Why did the Teasmaid die out?

Seems such a great idea, my grandparents had one but, as I recall, rarely used it.

An alarm clock that makes you a cuppa? It sounds wonderful, so why was it so short lived?

@Mildmanneredmum that is ... words fail me 😂

NotSorry · 08/12/2020 13:08

My grandparents had one and they always used it

They didn't have any central heating so that would stop the milk going off

Their only heating was a 3 bar fire in the living room and a single bar in the kitchen. They had a freestanding paraffin heater they used if it got super cold.

SlipperTripper · 08/12/2020 13:13

I have one!

Only complaint is that you can't turn the backlight of the clock off totally, which is a pain, but fashioned the teasmaid an eye mask so problem solved.

Love it 😊

Drogonssmile · 08/12/2020 13:15

I've bought one for my mum and stepdad for Xmas. They bring back memories or my gran (mums mum) who had one for years and I thought it was the best invention ever.

W3dontdoduvets · 08/12/2020 13:18

I have a Barisieur, today’s version. It was £350 and I’ve used it twice!

TurquoiseDragon · 08/12/2020 13:33

I'm 52 now. I have a memory of staying with Nana and Grandad when my DBro was born (I was 3), and sleeping in a little camp bed in their bedroom. I crawled up between them in the morning and had a drink of weak milky tea from the teasmaid they had.

I wouldn't have a teasmaid myself, but I cherish the memory.

CloudPop · 08/12/2020 13:46

@Mildmanneredmum

I've just Googled it because I want one. Astonishingly on the same page on Amazon was

www.amazon.co.uk/Porcelain-Ceramic-Craftwork-Backflow-Figurine/dp/B07HD74Z43/ref=sr_1_16?dchild=1&keywords=teasmade&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1607430503&sr=8-16

Sorry, you'll have to cut and paste

Oh my God what is that

I had one until very recently, a few weeks ago in fact! I kept the milk in the fridge in a small jug with a bit of tin foil on and in summer it kept the milk cold over night as the ceramic jug was so cold. I loved it sitting in bed in the morning having a cup of tea. Lovely way to wake up! I'll probably get another one. I'm missing it!

crochetmonkey74 · 08/12/2020 14:12

I'm fascinated by this and do fancy one but for all you teasmaid lovers - do you not get out of bed for a wee first thing? That's what I have to do first every day!

Botherfreedays · 08/12/2020 14:35

I've always wanted one but every time I've ever mentioned it I've been met with weird looks which has put me off.

PortalooSunset · 08/12/2020 14:51

I prefer coffee in the morning, got one of these: uk.russellhobbs.com/product/brew-and-go-22630
The only off-putting thing about it is the clock - the blue LEDs are the brightest I've seen in my life! Even covered with 2 layers of duct tape it's still visible! But it's forgiven because it wakes me up every morning with a hot cup of wake up juice Grin

DMCWelshcakes · 08/12/2020 15:19

I've got one on my Christmas list. And a breakfast tray with legs for use in bed.

I am really 87 years old. Xmas Grin

@Mildmanneredmum I was curious about 3 hours ago ... how do I explain this?! Blush

We had one as a wedding gift. Used to wake us up about 1hr before we needed to be up. It was soooo noisy. It had an unfortunate accident.

MotherWol · 08/12/2020 16:15

I’m a coffee person so I have one of these www.hartsofstur.com/melitta-look-therm-timer-black-filter-coffee-machine-1011-16-6764395.html

It’s great, you just put water and coffee in the night before and set the timer, then in the morning DH brings me a freshly made cup of coffee in bed!

tobee · 08/12/2020 16:22

I had a lovely old fashioned one from a second hand shop. Looked lovely and I liked being gently awakened with the noise it boiling and waking. Until it went haywire and would make me pots of tea at random times of the night.

Now I have a travel fridge left over from when my fridge broke down and an old kettle. Bit more reliable!

zeddybrek · 08/12/2020 16:54

DH loves his! Got him one last year from Argos and it isn't loud at all. He is a tea fiend and loves having a tea before facing the day. He buys milk satchets in bulk which solves the milk issue.

Yes!! And my bathroom is downstairs so I may as well put the kettle on Grin

I love the idea of a teasmaid, my nanna used to have one long ago.

nosswith · 08/12/2020 17:50

It seems to be one of those gadgets that never caught on. I remember the 'buttoner' instead of a needle and thread as another. The sort of things advertised in morning slots of E4 or ITVBe.

RosesandPumpkins · 08/12/2020 18:44

I had one a few years ago when I had a baby but the tea was far too strong by the time it had finished its drip drip dripping so I never used it

Sunmoonstars77 · 08/12/2020 18:52

My nan had one, my mum now has it in the garage in storage. I don't think she wants to part with it. It probably wouldn't work now if she tried to plug it in! It was noisy, that I do remember. Nan loved it though.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2020 18:54

DM is on about her third that I remember. She never has functioned before her first dose of caffiene for the day, so minimal movement first is a win for her. Especially before the arthritis set in.
