Still European

Does anyone know why people are putting this on their FB profile picture?

Obviously when we left the EU we didn't leave the continent, we are still part of europe. Is it because some people think we aren't or something?

We live in France but are British. My son is at university in London. When he goes back after Christmas, we don’t know when he will able to come back as France is not allowing anyone coming from an non EU country in.
That’s what leaving the EU means. No freedom of movement.
I had no vote in the referendum. Some of my rights have been taken away from me. Yes, I am still angry.

@Fuckingcrustybread because Brexiteers got their way, the democratic exercise has been actioned and we have left the EU. If you voted for Brexit you probably don't feel bereft at what you've lost, but many do. For many it is an emotional subject and they have lost a great deal in the process. People are still entitled to their opinions and to many Brexit is a steaming pile or shit omitting a really unpleasant odour across this green and supposedly pleasant land.

It wasn't just older people who voted out . I know most people think it was , but really very few people who voted did amongst my age group and friends .. ( though I do admit many did and I am sorry for it ) ..

None of my family elders did and only one ( now former) friend ... and I am over 60 ..

@wowfudge

Now I think you are lying.

Why?

You are making this into a big thing. I asked for the reason as I am genuinely curious and so far no-one has said they have done it or why.

If it's just because people are upset at leaving it still doesn't make sense to me. Yes, we are all still European. That's a given. That's obvious, it was never going to change.

Still pissed off would probably be better if that is what it's about.

I don't see how Still European relates to people voting remain. A person who voted leave could also put that statement on their profile pic. It's meaningless. It's like posting your 40th birthday and next day posting, still 40. It doesn't need to be said, everyone already knows.

That's the bit that I'm trying to get anwers to. I'm probably not explaining it very well.

OP, you sound a bit stupid. Either that, or you're being disingenuous.

For many people, European citizenship has been an essential part of their identity for as long as they can remember. Losing their citizenship has been a huge and painful blow. On our first day out of the EU, they are therefore choosing to express the fact that the European aspect of their identity is still important to them, despite the rights that have been taken from them. That identity is the one remaining thing that the Brexiteers cannot steal.

Nobody is stupid enough to believe that we have left the continent of Europe, but it seems that there are plenty of people who are stupid enough not to understand how significant a loss this will be for many, many people. They are entitled to express their sense of loss in whatever way they choose.

Kendodd · 01/01/2021 18:28

Oh come on OP, nobody's that stupid they don't understand what this means.
If you expect everyone to just quietly 'get behind Brexit' you are wrong. People have lost rights they value dearly, some have lost livelihoods, some have even lost their lives because of the racism Brexit stired up.

And if you think it's bad now just wait until the blue passports start arriving.

I don't expect anyone to do anything, I was just looking for an answer.

Thanks, @AlexaShutUp that's a good way of putting it.

OP it IS a big thing.. Dont you see? .. its not about geography.. its about actually being part of a community, with the rights and freedoms we had.. The EU community . which has now been taken away from us and pushed us into an uncertain and almost certainly far more restricted future and for what ? .
.
Yes it was a vote. Yes, we 'lost' .. But still its such a big thing , such a big retrograde step to almost half of us who voted.. Such a wrong thing for almost half of us who voted..
We want to show solidarity with being European .. we want to be European

Its that simple.

I am english (cant bear to give the word a capital E anymore) for many generations back, no chance for me to get out .. but if I could get EU citizenship back ,and a passport to another EU country id do it tomorrow)

That's why it would be best to ask your FB friends who have posted this, directly. They can give you the answer you seek OP.

I have dual citizenship, so very much still European and bloody glad.
'Remoaner' is such a tedious phrase. Yawn.

You started this thread OP - you're the one making a big thing of it by doing so.

You've posted to antagonise. If you genuinely haven't, then try a bit of critical thinking.

@giletrouge

Because my European citizenship and rights have been ripped from me against my will. By old white men, mostly.
HTH.

I’m not a man.

Just because a small majority of the population voted for Brexit, doesn't mean it's not a "steaming pile of shit". Sadly. It's not disrespectful of democracy to point that out.

MrsBrunch · 01/01/2021 18:40

Yes, obviously Brexit is a big thing, affecting millions of people. I can see how saying we're still European does bring comfort to some. It's not something I would find comforting because it's not one of the things that was ever going to change.

I take that back. Taking into account non-voters, only a minority of the population voted for Brexit.

European in spririt, feeling we have so much in common with fellow Europeans, etc, etc.

If people feel that strongly about the EU, they should campaign to re-join, write to their MP etc and make it a GE issue

It is what democracy is all about after all 👍
