Most overrated song ever!

Ok I'm sure this will have been done before but I'm currently listening to Greatest Hits Radio's top 500 favourite songs countdown. They've just played Purple Rain and whilst I can appreciate it's a decent song I really don't get the almost universal love for it. I'm sure Hey Jude and Imagine will be along shortly which are IMO the most over rated songs of all time. I'm also the only person I know who isn't keen on Fairytale of New York.

What songs do you dislike that nearly everyone else seems to love?

It's raining men
Imagine
All I want for Christmas
I will survive
Love shack
And loads more that I can't remember

SmudgeButt · 01/01/2021 15:54

Anything by Oasis - they are so whiney!

All those carp versions of Hallelujah. Especially that dreadful gospel choir version from X factor a few Christmases ago.

anything by the Pogues (who I generally quite like) with a pennywhistle. Especially if I've had a few drinks the night before.

Anything sung by a whispy lispy female as seems to be a favourite style currently.

Anything by Whitney Houston, especially her bellowed version when she destroyed I Will Always Love You.

Anything sung by anyone with a need to warble all the way up and down the scales rather than just sing a song in a clear voice.

Anything by Arianna Grande or Ellen Goulding (if that's the right name - the one who did the shampoo commercial where she was "training" her hair - how stupid)

mumu54 · 01/01/2021 15:54

Bohemian Rhapsody - boring and far, far too long

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2021 15:59

Hallelujah is absolute crap

It most certainly is. You hear people putting their heart and soul into it, but it's a pointless, rambling, unflushable turd of a song - didn't LC write about 20 different verses for it?

I always cringe when you get people choosing it as a specifically religious song for a church service setting - just because of that one word - when it most clearly isn't. Mind you, Jerusalem is often voted as Britain's favourite 'hymn' - might as well vote for navy as your favourite shade of red.

WildRosie · 01/01/2021 16:03

Anything by Oasis and U2. Almost anything by Bob Dylan.

There's scores of records I don't like - it's ultimately down to personal taste - but that doesn't necessarily make them overrated.

Purplethrow · 01/01/2021 16:05

A Brimful of Asha - what the bleedin hell was that all about?

I’ve just googled it’s meaning and I’m still non the wiser Confused . Anyway it’s a shit song .

BigBadVoodooHat · 01/01/2021 16:10

Almost anything by Bob Dylan.

Careful, now. You don’t want to summon that batshit Bob Dylan tr*ll! Shock

JimmyTheWeed · 01/01/2021 16:14

OP,you're not the only one who doesn't like Fairytale of New York. I also think Purple Rain,Hey Jude and Imagine are vastly overrated.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2021 16:26

Angels by Robbie Williams.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2021 16:27

And anything by Sinatra and other Crooners. And elvis.

Mochudubh · 01/01/2021 16:40

@MyCatHatesEverybody

They're now playing I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. I assume Bono is singing about humility or something.
The Chimes cover version is far better IMO.
tulipsaremyfave · 01/01/2021 17:18

That rubbish about walking 500 miles.

MyCatHatesEverybody · 01/01/2021 18:27

Well I missed the number one slot as I fell asleep. I can't have not been Bohemian Rhapsody though as number 2 was David Bowie. Just as well really as I'd have missed out on the dream I just had - travelling on a ferry with the cast of Hi Di Hi and Russ Abbot Confused

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll I missed that call centre reality show, thank goodness my boss isn't like that.

@Mochudubh I totally forgot that version ever existed, I agree it was much better!

"I saw the sign" by Ace of Base, couldn't stand it then, can't stand it now!
"Fight Song" by Rachel Platten.
"Save tonight" by Eagle Eye Cherry.
"Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia.

That is my ultimate torture soundtrack!

OrigamiOwl · 01/01/2021 20:46

Anything by Oasis.

Soutiner · 01/01/2021 22:01

Anything by that caterwauling she devil Beyoncé. Especially that awful
If you like it put a ring on it!

A

Crinkle77 · 01/01/2021 22:09

John Lennon's Imagine. My God it's dreary!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/01/2021 22:09

Correction: everything by Beyonce EXCEPT for this:

ageingdisgracefully · 01/01/2021 22:11

Not getting the Love Shack hate.

Overrated:

DP they know it's Christmas.
Hallelujah.
Stand by Me.
Imagine, closely followed by Woman. Can't stand John Lennon.
Purple Rain.
Mull of Kintyre.
Anything by Brotherhood of Man (showing age).
That crap by St Winifred's Choir. Bloody awful. Was in the charts for yonks.
Every Breath you Take.

TheDoctorDances · 01/01/2021 22:12

Beat me to it. Absolute drivel.

Redglitter · 01/01/2021 22:12

Since we're just passed Christmas I have to nominate Fairytale of New York I hate it with a passion. Its anything but Christmassy and its beyond me why its so popular.

Although the version Cameron Barnes from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers & Blythe Duff released is fab

TheDoctorDances · 01/01/2021 22:13

@TheDoctorDances

Beat me to it. Absolute drivel.
That should have copied in a quote about Love Shack. The B52s can get in the sea.
