Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

Would people be as keen to give their password to a builder or decorator who was working in their home?

chunkyrun · 06/11/2020 07:13

You're either there to socialise or work, not be on your phone and if you needed a call, you'd use your own data etc.

^^ family and friends visit, we sit in comfortable silence scrolling through our phones sometimes

Yes, wouldn’t bother me.

Seriously op, this isn’t a issue. You are just being OTT.

I would of just took the WiFi password too and I do.

So you can’t listen to music while you work or reply back to a message if needed ? Hmm
Holdingtherope · 06/11/2020 07:17

Because she likely has no money and can't afford unlimited data. To be honest you trust her with keys to your house and alarm and not the WiFi - even though you don't think she is doing anything dodgy.

Some people on here are so over the top with security.

Impatientwino · 06/11/2020 07:17

A builder or a decorator is usually a one off visitor so that's a bit different to me. They wouldn't have my house key or my alarm code either!

Holdingtherope · 06/11/2020 07:20

Also those so into security don't you know that you can set restrictions

Iwonder08 · 06/11/2020 07:23

OP, please don't listen to the people telling you it is no issue/ott. People using your WiFi can download illegal content and your WiFi details will be visible to police, they can also have malware on their phone that can spread via your network. I am not even talking about your bandwidth usage.
If your cleaner came to you and asked you if she can please use your WiFi because she would very much like to listen to a radio or something else reasonable you might consider that, however using your WiFi without your explicit permission from my perspective is not acceptable

starfishmummy · 06/11/2020 07:24

Why on earth would she need it? If she wants music, leave her a radio!!

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 07:26

Impatientwino I’ve had a decorator in my house for nearly 3 weeks a couple of years ago.

I’ve executed search warrants at houses where the householders are probably much more cautious with their passwords....

user1493494961 · 06/11/2020 07:33

No, I wouldn't give her the password and for all those wittering on about unlimited data, it's primarily a security issue.

creaturcomforts · 06/11/2020 07:39

She should have asked! Even though most employers provide broadband I wouldn't go to work and expect to use the broadband if it was private, I'm not paying for it after all!

It wouldn't matter what job you do , you're right to be annoyed it's common courtesy to ask. As for her using it, it wouldn't bother me, but not asking and changing the password wtf?

Temporarything · 06/11/2020 07:41

Does she listen to music when cleaning OP? Seems that’s what people are suggesting. Or does she get a break and use that time on the internet?

My mate runs a cleaning business. She laughed when I asked her about this. Her cleaners don’t listen to music they are too busy. In, clean and out. She’s canit imagine why she would need it.

Yes, if they were in my house all the time and had worked for me for years and I trusted them with my keys and they did a great job. There is a lot of snobbery on this thread.
Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 07:49

Othering It’s not snobbery at all. I don’t think people understand about security

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 06/11/2020 07:56

No, we don’t tend to share our WiFi code bar close friends.

She is there to work so why would she need it anyway. Surly if you want music to listen to you download it and store it.

turnthebiglightoff · 06/11/2020 07:56

I see snobbery is alive and well. How dare your cleaner ask for WiFi access?!?!? Who does she think she is, she's only a cleaner!!

Hang your heads!!

AryaStarkWolf · 06/11/2020 08:00

Yes yabu ffs

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 06/11/2020 08:01

She doesn't need internet access, she's there to clean.

Odd that she asked.

TheSockMonster · 06/11/2020 08:03

Our cleaners have usually asked for the password to stream music whilst they work.

Some years back, one asked if she could download her software updates over our WiFi (no internet at home and a cap on mobile data).

I’ve never given it a second thought, but I do think it’s a courtesy to ask.

ScrapThatThen · 06/11/2020 08:11

I wouldn't give it a seconds hesitation.

ramblingsonthego · 06/11/2020 08:14

How dare your staff not know their place huh?

Just give her the password and stop being an idiot.

justicedanceson · 06/11/2020 08:19

Almost certainly she is using to stream music or podcasts- all quite normal things to do when you clean.

ScrapThatThen · 06/11/2020 08:20

I wonder how valued and trusted she is feeling having to wait for you to think about it. You will have to rebuild the relationship after this.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 06/11/2020 08:22

All those people saying let her have it - how would you feel if something illegal was downloaded? It would be on you.
