Anyone doing this?

Got all optimistic last night and booked a week in Italy in July. Am I a fool?

Just be aware that Jersey, while part of the Common Travel Area, has its own border testing regime. Currently anyone entering has to self isolate for ten days, and no commercial flights are operating, or any fast ferries. All hotels are closed other than for self isolators. It has been up and down since the start of last summer, with most of the peak season being fairly easy as infection rates were so low, but there's no guarantee you'll be able to holiday there this year.

Champagneforeveryone · 22/01/2021 19:56

I've just read a statement by an expert doctor in travel medicine who thinks that vaccination passports will be mandatory.

If that's the case it's going to be impossible for families to holiday abroad until DC are vaccinated.

PoptartPoptart · 22/01/2021 22:03

For me, it’s not about whether we will be allowed to travel but more about the worry of what of me or DH or the kids catch it whilst abroad. I highly doubt any of us will be vaccinated by then, so the thought of one of us becoming seriously ill with it in a foreign country fills me with dread.

peaceanddove · 22/01/2021 22:21

Yes, have just booked 10 days in the Italian Lakes at the start of July. Both DH and I have already had Covid, but if we have to pay for added tests in order to travel, then so be it. It will be more than worth it Smile

Totally agree we have transferred our booking from last year. We use the same hotel but I suspect Jersey will be very strict this year so we will have to wait and see Remember if you are going to Jersey make sure you have adequate travel insurance there is no NHS on Jersey.

We’ve booked a cottage for early July in the uk for Wimbledon tennis, although I really don’t now want to stay in anymore and watch TV. It’s something to look forward to and should holidays go ahead the prices will increase, so at least we won’t be paying anymore.

Bit annoyed that when I booked I paid £300 deposit and they are now offering £25 deposit.

I can still see you needing negative tests to fly despite having vaccination. I wonder if the big airlines/travel operators can do something to get the price of tests down or include it in holiday cost and sort them out for travellers.

ihatethecold · 23/01/2021 07:58

Devon in july for 5 of us.

I’m considering booking 4 nights in Corfu at the end of August for me and DH.
I’ve had my first vaccine already.

underneaththeash · 23/01/2021 08:39

We’re booked for a few days in the U.K. in April. A week in scilly isles in may, 2 weeks in France in august. All moved from last year.

MistyMinge2 · 23/01/2021 08:44

We booked last year to go to Mallorca at the end of June. I'm just in the process of seeing if we can move to next year. I'm fairly sure to travel abroad this year, you'll either need to have been vaccinated or have a negative covid test before travel. I have visions of not getting the test results back in time and other scenarios. Don't want to risk booking flights and potentially losing even more money.

superram · 23/01/2021 08:44

Booked a Uk seaside holiday for august. It’s a lovely house but really expensive...... I’d be over the moon to stay in a premier inn in my home town too.

HelloDoris · 23/01/2021 08:46

A week in the IOW in July able to cancel up till the day before travel, that'll do pig.. that'll do..

Dailyhandtowelwash · 23/01/2021 09:28

I forgot to say in my Jersey essay that at the moment you need a negative test to travel there by ferry.

whiteroseredrose · 23/01/2021 09:28

We've not booked yet but are hoping for a week in Sicily at the end of September. But I will book at the last minute. If flights aren't available so be it.

We actually went to Iceland last summer, also at the last minute (3 days before travel!) as rearranged from Easter. We had to test on arrival and the insurance was expensive but everything else was cheaper than usual so it balanced out.

soundofsilence1 · 23/01/2021 09:38

There are currently talks about a travel ban with a mandatory 2 week stay in a quarantine hotel for any arrivals so I would not book anything outside the UK at the moment.

@LimitIsUp

Also, if anyone is procrastinating, UK hotels / self catering accommodation if booking fast (at least it was in Jersey and the Scilly Isles - both of which I looked at)

Oh really ? I was thinking we'd book UK last minute when we know more about what's going on with restrictions etc, and, given we've all booked time off work for Italy in June was thinking we'd just be able to change to UK (assuming that we can travel in UK by that time even if not abroad )

FinallyHere · 23/01/2021 12:43

@GetTheDebtGoneIn2021

I should have been vaccinated by then, so only Covid test for DD.

Why would being vaccinated mean that you didn't need a test?

Vaccination is understood to reduce the severity of the symptoms, not stop you catching or passing on the virus. I'm almost certain you will still need a test in an circumstances where non vaccinated people need a test.

@FinallyHere

The second part of your answer is informative, and tells me something I didn’t know.

We booked to go to Greece in July last year . We thought the world would be back to normal again. Fingers crossed we'll be able to go

Petitmum · 23/01/2021 14:22

Last September I booked 4 return flight to Alicante for July 2021 it was a bargain at only £300........at the time I was feeling confident about being able to travel but I'm not feeling so confident now.
I can change the flights or use them as part payment for another as long as travel is completed before end April 2022.

Tiquismiquis · 23/01/2021 14:34

We’ve got august booked but I’m not confident. I need to renew passports but don’t want to do it yet in case it’s not viable. I think it is entirely possible there will be some counties that open up for tourism but don’t let the UK in. Before Christmas I was almost certain we’d be getting our holiday.

optimisticpessimist01 · 23/01/2021 15:00

My friend recently flew to Amsterdam for work purposes and said the plane was only half full due to a lot of passengers using the free covid test (the normal one if you have symptoms) and them getting turned away from the flights. Just a warning if anyone was going to try and save themselves a couple of hundred quid that it won't work and you won't get on the flight.

We're holding off for now but will probably go visit a few family members dotted around the country (covid allowing and DH and I should've had vaccine by then too) and maybe get a week in Devon/Cornwall. I want to book it now with a refundable option but DH is more pessimistic than I and prefers to hold off until we know we can go.

bellsbuss · 23/01/2021 15:00

We have booked 2 holidays in the uk for July and August , not much availability and we couldn't get the properties we really wanted. We won't go abroad until next year now.

I think you would need a test too unless they change the rules and introduce a "vaccination passport".

Poppyseeds2 · 23/01/2021 15:19

@easterattheready TUI have updated their website. It’s a bit vague at the moment you have to do a Covid test before you fly I think it’s (72 hours prior your flight). Also before you leave your destination you have to do a PCR test and produce a negative test result before you can board your flight home.

As it stands no flights are going yet with TUI. So things could change.

I’m booked for May! Im hoping they cancel sooner rather than later so I don’t have to keep amending my A/L at work.

whiteroseredrose · 23/01/2021 16:38

How much are the tests? When we went to Iceland in August it was about £50 each.
