Why did the Teasmaid die out?

Seems such a great idea, my grandparents had one but, as I recall, rarely used it.

An alarm clock that makes you a cuppa? It sounds wonderful, so why was it so short lived?

I've asked for one for christmas, my DH thinks I'm crazy but when you have to get up at 5am anyway for work that first cup of tea already made would be ammmmmmaaaaaaazzzzzzzzing

spiderlight · 08/12/2020 11:58

Aww - my nana had one of these! I was fascinated by it.

SlothMama · 08/12/2020 12:00

Just found one on Amazon for £80 no thanks

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 08/12/2020 12:01

My friend has a mini fridge as her bedside table......he keeps snacks and milk in there.

The milk is for his one cup water thing he keeps on his bedside fridge for making cups of tea and hot chocolate..........I think he's a fucking genius and view him in awe. He's definitely on a higher plain compared to us mere mortals 😂😂😂

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 08/12/2020 12:03

We had one a swan one few years ago. It was still very noisy but made a nice enough cuppa...sadly we lost it (along with many other things) in a house fire. We replaced it with a more modern one but it didn’t properly boil the water sufficiently to make a decent cuppa tea, I found the same with a One Cup.
My parents had a kettle (and vanity unit) in their bedroom, they took a tray with cups and milk each night and it was fine. I think they put something cold under the milk in summer.

Ozgirl75 · 08/12/2020 12:03

@SlothMama but do the maths tho - they last 20 years, that’s 7300 days. Take off 300 for holidays, that’s less than 1p per cuppa.
Even if you use it every day for a year it’s 20p a day. Bargain.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 08/12/2020 12:03

His not her.

He's a fecking genius with a penchant for snacky snacks and hot cups of tea but he's not able to switch genders just yet 😂

draughtycatflap · 08/12/2020 12:06

They seem a bit antiquated and eccentric like a whimsical Wallace and Grommet invention to me. And I don’t understand why anyone would want to eat or drink anything in bed but each to their own. Enjoy your cuppas!

sashh · 08/12/2020 12:06

My parents woke up to a bedroom full of smoke when theirs broke.

NightCzar · 08/12/2020 12:08

I always thought it was a teasmade. Like "tea's made!"

BarbaraofSeville · 08/12/2020 12:10

@sashh

My parents woke up to a bedroom full of smoke when theirs broke.
Googling suggests that they were somewhat of a fire hazard.

Isn't that the point, it's a bit of a play on words, like having a maid who's made the tea?

I had one from a charity shop that used to squirt boiling water over me. That was an excellent alarm even before the clock alarm went off.

BikeRunSki · 08/12/2020 12:17

My GPs had one. The tea was rubbish.

whoami24601 · 08/12/2020 12:19

My mum is obsessed with teasmaids! She has about 10 and uses one every day. I think I can't imagine a life where I have the time for a brew in bed every day! They do still exist though - I bought my brother a more modern one for his 40th (he asked for it!)

TroysMammy · 08/12/2020 12:19

Where's the joke?

Curlybrunette · 08/12/2020 12:20

I've got one and I LOVE it!

I also worry about the milk so I freeze it in the mug, and at bedtime take up the mug and a tea bag. Boom in the morning about 5 minutes before the alarm time is set the kettle starts.

I only use it one work days, so the water goes into the pot, I get in the shower and by the time I get out I have a lovely brewed cuppa

viques · 08/12/2020 12:26

Hanging about on this street corner in the cold waiting for the blumming goblin joke.

(Missed an l out first time, was going to leave the typo because this is MN, then I remembered it’s Tuesday not Friday.)

GreyishDays · 08/12/2020 12:28

I always thought they kept the milk cold. If they don’t, aren’t they just a kettle?

rubydoobydoo · 08/12/2020 12:29

My mum found her original one in a loft clear-out in the early 2000's, and I nabbed it! It was the loudest thing in the world and took forever to make tea.

I have a Nespresso machine now with Bluetooth so you can set it to make coffee, it's much quieter and the milk is fine sitting in the frother overnight. Only problem is I lost the lid for the water part and one of the cats drinks out of it.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 08/12/2020 12:29

I've never seen one in real life, but I love the concept.

I've always assumed this is a case of expectations not matching the reality - other posters have said that they're noisy, so that's probably a large part of it.

devildeepbluesea · 08/12/2020 12:32

I have a hot water dispenser that pours a perfect quantity of boiling water after about 30 seconds. It is very noisy but that's a small price to pay for coffee in bed!

I take up my milk in an insulated bag every night. Stays cold all night. I wouldn't be without it.

Mildmanneredmum · 08/12/2020 12:32

I've just Googled it because I want one. Astonishingly on the same page on Amazon was

www.amazon.co.uk/Porcelain-Ceramic-Craftwork-Backflow-Figurine/dp/B07HD74Z43/ref=sr_1_16?dchild=1&keywords=teasmade&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1607430503&sr=8-16

Sorry, you'll have to cut and paste

Mildmanneredmum · 08/12/2020 12:33

Oh, the link posted!

draughtycatflap · 08/12/2020 12:33

Why do I need to be unexpectedly splattered with hot liquid at an ungodly hour? I have my husband for that.
