Wardrobes DH ICU

Just thought I’d create a new thread. To help us to keep track of what’s happened.

My DH was ventilated last week. We’ve had two calls to see him due to him being very close to death. He isn’t stable but he is still alive at the moment. All we can do is wait.

I’m not going to lie, I’m not coping at all. My mum has moved in to help me cope with daily life. We’ve spoken with the children and they know how serious it is. They are also struggling now with the youngest stepping back from schooling when she needs to.

I can’t think ahead. Just usually about the hour or two that we’re living in. It’s very surreal. And incredibly difficult. Doctors are very realistic about prognosis and survival, which is really hard to hear.

I am incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve had as a family. MN is a remarkable place at times.

@groovinpeanut - Flowers my heart goes out to you and your family and I’m so sorry for the loss of your DH, message me anytime X

@intheshadowofthemushroomcloud - Flowers for all your support and messages.

I have had several messages from other mnetters who don’t have their own threads but who are also experiencing this living hell Flowers it’s a horrible journey and we don’t know how it will end but all we can do is hope/pray for a better outcome.

I haven’t always had the energy to post, too fearful of jinxing things and generally the last few days have been very raw and intense. But I’ve read every message and I’m so grateful of the support.

@Hugoslavia - yes DH has been ventilated before! Although he’d love the idea of a 48 hour Phil Collins concert (my idea of hell 😂). When DH came out of sedation last time he thought the hospital was under siege. So I have a small idea of potential delusions. The hospital didn’t warn me about it last time but I’ve since read up. It can take longer to get over, the longer he is vented and I think we’re on week 3 now (?!) lost track of time.

I know it will still be an up and down process and there are worries if he can’t get off ventilation. The hospital warned me there may be permanent damage so it may be difficult to wean off and could take weeks. But it is what it is, and I’m happy that he’s made such brilliant progress.

@StrugglingICUnurse - thank you. 50% is brilliant isn’t it. He’s moved out of the extremely high risk group which is fabulous. I know there’s always still a risk when a patient is ventilated but his team are bloody fantastic and I know they are keeping a close eye on him. I can’t begin to imagine the things youve been through as a nurse this year. All I will say is as a family member going through the battle is that I’m beyond grateful for the work you do. And forever indebted by the fantastic staff carrying out all of the daily care for him. The nurses on ICU are so incredibly specialist and knowledgeable I’m in absolute awe of you all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️

In other news we have a double celebration coming up next week - it’s my mums birthday so I need to order something fabulous for her, as she is a superstar.

It’s also our 10 year wedding anniversary. I’m not thinking about that milestone just yet. But fingers crossed he continues to make progress. It would be lovely if he was awake for it so I could talk to him, but I also know that may not happen. It’ll be ok though because he’s still here and he’s making good steps forward. If he continues to heal slowly then that’s the best bloody present I could ask for.

When Mr Mushroom was in ITU he thought he was on the starship enterprise... then when I got to FaceTime him I saw he was on the old Paediatric ITU which had a 'space theme' mural on the walls ... he was also convinced the nurses station was where the space ship was being driven... which actually made sense tbh...

Such wonderfully cheering news for a sunshiny Friday, Wardrobes. Thank you for letting us know when you have so much else to be doing and thinking about. I so hope he continues to gently, gently creep towards getting off that ventilator. Sending you all the love x

Wardrobes123 · 29/01/2021 12:45

He’s on CPAP!! 🎉 only briefly. They’ll give him breaks but they managed to get him on it this morning.

He’s oxygen is also lower and he was coping for the time he was on it. They’ve said they’ll give him breaks because it’s a lot of work for him to be breathing. They also have changed the drugs.

I’ll let you know about any weird stories we get! Nothing so far and he’s in a standard ICU bed - so no space themes (Which must be really disconcerting!).

It’s all good here and I am over the moon with his progress!
