I've been messing with everyone by text

By not putting an X at the end of messages. Sometimes I go the full hog and put a full stop.

So far my dad wants to know if he's upset me and my teen came down to ask if he's in trouble. 😂

I usually chat online to mainly Americans and it's not the done thing with them so thought I'd drop it completely as it's a bit daft. British people are not ready for this. Grin

Ignore P.
🙄
My autocorrect faints at fuck but appears to have a fetish of a distinctively scatological nature.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 02/02/2021 18:21

Ye gods. My teen children (growing up in a non english speaking country, in the local school system, don't really know many English speakers) text in full sentences with punctuation. Is this seriously an aspect of British culture they're unaware of? I don't know if I csn bring myself to tell them...

Doyoumind · 02/02/2021 18:23

But how do those who don't usually use x at the end have a passive aggressive way to show people when they are pissed off with them?

Witchend · 02/02/2021 18:26

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 02/02/2021 18:27

I begged my year twos to use full stops today!!!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 02/02/2021 18:28

last time this came up I searched my whatsapp chat with dh, there were two x, one xx and that was in almost 12 months !! I am not an x at the end of a text person.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 02/02/2021 18:28

Do blokes do this?

Stiles · 02/02/2021 18:28

You've all made me laugh. So many secret ways to communicate in a text just a few words long Grin

@Doyoumind, I'd probably stop using contractions. Grin

If you want to be deliberately vague and annoy people, end the text with a comma

They don’t know whether you’ve pressed send by accident,

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/02/2021 18:28

Kissy x's are nearly as irritating as the frequent misplaced and inappropriate 'lol' in the middle of an SMS

MissConductUS · 02/02/2021 18:28

I'm an American and I often use normal punctuation in a text, including a "." at the end of a sentence. It's never caused offense as far as I know. It just means that the sentence has ended.

Slowslowlavaflow · 02/02/2021 18:29

This is so funny. I actually almost never put an x at the end, rather a smiley face; unless it is my mum /sister and I am saying goodnight.

I've actually noticed that sellers/buyers who message me online on Shpock, Etsy, or Ebay for example, very often put an x or 2, at the end of each message. Really awkward, as I don't know them. It shows you how deep some Brits have fallen into this habit, when they even do it to strangers doing serious transactions with them.

MindGrapes · 02/02/2021 18:30

That's really good, OP. My friend ends every text with a full stop. I know it's just a difference in style but it brings to mind Eeyore. It's like that other thread where someone said "cheers." instead of "Thank you!!!" and the thread had hundreds of appalled posters spluttering at how rude it was.

depopsa · 02/02/2021 18:30

Oooh, this explains so much. In the UK I put xx behind messages to colleagues and vague acquaintances even if I find it over the top, unprofessional and would never air kiss that person in real life - because I've seen that pained rejection you describe if the xxxes are missing. Which is basically the reaction I imagine a Brit would have if I did what's normal where I'm from, i.e. actual cheek kissing Shock with people you don't know that well. At the same time, back home sending xxxes would feel horribly intrusive to anyone but lovers.

I could never square the need for xx with the recoil I knew would come my way if I'd actually try to air or cheek kiss this person. Now I get it's completely backwards to how I would code this: xx(xxxxx) equals normal friendliness, real life kisses is a huge disrespect of personal space.

Weirdfan · 02/02/2021 18:30

I struggle to not put kisses on here even though I know how severely it would be frowned upon so hats off to you OP! I'm currently conversing by text with my elderly NDN's son (NDN is needing some support) and it's physically paining me to end messages with full stops but kisses would be wildly inappropriate Blush

bloodywhitecat · 02/02/2021 18:31

I am an old fart, the only people who get x's at the end of messages are my kids because I hardly ever see them and DP. My old boss used to sign off with an x and it freaked me out!

midlifecrash · 02/02/2021 18:32

paragraph?

Thank you for your response.

X.

I use my words . :o

or this 3) .... waves to all the ex BMC-ers

it was supposed to be a sleepy emoticon, but just looked much more haughty and pissed off.

waynesbluestreak · 02/02/2021 18:33

A few years ago I decided to ditch x's on texts. It caused pandemonium for weeks with people asking how they had upset me or if I was ok mentally! I cringe when I receive them from colleagues or even worse my boss. A carefully selected and well placed emoji I may run to at times but that's it!

QOD · 02/02/2021 18:33

i ALWAYS put an X at the end to friends, my sister and all family members except my mum and husband. Which is weird, as they are my closest family members other than my daughter who gets random X or not

saffire · 02/02/2021 18:33

I only put kisses on messages to people I care about.

enjoyingscience · 02/02/2021 18:34

I’ve just had a look through my WhatsApp, and I use a lot of full stops. What if your message has more than one sentence? Surely you can’t just leave the second one hanging there, unfinished? So unsatisfactory.

I definitely am not a frequent xx user either. Am I dead inside?

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2021 18:34

I read a very long thing on a FB page recently and the vast majority of respondents said they liberally pepper their texts with xxx and leave them off if cross.

I never leave an x and feel weird if people sent them to me. Don't be so inappropriately intimate with me. Take your weird virtual kisses and proffer them to somebody else.

TroysMammy · 02/02/2021 18:35

I do a full stop then a capital X but sometimes it's just a lower case x. x

invisibleoldwoman · 02/02/2021 18:35

I had no idea about this. I am not very demonstrative so never put an x and was brought up to punctuate correctly so always put a full stop. No-one has commented.
