Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

OP posts:
JinglingHellsBells · 06/11/2020 08:56

She’s likely using what’s app to send or receive texts

But it depends on her phone as to whether it works in someone else's house, surely?

Hangingover · 06/11/2020 08:56

Have you ever checked her browsing history to see what she's done?

Yes, do this. You definitely won't end up on the news.

Meuniere · 06/11/2020 08:57

I really wouldn’t think twice about it.
Many people share their password when they have guests over or friends etc...
You have unlimited data.

What on Earth is it an issue? Because she didn’t ask? When you actually are trusting her with things that are much more valuable (in all sense of the word?
Strange

Btw I’m 50yo. I dint think that an issue with ‘age’ and been out of touch.

Escapeplanning · 06/11/2020 08:58

What does it even matter what she's downloaded. It's on her devices, not yours. How stupid.

Meuniere · 06/11/2020 08:59

also if she is doing all the work she needs too do in the time she is there and has always done so (so not drop in the amount done etc...) you can be pretty sure that she is still working her arse off. Not spending her time watching videos or MNtting.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/11/2020 09:01

Who said she us playing on the internet? She's probably putting on a spotify playing or podcast on to listen to while she works. That's not unreasonable
Of course it is, i don't pay her to enjoy her job, I like the hired help to be miserable. And she cannot be trusted because everyone knows cleaning is cover for paedophiles etc so they can use other people's WIFI to avoid being caught. That's why I only give her the house keys and total access to my home

JinglingHellsBells · 06/11/2020 09:06

why doesn't she download what she wants before she goes out to work?

I really don't see the need.

Burnthurst187 · 06/11/2020 09:07

I would be annoyed that she didn't ask the first time round and I also don't think she needs to be on your WiFi

Isn't she meant to be cleaning?

Maybe she could hop in the bath for a quick wash then make herself some lunch too

ladybee28 · 06/11/2020 09:08

@Bluntness100

Tell her you felt a bit uncomfortable with her taking the password without asking, and ask what she uses the network for. If you're happy with it, great. If not, explain why

Oh my, this is so cringe, yes treat her like she’s a twelve year old.

Since when was telling someone how you feel treating them like a twelve year old? If the OP feels weird about it, that feeling isn't going to go away because a bunch of strangers on the internet told her she was being batshit. So she might as well own her batshit, and talk about it like adults, no?

I'd take an actual conversation with someone any day rather than having them post about me on internet forums behind my back, or say a flat 'no' to something and have them harbouring weird theories about me while I work in their house.

Spidey66 · 06/11/2020 09:08

As long as she's not using your devices to download porn or whatever, I'm with the 'can't see the problem' brigade, and think she's just using a music streaming service on her phone or maybe checking her emails or something. You say her works ok so it's not like she's wasting time on line.

I dont have a cleaner but if i did I'd let her make herself a cuppa/use the loo/use the WiFi to listen to music on her phone. It's not costing you any more.

Halliehallie9828 · 06/11/2020 09:10

@JinglingHellsBells

What are you talking about ?

What’s app works everywhere.. on all smart phones that have it installed Confused as long as you have a internet connection.

Do you own a smartphone at all Hmm

Peppafrig · 06/11/2020 09:10

Yes the cleaner who has worked there for years and years. Waits for her two hours a week to conduct a criminal offence using the OPs WiFi. I mean she has to do all her work too so she has plenty of time for that . I mean she is cleaner she can’t possibly be trusted to not be a criminal . We must think the absolute worst of her even know she has proven trustworthy for years and gives the OP no reason to doubt her.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/11/2020 09:12

@Hangingover

Yes, do this. You definitely won't end up on the news.

Can I even see what someone else has downloaded onto their own device just because we share WIFI?
SleepingStandingUp · 06/11/2020 09:14

I also don't think she needs to be on your WiFi
Isn't she meant to be cleaning?
How DARE she listen to music. Surely the only sound she needs is the one of her scrubbing the toilet bowl by hand

Halliehallie9828 · 06/11/2020 09:14

@JinglingHellsBells

Well, I'm struggling to know why a cleaner would need to access the internet when she's cleaning Hmm

It makes no sense to me.

Is this so she can connect to wifi on her phone, or what?

I can't believe posters who think it's okay Confused

What is she doing that she needs the web?

If she does have access, does that also mean she can see all your browsing history?

Have you ever checked her browsing history to see what she's done?

Surely she has her own phone if she needs the internet while she's working?

Yes it’s so she can connect her phone to the WiFi. So she’s not using all her data up! She may have limited funds and have a small data package.

How is she going to see all of the OP browsing history when she’s only connecting her own phone! She’s not using the OP pc or phone Confused and no the OP can’t ask to look at her internet history for Christ sake.

hvnamechange2000 · 06/11/2020 09:15

Absolute non issue, give her the password

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 06/11/2020 09:24

@Nicknacky

HallieHallie9828 Your naivety is heartwarming.
Bless. Such innocence is refreshing.

Livelovebehappy · 06/11/2020 09:24

Maybe she listens to podcasts or other stuff whilst doing the cleaning. It’s really not costing you anything, although I can see she wouldn’t have know that, so you could potentially have been paying for her using it previously.

grisen · 06/11/2020 09:26

The PP who said her mate runs a cleaning business, well so does my family. And it’s naive to think that cleaners don’t listen to music during their work when they are most likely alone, you have it on in the background, you’re not constantly fiddling on your phone.

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 06/11/2020 09:27

She has no idea what our data package is.

She is employed by you to clean your house. She probably can take a pretty good guess at what your data package is.

Escapeplanning · 06/11/2020 09:29

She's probably a Russian bot farm and conducts her global democracy destabilising campaigns from OPs bathroom. I bet GCHQ are following OP on Instagram now to check out if she's stated any political opinions.

knittingaddict · 06/11/2020 09:29

If I was a cleaner I would listen to podcasts on headphones, in which case access to the wifi would be useful. It's what I do in my own home as I hate housework so much and it relieves the boredom.

Presumably podcasts on how to bring down the Government, how to make Trump our leader or how to import illegal immigrants. I mean cleaners don't listen to MUSIC or normal stuff like US

@Girlzroolz

I’m very interested in the fault-lines in this thread. I’m betting it’s a generational thing.

I’m 49 (for info) and I’m hitting up against these issues a bit at the moment with people from 10-25yo. As an example, my child’s singing teacher. She’s 19, and thought it perfectly reasonable to conduct her zoom lesson lying on her bed in her loungewear. I was quite Hmm when I walked past the screen. I checked around and it seems that this is comprehensively acceptable for young adults, and I’m the fuddy-duddy. My counter-argument is that since I’m the client (who pays handsomely), my norms for these things get a say. My norms aren’t wrong, just different. And sometimes my preferences are allowed a voice, even if different other age-groups prefer something different.

I’d be very Hmm about anyone working for me assuming I was fine with them accessing my passwords and data services without asking. And without offering a reason. I’d be ok with ‘Do you mind if I hook in to your Wifi to listen to music/podcasts while I iron’ but not ok with TV in the background of cleaning work paid by the hour or downloading stuff via my account. Nopety nope.

Call me old. I don’t care. My house, my money, my rules. At work we all dance to someone else’s tune, consider it one of those things.

I’d be saying (friendly tone) ‘We don’t hand out our passwords as a rule, can you tell me more about why you need it?’ and I’d base my answer on the response. At my house I do confidential online work, so I’d prolly use that as an excuse and say no.

thought it perfectly reasonable to conduct her zoom lesson lying on her bed in her loungewear

Wow, that is so unprofessional!!! My DDs would never do this, so it isnt just our age group I'm sure
