Still European

Does anyone know why people are putting this on their FB profile picture?

Obviously when we left the EU we didn't leave the continent, we are still part of europe. Is it because some people think we aren't or something?

So saying things like "I am still European" to show that you wish that the UK was still in the EU doesn't make any sense. Just use a different word.
I'm not. I'm saying it because it is comforting to me to point out that dragging me out of the EU doesn't mean I don't get to call myself European anymore. And there are is a massive crowd of people who don't like that, who want Brexit to mean we aren't European anymore, who seek to make British patriotism the only feeling of cultural pride acceptable. I'm saying Still European to them to say a big fuck off to that. It's saying that whatever Brexit does I am still culturally European and no referendum changes that.

I do wish I was still in the EU. Stating that despite Brexit I am still European is a crumb of comfort.

There are 44 countries in Europe. There are 27 countries in the EU. So I don't think that I am pedantic to point out that calling the using the terms EU and Europe interchangeably is not correct. So saying things like "I am still European" to show that you wish that the UK was still in the EU doesn't make any sense. Just use a different word.

This is getting boring now, MeringueCloud. We know that there are other European countries which are not in the EU. We know that the terms are not interchangeable. We also know that our relationship with the vast majority of European countries has fundamentally changed. Consequently, it makes perfect sense to say that our relationship with Europe has changed, even if there is a small number of countries where that does not apply. Only a pedant would try to argue otherwise.

Personally, I deeply regret the way in which our relationship with Europe has changed as a result of us leaving the EU, and I am sad that my rights have been taken from me. The Brexiteers cannot, however, take from me my sense of cultural affinity with Europe. I am, and always will be European.And one day, I hope that I will again be a citizen of the EU.

That's not my experience so maybe that's why we are looking at this from different angles. The people I know who voted leave only wanted to leave the EU, not Europe.

I also agree with pp who said that the EU and Europe are completely different things and many people talk about them as if they are one and the same.

Because I live abroad and don't want my neighbours to assume I in any way agree with it.

Because I can no longer bring my British children up in Britain unless we leave their father behind.

Because it's an identity I've always appreciated, and I want to emphasize that appreciation in the face of such destructive rhetoric coming from many of my countrymen.

That's not my experience so maybe that's why we are looking at this from different angles. The people I know who voted leave only wanted to leave the EU, not Europe.

We do have very different experiences then. I know a tiny handful of Brexiteers (DH's grandmother and aunt and that's about it) but the overwhelming impression I have of the national debate was of it being the leave side who conflated Europe and the EU and which, I think, would be pissed off to be reminded we are still European. Anything I can do to contribute to the that pissed offness I do with gusto.

Me too, life was so simple then!

Some very memorable teachers who no doubt had a part in shaping who we are today 😊

The BBC now talk about "Europe" as something the UK is not part of. They say - we talked to a "European", rather than "someone from the EU." It must be a politically influenced decision to do that.
