Wardrobes DH ICU

Wardrobes123 · 19/01/2021 20:30

Just thought I’d create a new thread. To help us to keep track of what’s happened.

My DH was ventilated last week. We’ve had two calls to see him due to him being very close to death. He isn’t stable but he is still alive at the moment. All we can do is wait.

I’m not going to lie, I’m not coping at all. My mum has moved in to help me cope with daily life. We’ve spoken with the children and they know how serious it is. They are also struggling now with the youngest stepping back from schooling when she needs to.

I can’t think ahead. Just usually about the hour or two that we’re living in. It’s very surreal. And incredibly difficult. Doctors are very realistic about prognosis and survival, which is really hard to hear.

I am incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve had as a family. MN is a remarkable place at times.

@groovinpeanut - Flowers my heart goes out to you and your family and I’m so sorry for the loss of your DH, message me anytime X

@intheshadowofthemushroomcloud - Flowers for all your support and messages.

I have had several messages from other mnetters who don’t have their own threads but who are also experiencing this living hell Flowers it’s a horrible journey and we don’t know how it will end but all we can do is hope/pray for a better outcome.

I haven’t always had the energy to post, too fearful of jinxing things and generally the last few days have been very raw and intense. But I’ve read every message and I’m so grateful of the support.

It’s so sweet to have lots of lovely messages.

I’ve been fairly absent from MN as real life got very busy. My eldest was in hospital for two weeks while Mr Wardrobes was also in ICU and everything got very fraught and I was exhausted.

Eldest is now home and things are getting back to normal for school. Work has been very up and down. I have some big decisions to make about that, but it is what it is. Littlest wardrobes seems a bit more secure now but the eldest is now struggling and may need further intensive support (a combination of the horror of the last few months and other underlying issues). Mother wardrobes is also here still. But is going home at times so that we can transition back to whatever our new normal will be.

Mr Wardrobes meanwhile has taken his bloody time but he has made it out of sedation and off the ventilator! He had a lot of covid complications such as blood clots. He also now has complete kidney failure.

But the clots have improved/reduced. The hospital finally got a permanent dialysis line in, so that’s really helped. And his lungs, while they have taken one hell of a battering, they don’t appear to be irreparably damaged. There is damage and he may still be on oxygen for some time yet, and maybe even come home with oxygen (we’re not there yet!). He also has very little muscle tone so has to learn to walk/hold items. But overall he’s made a pretty miraculous recovery.

He left ICU for HDU yesterday. They wanted to film a piece for the news, given how ill he’d been and that he was one of a small number of patients who had been there for a long time. He refused because he’s still fairly ropey and wasn’t feeling his best. Due to the job we do he’d also not want some people seeing him on the local news in this way.

It’s been a bloody long, heart wrenching journey. But he is one of the lucky ones who have recovered. I think often of the kind posters whose husbands didn’t make it through.

I also cannot thank everyone for the support we had as a family. I’ve made a wonderful friend in @InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud both on and off board (and she’s not a bloody troll as mentioned on other less pleasant threads).

I’ve also had messages on here and DM’s from you lovely lot. I know several posters have followed this thread and the first one. I can’t thank you enough for the support. I’ve read every message and I’m so pleased I posted when I did.

So thank you from all of the Wardrobes family. We’re going to take some time to heal both physically (DH) and emotionally (the rest of us!).
