Anyone doing this?

Got all optimistic last night and booked a week in Italy in July. Am I a fool?

We went away last summer on a prebooked holiday, which was entirely allowed (destination, borders etc.) at the time. But it was so stressful, worrying about new testing regimes being imposed, flights were cancelled and changed, and despite very low rates of infection where we were, an outbreak in a city on the other side of the country meant that the travel corridor was removed while we were there. Luckily quarantine wasn't an issue as it was the school holiday and we can WFH, although not a fun way to end the summer. So this year I'm not planning anything at all. If there's a last minute possibility, great, but otherwise I don't want the hassle.

We rolled our 2020 Summer holiday to August 2021. It can cancel a week prior to arrival. No flights booked yet, we have to use the EasyJet voucher by end of June so should have a clearer picture then.

Otherwise I blocked the October half term, two weeks for us, in the hope we may be able to do something then.

As much as I like the UK we had two breaks last year and I would love more guaranteed sunshine then we most likely will have here in August.

crumpet · 22/01/2021 12:05

COVID tests will be needed in the way back too won’t they? At a possible cost of another £100-150?

crumpet · 22/01/2021 12:07

I’m budgeting c £300 per person for COVID test costs for future flights

Doidontimmm · 22/01/2021 12:11

We just cancelled our July holiday to Italy! No way things will be back to normal and tests for 4 will make it too expensive, not to mention potential isolating on return. Just not worth it.

GetTheDebtGoneIn2021 · 22/01/2021 12:54

I should have been vaccinated by then, so only Covid test for DD.

Greece booked for July. A UK 'break' isn't something that I personally would class as a holiday, so I'd rather take my chances with abroad and postpone if necessary.

soundofsilence1 · 22/01/2021 13:08

I think it will largely depend where you are travelling to and the speed of their vaccination programme e.g. Spain are saying no tourists until 70% of their population are vaccinated, expected to be late summer.

DazedandConcerned · 22/01/2021 13:14

Egypt booked for mid May and July. Hoping both go - will test before leaving the UK and Egypt offers return testing at the government lab for $30.

Can’t complain really.

Tier10 · 22/01/2021 14:55

I have a holiday booked for May, that we moved from last year snd I’m going to book a July holiday too. Hopefully I’ll get to go on one of them.

FrangipaniBlue · 22/01/2021 17:56

Florida, moved from October 2020 to end of October/November 2021.

DH thinks no chance we're going.

I'm hoping we may still get there but maybe with requirements for vaccine/negative test/quarantine on return.

DinosaurDiana · 22/01/2021 17:56

No, not this year.

FrangipaniBlue · 22/01/2021 17:59

I should add, we only have the Florida holiday scheduled due to it being moved.

I wouldn't have booked anything this year.

It's my 40th birthday coming up and we were planning other trips - but we aren't booking these now and waiting to see what happens!

jambeforeclottedcream · 22/01/2021 18:03

We have a holiday booked to go to France at the end of August. It was rolled over from last year. Same weeks, place etc

If it happens it happens if it doesn't it doesn't

Imissmoominmama · 22/01/2021 18:05

I have 3 UK walking breaks booked, in May, July and August. They are small group (6 people) trips, where we will stay in accommodation which is exclusively ours. I’m hoping they will be able to go ahead as outdoor exercise, but I’ll admit that the accommodation is a worry... unless we are all tested prior to going.

Nonamesavail · 22/01/2021 18:06

Cornwall booked for July.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/01/2021 18:10

We've got a camping trip in July that was rolled over from last year - fairly hopeful that it will go ahead. Also have a week in Corfu in May which we booked last summer knowing that we were taking a risk in losing our accommodation deposit if we can't go. The flights can be transferred to a later date so that's not such a problem. We were prepared to lose money so took the gamble and booked the accommodation anyway.

Biscoffaddict · 22/01/2021 18:12

No, we are in the middle of a pandemic and people shouldn’t be travelling unless absolutely necessary.

AuntieMarys · 22/01/2021 18:22

We have a week in Wales early July postponed from.last year...can't see it happening

Oldraver · 22/01/2021 18:23

Books a week in July for the Nee Forest, Covid permitting

bert3400 · 22/01/2021 18:23

I've booked NY for June ...Upper Class for the price of Economy. I couldn't not and I figured if it was cancelled we could rebook for another time . Also booked France in July & Scotland in August. I miss travelling 😪

bert3400 · 22/01/2021 18:32

@Soundofsilence1

The Spanish PM said he wants 70% of the country vaccinated before allowing tourists back into Spain, but it WASNT an official announcement. He was speaking at the World Travel Organisation meeting. But, the Spanish Minister for Tourism has said she expects tourists to be welcomed back into Spain by the end of Spring! Their priority is to have a successful Spanish summer season, whilst making sure residents and tourists are safe!

LimitIsUp · 22/01/2021 18:34

I've booked Jersey for August. Not ready to take the leap with proper overseas as yet

We've also got Centreparcs booked at the end of May - not everyone's cup of tea I know, but we are desperate for a change of scenery and they offer a no quibble refund or date change if covid restrictions prevent travel

LimitIsUp · 22/01/2021 18:36

Also, if anyone is procrastinating, UK hotels / self catering accommodation if booking fast (at least it was in Jersey and the Scilly Isles - both of which I looked at)

Pippapotomus · 22/01/2021 18:44

Our trip last Easter was cancelled and I changed the dates to this Easter. It was a weeks boat hire on the Norfolk Broads. I'm waiting for the boat people to ring and cancel. It'll be rubbish if all the pubs are shut and I've not bothered to book my herd of pets into their boarding places.

My August holiday to the Dordogne was also changed for this year. So far I've only paid the deposit and Eurotunnel gave me a voucher to rebook, valid for a year and the booking can be upto a year away. So there's nothing to lose thankfully.
