What has happened to all the tinned sweetcorn

There was absolutely none of any brand earlier this week in tesco. I thought nothing of it but have just been to sainsburys in a different town and none there either. Both seemed to have plenty of fresh sweetcorn.
So is it Brexit, covid, zombies or what?

I couldnt get any for weeks. A friend kindly got some from Costco after a fascinating evening of me moaning about it. I'm probably ok for sweetcorn for the next year or so.

middleager · 05/09/2020 14:26

I noticed this too! Had to huy frozen instead.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/09/2020 14:29

It's coming into season so may be short from last year's harvest if demand was up in the spring. I bought a pack in Costco in April, so we're sorted for the next year.

(Lasted from Feb to May on my bogroll supplies too, only bought it once since March long after it came back into the supermarkets)

LunaLoveFood · 05/09/2020 14:32

I did try but only 2 turned up!

DameMargaretofChalfont · 05/09/2020 14:34

I'm desperately hunting for Soy Sauce (full fat version not "light" Grin ), Worcestershire Sauce and Kellogs Bran Flakes.

All are like unicorn poo in East Yorkshire!!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 05/09/2020 14:35

I haven't been able to get it in my online shop since early June. I always order 3 tins a week. I have had to go to the shop to physically buy it - which is weird as although the stocks/range is small, we have always been able to pick a few tins up. So I don't understand what the feck asda online are playing at?!

DP is currently out at the shop now for my tins of sweetcorn, and the other items asda failed on 👍😬.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 05/09/2020 14:37

@DameMargaretofChalfont that's another that asda fail us on too! Luckily a bottle lasts us a while, but if I need some - pointless even trying in my onlin3 food shop!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 05/09/2020 14:37

Soy sauce that is!

Oblomov20 · 05/09/2020 14:39

I noticed this, this week. No green giant anywhere. How odd.

maggienolia · 05/09/2020 14:42

Tinned is on offer 4 for two pound in our local Tesco (Cambridgeshire).
Can't take advantage though, it goes straight through me (TMI)

ohffs66 · 05/09/2020 14:43

I got some in home bargains last week, plenty there!

Manolin · 05/09/2020 14:50

@MrsMoastyToasty

Plenty of sweetcorn plants in the fields and near us waiting to be harvested.
I think you will find the majority of those will be going for bio-digestion to make electricity.
AnneLovesGilbert · 05/09/2020 14:53

I bought it all. Sorry. DD has at least a tin a day. She’s obsessed.

BalloonSlayer · 05/09/2020 14:53

There was a big product recall of sweetcorn about 2 months ago due to something or other. Contamination? Can't remember. But I expect that explains some of it.

I only like the tinned "original" stuff. I don't like frozen and the no salt/no sugar version tastes like frozen as well. Mind you the last time I had to have the no salt/sugar one I added a wee bit of salt and sugar to the saucepan and it tasted right.

Pipandmum · 05/09/2020 14:56

I know! My son eats it every day. I would have thought shortages would have been sorted especially as it is now corn season! Sometimes it is only the supermarket own brand, sometimes not even that. I have gone to two pr three major supermarkets and found none, off and on since lock down. Got a few tins at one point from corner shop marked down as nearing sell by date. It is a mystery.

Mum? I didn't know you were on here

The devil has taken all his sweetcorn back, hopefully he will return for all the celery and parsnips soon

Woodendollymix · 05/09/2020 15:07

Plenty and always has been in Aldi and lidl (buy home brand for hens)

Have you tried frozen? Just as good and a lot cheaper

Grapesoda7 · 05/09/2020 15:09

I think Green Giant had to recall a batch due to contamination.

My kids only like the red label Green Giant tin.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/09/2020 15:10

Green giant is vastly superior to any other sweet corn which tastes flavourless and sort of flabby. Green giant is so crisp and so sweet.

Tesco has been out of stock with it for bloody months and keeps sending their crappy own brand shit instead. Imagine my delight at going in in person to find actual green giant on the shelves. Came home with 12 cans and husband thought I was prepping for an apocalypse.

WokeEwok · 05/09/2020 15:10

@ DameMargaretofChalfont yes came on here to say this. Worcester sauce nowhere to be seen.

TheDogsMother · 05/09/2020 15:17

Do not get Sainsbury's new own brand Hubbards sweet corn. It's incredibly tough and just really unpleasant . It's nothing like their previous own brand or Green Giant.

Slingsanderrors · 05/09/2020 15:19

I’m in Lincolnshire, no tinned sweet corn in local coops and spar, none in big Sainsbury’s or Waitrose.

CarolVordermansArse · 05/09/2020 15:23

@chocolatepudandchocolatesauce

What about all the chocolate Penguins? I've looked in four shops and can't find any!!! Not an issue, I was just intregued after the first two shops so now look wherever I go Grin
Penguins were on offer a couple of weeks ago in our Morrisons, stacks and stacks of them on one of the end of aisles and around the corner, an entire display of Penguins and nothing else. Shame they taste of crap now, at least this lot do, seem to have changed them recently.
frustrationcentral · 05/09/2020 15:25

I think some was recalled
