Is my thumb weird?

If I give someone a thumbs up with my left hand, this is what it looks like... I tend to use the other hand because DP says it's weird. Confused

Do your thumbs do this? Is my thumb weird or is DP weird? Grin

I have thumbs like that. I also have extremely mobile fingers and swans neck deformity as i have hypermobility syndrome.

Shaniac · 18/09/2020 23:24

But to answer your question yes its weird Grin

mamakoukla · 18/09/2020 23:25

Fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees, ankles, shoulders.... and I can still do the splits without any effort. But seriously, am looking into gaining some muscle to help protect my joints more as they age

Shaniac · 18/09/2020 23:27

I have found my weird fingered people! Everyone has always told me how freaky my hands are. My toes as well. All my joints are fucked but ironically my legs wont bend they are like ironing boards. My top half is over the top flexible and my hands have been able to grasp onto things normal fingered people cant do haha

Badgerstmary · 18/09/2020 23:57

You look normal to me. People think my elbows are Odd as when I straighten them, they’re not straight.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/09/2020 07:39

I can do the funny bending the top joint of your fingers too. My fingers can bend backwards (though not as far now as I am over 50). It made gripping a pen and pressing buttons a nuisance.

YouLando · 19/09/2020 09:41

Both of my thumbs are like this too. Looks normal to me, but then I've had them for 50 years! People do comment on them sometimes. I also have slightly conjoined middle toes.

Dilbertian · 19/09/2020 11:09

Well if you're weird, so am I.

And my mum is even weirder, as both her thumbs bend far further back than our left thumbs.

@ChazsBrilliantAttituderilliant. The bend at the top of the finger is called a swans neck deformity. Yep very handy for gripping pens. (pun intended)

EyeDrops · 19/09/2020 14:37

Ahhh I can also do the top finger joint thing. And the middle joint kind of 'locks'. I tried learning the violin when I was younger, it was a nightmare because my index finger would lock like that holding the bow and it was SO uncomfortable. It makes cutlery difficult for me too.

I do worry that I'll lose all strength in my fingers as I get older and they'll end up like jelly...

pussycatinboots · 19/09/2020 14:45

OMG Some of these thumbs are going to give me nightmares - that's not normal, surely??
Doesn't it hurt to bend them backwards like that?

Cockadoodledooo · 19/09/2020 16:04

Both mine do. I had no idea it wasn't considered normal.

Anordinarymum · 19/09/2020 16:07

Stop it. I can't stand it :(

mediumperiperi · 19/09/2020 16:19

Mine does that too. I assume it's because I'm hyper mobile?

december2020 · 19/09/2020 16:25

Yesss! My people!
I got them flexi fingers (and thumbs) too.

Small tip:
Huge advantage when playing thumb war! If you ever need a game to settle something.

SpottyCoffeeCup · 19/09/2020 17:06

Both my thumbs do that too! Glad to see there's so many of us Grin

Elieza · 19/09/2020 17:25

If I recall correctly from palm reading the thumbs that bend backwards are on the hand of those who have skills that would make them good as the centre of attention, perhaps public speakers, comedians, musicians etc.
Someone in a stage or out in front of people.

The left hand is what you are born with and the right hand is what you make of yourself.

So in theory someone who has a bent back left thumb and a straight right thumb has talents and could have been one of the above type people but chose not to do so and pursue things out of the limelight instead.

If bent right thumb and straight left thumb they weren’t born with the skills to be the above type of people but they have pushed themselves to do it and have worked hard and are now doing it.

Two bent thumbs - you have the talents to be up in front in the limelight and have pursued those talents.

Could be a load of bollocks right enough, but when you are watching tv tonight look at the actors thumbs and you will see a lot of then have two bent thumbs!

Haha, no it doesn't hurt at all... Even pushing it down doesn't hurt, like this... Excuse the walls, they were like that when we moved in!

Aha, guess I'll use my straighter right thumb as an excuse then! Grin

@FrangipaniBlue

Are fingers not supposed to bend back slightly when you stretch your hand out straight!? Shock

I love being on stage and did a lot of acting until I had dc!

loutypips · 19/09/2020 18:47

That's like mine!

AmyandPhilipfan · 19/09/2020 18:49

My thumbs do that. My violin teacher blamed them on me being crap at violin aged 10 as it meant I didn’t naturally hold the bow the right way. I probably was just a bit crap at violin in general though!

utterlynutty · 19/09/2020 18:54

Bendy thumbs run in our family.
My mum, uncle, brother, daughter and nephew can do this with their thumbs on both hands.

CulturallyAppropriatedName · 19/09/2020 19:00

Mine also bend like that. I am otherwise completely rigid and am sure I am not hypermobile. Can't do the splits or any kind of gymnastics or anything.

ManiPediNow · 19/09/2020 19:07

Seems to me from this thread, more can than can't. Mine:
