Why did the Teasmaid die out?

Seems such a great idea, my grandparents had one but, as I recall, rarely used it.

An alarm clock that makes you a cuppa? It sounds wonderful, so why was it so short lived?

Frìends have one ( I think a Goblin? But don't quote me) which they have used every morning of their married life in their home - 45 years now.

They no longer sleep together but he returns from the spare bedroom at the sound of the teasmade striking up and they start their day together over a cup of tea.

Sections have given up the ghost over time, but Ebay has been the lifesaver over recent years. They now have a box full of spare jugs etc ready if needed.

I never had a teasmaid, but I used to have a Moulinex coffee maker with a timer.

I used to put the mugs in the freezer with milk in them so it would slowly thaw out and be fresh by morning.

Sadly the timer failed.

@NightCzar

I always thought it was a teasmade. Like "tea's made!"
So did I!

@draughtycatflap

Why do I need to be unexpectedly splattered with hot liquid at an ungodly hour? I have my husband for that.

My dp sustained a nasty burn on a teasmaid as a child. Not as innocuous as they look. Or maybe better for pensioners. What sort of parents of toddlers get to drink tea in bed anyway?

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 10/12/2020 00:12

I've just Googled it because I want one. Astonishingly on the same page on Amazon was

So disappointed it isn't available until after Christmas...

There is a Swan Vintage Teasmade in the Lidl special buys next week for £50

Grin That incense burner!

KiposWonderbeasts · 10/12/2020 05:57

I had one as a student in the late 80s. The noise was awful; in the end I decided it was better to give up tea than have thing thing screaming at me when I was barely awake.

daisypond · 10/12/2020 07:10

I’ve got one, bought new a few years ago. I do find it doesn’t get the water hot enough, though. I think a mini kettle in the bedroom would do the job better, and wouldn’t take up so much space.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 10/12/2020 07:27

I inherited one from GParents but found the noise woke me up long before the alarm. However, I rather liked the whole design of it, and the allure of ‘promise’ that it held.

These days, it’s a tea tray taken up last thing, and a kettle in the bedroom which I can almost switch on from my bed.

During summer, I leave the jug of milk sitting in water. Keeps it cool enough.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 10/12/2020 07:31

@Mildmanneredmum - thanks for the link 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I now have the dubious pleasure of Amazon sending me questionable suggestions as to what else I’d like to buy... 😁. (I like to throw them a curved ball every now and then(

Lidl offer

To my eye it looks old-fashioned

NoDontDoIt · 10/12/2020 08:07

I like the idea, but cant help thinking your thermos flask of milk would work just as well with a mini kettle and a cup with bag brought upstairs at bedtime. Alarm goes off, flick kettle switch

andawaywego · 10/12/2020 09:50

My parents had a teas made for about 2 weeks. I remember sleeping in the next room and hearing the dramatic gurgling and popping noises. The thing sounded rusty and knackered even when it was new. The water was never very hot yet you could still get a nasty scald from the thing. I think they gave up because they didn't like the UHT milk and the whole thing about setting it up was a faff.

One of those little kettles they have in premier inns would work better. But I just use my DH. He drops a cup of coffee on the bedside table in the morning. Job done.

42andcounting · 12/12/2020 12:10

My parents used to use sterilised milk with theirs, which was virtually indestructible. Do they even still sell stera milk? Grin

MoreKnackeredThanYou · 12/12/2020 12:15

I’ve never seen one but I was browsing Argos toasters at the weekend and saw a toaster that could also heat beans OR an egg up at the same time as your bread was toasting!

HilaryThorpe · 12/12/2020 12:20

We had one. Our children were primed to arrive to arrive in our bedroom to start the day when it went off. It once got accidently reset to 2am.....
I think we gave up when ours broke and we couldn't get the same model.
