How often do you change your kitchen towel?

Trut · 11/11/2020 18:15

If you use it mainly for wiping hands (not dishes)?

And while we are at it, when do you replace your dish sponge...every week? Month? When it looks utterly manky 😃

And your toothbrush?

Kitchen hand towel every 3 or 4 days, if I've washed and dried by hand I grab a clean tea towel and then it goes straight into wash so 1 use only but I possibly hand wash every 10 days or so. Cloths for cleaning the work surface are a one use only again. Sponge is regularly microwaved to kill germs.

evenBetter · 12/11/2020 00:12

Hand towel in kitchen- every few weeks
Scouring sponge- when it falls apart
Toothbrush- whenever it breaks

grassisjeweled · 12/11/2020 02:23

Champagne flutes and Lead crystal?

Kate?

notangelinajolie · 12/11/2020 02:32

@Trut

Thanks for your replies. I now realise I am slovenly 😯

Why do you change your kitchen towel everyday?

I change it everyday because it is on a rail which is right next to the washing machine which is on everyday. I just throw it in with whatever I am washing. Plus Covid has made me more aware of germs Grin
ThePawtriarchy · 12/11/2020 02:41

I put sponges in the dishwasher every few days.

macdhui · 12/11/2020 03:37

Hand towel / tea towels / kitchen cloths daily - all go in a hot wash. Go through several tea towels daily.

Time40 · 12/11/2020 03:41

It’s really not outrageous to wash cloths and hand towels daily. Why on earth would anyone lie about it??

Because this is MN, and people here do competitive lying to try to convince strangers on the internet that they are really, really, really clean.

MsChatterbox · 12/11/2020 04:00

All I will say is I do not replace things as often as people on this thread but I also have not suffered from illness due to this.

MonsterKidz · 12/11/2020 04:01

Tea Towel - daily
Kitchen sponge -once a week but also use cloths which l switch out daily
bathroom hand towels - every 2nd day
Bathroom towels - I have 6 white bath towels that stay in a hamper beside the shower. Use one, hang it up, use it again, put it in laundry. When i get 4 or 5 of them I wash them.

I was kitchen towels, cloths, hand towels together on their own on a high wash. I save them for a few days and then wash a bunch together.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/11/2020 04:31

Maybe every 4 or 5 days? When that clean towel smell has worn off. Tea towels - again quite random. Sometimes they barely get used. Probably the same - slightly more than once a week. All household linens go on a separate 60 deg wash here.

Kitchen sponges keep going until they fall apart - pour boiling water from the kettle over them or use the microwave method to keep them hygienic.

@planningaheadtoday

I think I do things differently. My mum thinks I'm quite odd.

I use T towels, the type you wipe glass with, not the fluffier ones. I have about 50 and I use them as I would paper towels, kitchen sponge and paper kitchen towel.

For each job I use a new one and put it straight into my washing machine afterwards. I might get through up to 10 a day. Then I launder them and start over.

They are clean but nowhere near pristine. They are all very absorbent as they are washed do much. I keep them in a drawer in easy reach.

I've used this method for 20 years. I do use kitchen roll when frying food to absorb grease. But one roll will last 6 months in my house.

I do this as well. A large stack of thin, clean white towels; could use a dozen a day depending on what's going on in the kitchen.

Bathroom hand towels changed daily.

anxiiousone · 12/11/2020 05:22

@WunWun

I wash the oven gloves whenever I see the dog licking them.
😂😂😂😂😂
Terriblecreature · 12/11/2020 05:34

I change the dish towel about 2-3 times a day. Only because I dry the dishes with it and they end up really wet.

If it wasn't soaking I think I would change everyday anyway. I do this with the hand towel in my bathroom.

Toothbrush probably every 2 months I would say.

I use Dettol wipes for counter tops and use a sponge for dishes, probably change this once a week or if I have really had to scrub a pot I have burned something on 🙈 happens quite often.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 05:38

kitchen towel, a couple of times a day, but I do end up using it as an oven glove, or yo mol up a spill or similar.
Sponge, most days, I keep packs of them in my cupboard.
Toothbrush, every couple of months I guess?

KatherineJaneway · 12/11/2020 05:39

Towel is usually every 2 days or so. It gets wet with the amount of handwashing we do.

Dishcloth gets washed once a week unless another reason comes up to change it.

Sponge gets changed when the harder part underneath dissappears or starts to become ineffective.

Toothbrush when the brishles start to fan out. So as and when.

Gumbo · 12/11/2020 05:55

I'm astonished by how many people wash tea towels daily... surely they're fairly clean anyway if they're used for drying freshly washed hands?

I wash mine every 3 or 4 days.
I use a brush for washing dishes...presumably it gets washed at the same time in the anti-bac washing up liquid in the sink
I use a disposable cloth for the surfaces that goes in the microwave regularly for 2 mins which supposedly kills pretty much all bugs, then chuck it away when it looks dead.

I've never made anyone in the family ill yet Grin

user1487194234 · 12/11/2020 06:24

Change kitchen towel and cloths every day

Jerble · 12/11/2020 06:52

Kitchen towel twice a week (only use it to dry our hands), bathroom hand towels and bath towels once a week. Toothbrush when the bristles go (quicker for 2 of us than the others).

damnthatanxiety · 12/11/2020 07:53

@Aquamarine1029

Fresh kitchen towel and cloth brought out Every morning, will use another fresh one throughout the day if needed. I don't use sponges because they're disgusting.
Why is a sponge any more disgusting than a cloth? As long as they are washed out and replaced at the same frequency, surely they are the same, no?
silentpool · 12/11/2020 08:00

Dishtowel daily. Sponge also gets thrown in the wash. Toothbrush head, every three months.

Oblomov20 · 12/11/2020 08:04

Twice a week. Daily is ott and harming the environment.

FelicityPike · 12/11/2020 08:06

Kitchen towel- daily.
Kitchen cloth- daily.
Kitchen sponge- microwaved each morning, binned when it needs replacing.
Toothbrush- every 12 weeks.

Pascha · 12/11/2020 09:21

Teatowels probably daily or every two days. I'm not religious about it.
Cloths once a week
Sponge when it starts to fall apart (few days, maybe a week?)
Cleaning cloths after each use.

I've never owned a kitchen towel.

Becles · 12/11/2020 09:29

Hand towels get changed weekly (or immediately after any visitors leave for loo ones)
Drying up or tea towels changed a couple of times a week
Kitchen / bathroom sponges and jay cloths are changed when they look tired. They get a good rinse through every time we use, and chucked in the washing machine with the towels on a hot wash.
Towels changed every 3-4 weeks

All washed at 60c with extra rinse

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/11/2020 09:31

I'm very surprised with these responses and I think maybe a few have been guilted into fibbing!

We have a dishwasher and I've long since phased out anything that can't be dishwashed so basically my sink is for filling the drinks/kettle/pans, soaking the odd thing and washing my hands while cooking. So my towels aren't ever grubby and are hung in their own compartment in the kitchen to dry after every use then washed weekly. I have pan scourers that last years because they probably get used once every couple of months.

Obvs my dishcloth for wiping up is used eternally so I probably bleach it every other day and change it completely every other, other day.
