There’s a specific name, not Canin/portacabin. I’m having one of those brain-melt moments and now can’t relax until I remember it. I know this is not of the greatest importance!

Huts for me (London, 1980s)
Mobiles for DS (West Yorks, now)

Freshprincess · 28/10/2020 10:38

Terrapins for me. Even when they disappear over the summer and came back as a permanent building it was still called the terrapin.

I’ve never questioned why they were called that till this thread. So obvious it’s the company name.

Coveredincathair · 28/10/2020 10:40

Didn't have any at my school, but the "chicken sheds" Confused have fairly recently been demolished at my children's school.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2020 10:52

At my senior school all the 3 first year forms were in portacabins , known as ‘the huts’.

x2boys · 28/10/2020 10:52

Yes we had a ROSLA block too,@zaphodbeeble I did know it was an acronym for raising of the school leaving age as my history teacher covered it ,but I thought it was just what my school called it ,but apparently dh school also had a ROSLA block too ,so it must have been a national acronym ?

Smarties87 · 28/10/2020 10:54

Terrapins when I was in school (early 90's) but when I worked in a nursery recently they asked me to get something from the demountable...I was clueless! I'm in Wales

VampireBill · 28/10/2020 10:55

Pre-fabs at school in Yorkshire 1970/80's.

The Terrapin thing is a bit of a revelation - when the first person wrote it I thought it was a typo!

Heatherjayne1972 · 28/10/2020 10:58

Terrapins. But I never knew why

MadisonAvenue · 28/10/2020 11:00

Mobiles, although at my junior school in the 70s we had mobiles and Horsa huts (Hutting Operation for the Raising of the School-Leaving Age) which were from the 1940s.

Mrsjayy · 28/10/2020 11:02

Terrapin is the makers of them like portakabin

SnaggleBeast · 28/10/2020 11:04

We had one that was called 'the pavilion'.
