma. At the start of the pandemic I started ending messages to some friends with xx, because 1 x is clearly just punctuation and unprecedented times required unprecedented use of the x key.

Problem is it’s stuck at xx now. I want to go back to x, but I don’t want them wondering what they’ve done wrong...

Love Sock xx

Sparklfairy · 02/02/2021 18:36

I was freed from this insanity by my abusive ex. He was a "xxxxxxxxx" texter. Before meeting him I was a "x" or "xx".

He would get angry and say I was being 'blunt' if I didn't send the EXACT same number of X's back. Yes he would count them.

Who the fuck dictates how many kisses I put in a text? He would just press X a random number of times, then count how many I sent back to check it matched. Absolute nutjob.

I dumped him for other reasons but now I don't send kisses AT ALL and it's liberating.

Best you'll get is an emoji from me. And I only put a full stop at the end if I'm being arsey Grin

smoothchange · 02/02/2021 18:36

I have never used an x to end a sentence

Exhausteddog · 02/02/2021 18:39

I don't even know what I do! I'm going to look back and analyse my texts! I mainly use whatsapp and I would put an x on a message to DH, Dsis and a (female) friend...I'm not sure what I do with anyone else!

Stiles · 02/02/2021 18:39

It's FB that made me think about all this. As the difference between mainly UK and mainly US users is noticeable. Like Showy says there xxx's are peppered everywhere in UK groups.
So many of have been conditioned to add them to show we're typing in a friendly way. Even when typing, "That's so good, well done," where it’s obvious a nice sentence we have to add the X just in case someone reads it as sarcastic. 😂

I realise I have also maybe totally missed people being cross with me, just thought they were lazy about punctuation. But I do feel better about random people I hardly know or am in a business sort of relationship with x ing me which I thought was weird and creepy. Smile

Eckhart · 02/02/2021 18:40

I love it. Drop exclamation marks too. Deadpan rocks!!!! xxxx

Sorry.

Deadpan rocks.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/02/2021 18:42

I always accidentally use zz which is fitting

HaveringWavering · 02/02/2021 18:42

All my texts and WhatsApp messages and in full stops. Nobody has ever complained but I generally don’t communicate with anyone under 35.
I only end with a kiss if it is to my husband (son is too young) and even then not every text. He gets three or none. I think that using them in other contexts is really cringey. I do use emojis though, am not a total dinosaur!

HaveringWavering · 02/02/2021 18:44

My (male) cleaner called me “Hun” in a text the other day. He’s known me 3 weeks. That was interesting.

garlictwist · 02/02/2021 18:44

This whole thread has brought back painful memories of his rather embarrassing "experiment" I conducted when I was at university years ago.

I decided not to text anyone and then wait to see who texted me. They got points for texting within a certain time frames, with additional points for how friendly their message was. And yes, this was measured by the number of xxxx.

Fizzgigg · 02/02/2021 18:46

This is eye opening. I reserve x for close friends and family and never ever colleagues.

I am now immediately putting full stops at the end of all messages from now on (it's probably 50/50 anyway). I had no idea they bothered people!

Gliblet · 02/02/2021 18:47

@BeMyCherryBest

Putting an x at the end of a message is cringe, childish and reminds me of those FB posts where someone is writing something really offensive but states they aren't being so and adds so xxx at the end, urgg.

Maybe I've just seen a certain type do it so that's why I'm put off.

x - the text equivalent of the twinkly laugh Grin

I sometimes use emoji in work related texts but never kisses/x's. If I ever did it would be by accident (like the time I told a member of our IT team 'Love you, bye' before hanging up on a phone call Blush ).

2toe · 02/02/2021 18:49

I’ve only ever put kisses at the end of messages when I’m trying to mess with people 😁

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 02/02/2021 18:50

I don’t even x DP sometimes it just depends what / how I’m writing. I use speech to text a lot while crafting so it’s easier not to say “x” at the end for the sake of it. He doesn’t give a shit he knows I love the daft bastard Grin

Friends luckily aren’t xxx people either. Sometimes they get an x, but if there is a group chat or flowing convo there’s no need I feel. I’m lucky / glad I have friends that aren’t arsed with this kind of thing.

I think I use full stops as they’re normal punctuation.

MacDuffsMuff · 02/02/2021 18:50

Wait ... we've not to use full stops now? Absolutely fucking not. I will not surrender my punctuation!

Oh and

x

KatharinaRosalie · 02/02/2021 18:51

And what's with the multiple exclamation or question marks? I've been getting more and more of them, and for random statements where they clearly don't belong. Is it some kind of young people thing? Because for me,
Where are you? - normal question.
Where are you??? - where the HELL are you, you twat, you're supposed to be here ages ago!

HavelockVetinari · 02/02/2021 18:52

I don't put kisses, but with a very few exceptions I hate being touched by almost everybody - a random hug makes me involuntarily cringe and stiffen up, a pat makes me flinch. So if I come across as unfriendly/not huggy that's excellent for me!

OppsUpsSide · 02/02/2021 18:53

I finish texts with full stops all the time, had no idea it was arsey, no wonder people think I’m stand offish 😂

Defiant · 02/02/2021 18:57

I've never used xx at the end my texts, it makes me feel weird to do it

splashingabout · 02/02/2021 18:58

I used to work somewhere where they'd put "x"s in emails and felt pressure to do so so I didn't come across as a cow lol

visitorfromtheplanetzog · 02/02/2021 18:58

I send a lot of messages to people connected with my hobby, and since a lot of them are men, it would be rather awkward if I put an x at the end of the messages. I really really wouldn't want them (or their wives) to get the wrong impression.

The only people who get an x are DH, DD and SIL.

IthinkIm · 02/02/2021 18:59

K

ZaZathecat · 02/02/2021 19:00

Oh no! I use everything from full-stops to semi-colons on my messages. I know it makes me at dinosaur, but I had no idea how rude I was being 🤭
