Do you have a pointless superpower?

GnomeDePlume · 27/09/2020 07:01

You know, that thing you can do which others cant but which is surprisingly useless.

Mine: I tie shoelaces upside down which is great if I am tying someone else's shoelaces but means my own are upside down (ie loose ends at the top of the knot). This was a useful skill when DCs were little but now they are in their 20s and dont need me tying their shoelaces.

DH: putting up coving - he can just see all the cuts he needs to make so there is almost no wastage. The house is perfectly coved. We dont redecorate often enough for him to use this skill.

Anyone else have a pointless superpower?

I can hear a song and know the lyrics v quickly so that when some song from way back comes on I sing a long word perfect, which amazes my family! I see others on here have the gift too! I was told it’s called having a singers ear, the ability to remember lyrics to loads of songs.
Also I have amazing patience I’ve been told and I think it’s true but it’s not a talent I can show off, or on stage to impress people, I would swap it for something to show off about.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/09/2020 18:13

I can quote the Direct Debit Guarantee perfectly. Its been over 10 years since I worked in an environment where this has been necessary.
I can also sing a Latin grace that I learned at school over 30 years ago, despite not studying Latin.

InMySpareTime · 27/09/2020 18:17

I can identify the denomination of coins dropped on hard floors.
When the new pound coin came in it took me a week or so to get my ear in, but I can even identify several coins dropped at once.

LeSquigh · 27/09/2020 18:17

I can do quite a few of these things - click my eardrums, know if something will fit in a gap and also but clothes by site for my family without them having to try something in (I can’t do it for myself so well though), remember numbers, read upside down, write in mirror and also with my non dominant hand so when I broke my arm I could write perfectly well. To be honest I didn’t think many of them were unusual and presumed everyone could do them!

Amazingly jealous of the coving power. I’ve only tried to do it once and it was so hard! I had thought I would be able to see it & I just couldn’t at all.
Emmmie · 27/09/2020 18:21

I can predict significant changes in weather thanks to my awful migraines.

GnomeDePlume · 27/09/2020 18:32

I am very envious of people who can work out what size things are without measuring. Definitely not in my skillset. On the other hand I do keep the house well stocked with tape measures.

On that front, has anyone else noticed that tape measures cluster together? We start a DIY project and I stock up on tape measures, carefully placing them around the house so that there is one to hand. Within half a day they have all clustered together. Is it some sort of shoaling instinct?

I can make a buzzing sound in my ears at will. Absolutely no use at all ☺️
I am very good at packing the boot of the car to fit the most stuff in and best use the space.

AstiniMartini · 27/09/2020 18:40

@Devlesko

I'm psychic, my family know as they experience it. I don't tell anyone irl though, as they disbelieve or think you are weird/crazy.
I can see auras. All the women on my dad's side of the family can. I never tell anyone either because people just go Hmm

It never occurred to me others do not see them until i was an adult. I have to tune my eyes in- go slightly out of focus then i can see them clearly. Only ever see pale gold colirus though- not other coplours except for one standout occasion i saw someone with a black aura and it made me feel shaky and sick.

30daysoflight · 27/09/2020 18:40

Me and dsis have amazing hearing, know exactly what people are doing in the house.

Read freakishly fast to the point it spoils books and people accuse you of lying that you have actually read the memo or update.

When I worked in a bank could remember around 200 regular customers' account numbers.

Doing o level exams could visualise the actual pages in my books with the correct answer/materials.

On the other hand forget faces all the time unless they are in the place I know them from.

weegiemum · 27/09/2020 19:18

I know a song or a poem about almost anything. Not much help in an emergency, but I am entertaining!

Thecrisplover · 27/09/2020 19:24

It appears that my power is estimating. Yesterday I won a 'guess the number of sprinkles on colin the caterpillars back' competition. I won a tub of chocs. I've guessed the number of sweets in the jar before too. Very useful skill.

pinkbalconyrailing · 27/09/2020 19:27

I always get pulled over for extra vehicle checks at eurotunnel or ferry ports.
and get extra long chats at passport controls.
I have a very common name, there must be someone with an international arrest warrant with same name and birthdate.

WanderingMilly · 27/09/2020 19:33

I have hyper mobility in some of my joints...I can lie my hands flat against my arms, and lie in bed on my back with the soles of my feet flat on the bed without bending my knees. Can also bend down and touch the floor with my palms keeping my legs totally straight.
No-one cares though!!

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 27/09/2020 20:13

@Si1ver

I know all the lyrics to all the songs ever.

Can't sing though.

Me too! But I can carry a reasonable tune until I'm drunk. Then I sound like a female cat in heat Grin
Kerberos · 27/09/2020 20:26

I can play any tune on the recorder pretty much straight off. Only realised it was a thing after picking the thing up after 20 years of not playing. Drives my musical kids mad. Can't read music all that well, just give me the starting note and I'll figure out the sharps and flats as I go. Thought everyone could do it but apparently not.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 27/09/2020 20:42

oooh I remembered another, I know if people have been to the house when i have been out , dd often pops by to get something and I know...sometimes it's the trail of destruction that is evidence but mostly I just know, it freaks people (ds2 and dh) out when I ask when was dd (or AN Other) here?

Also if I close a door I can tell if the cat is hiding in the room somewhere.

Graffitiqueen · 27/09/2020 20:47

Mine's not pointless but it is fairly niche. My superpower is finding tables for 11 in a busy ski resort.

My friends were amazed every lunchtime.

GnomeDePlume · 27/09/2020 20:53

@Graffitiqueen that is very niche. Does this superpower only apply to finding tables for 11. Not other numbers?

I can maintain eye contact with someone while writing (and even read what I have written afterwards).

rslsys · 27/09/2020 21:24

Printer in a former life so I can read anything that is upside down and backwards.
Skill that has appeared later in life is the ability to convert 1 pint of beer to 4 pints of urine . . .

NaughtipussMaximus · 27/09/2020 21:27

I can read upside down and back to front. I’m great as estimating the size of things - I’m excellent at packing anything into anything else, fitting things into small spaces etc.

HeidiHoNeighbour · 27/09/2020 21:32

I have several.
I can park in the smallest of spaces just an inch of two longer than my car.
I can do sums in my head really quickly, I add my supermarket shop up as I do it and am always right. Can always do countdown too (tip: had dartboard for kids to play and we all raced to win at 301. Makes you very fast and good)
If I have to get up at a certain time, I say it out loud three times and always wake up at that time!
Maybe I’m just weird....

Graffitiqueen · 27/09/2020 22:09

@gnomedeplume I reckon I could stretch to 12, but anything beyond that would just be too much for anyone.
