That strange time of the year twixt summer and fall...

I know it's still August, but it might as well be October, the heating is on and I'm drinking spiced hot chocolate.
Does anyone else feel like the seasons have shifted? Spring was so warm and dry, and now we're at the tail end of summer and it's colder than it should be. (I don't actually mind though, I hate hot weather.)
Also I'm looking forward to autumn, and it's just over two months to Halloween. Yay! Grin

I always look forward to autumn

GreyGardens88 · 30/08/2020 20:38

Yes I woke up this morning and there was a definite crispyness and chill in the air despite the sun being out. Made me feel refreshed and invigorated, been in a good mood all day

I love this time of year, on the cusp been summer and autumn. I almost feel like we need an extra word for it.

MarshaBradyo · 30/08/2020 20:41

Was it last year that it was so mild the roses kept blooming for ages? Or maybe year before. It was so surreal.

I love this time of year just before autumn and school starting. Feels calm

HoratiotheHorsefly · 30/08/2020 20:48

This is my favourite time of year, the light falls differently, there's a certain chill in the air and things smell ever so slightly different.

It's just a magical time when the seasons start to change.

Laiste · 30/08/2020 21:10

Yes, i went out to put the bins out just now and came in and said to DH ''it's proper cold out there''. When you breathe in it's proper cold air.

Beautiful sunset tonight.

Michaelbaubles · 30/08/2020 21:13

The second half of August hasn’t been proper summer for a few years. The best part of summer seems to come in May/June now. It was hotter and sunnier at the start of lockdown than it is now. However, it often seems to perk up around the start of October and be warm for a few weeks, so we might still have nice days this year.

Deelish75 · 30/08/2020 21:23

I’m noticing the trees on my road changing. The leaves look like they’re drying out, starting to shrivel and change colour. There seems to be a slightly different smell in the air.

I’m in the South East and I’ve noticed it’s feeling colder, we’ve had the heating on for bath time. The forecast is for it to get warmer towards the end of this week and into next - seems like summer is still hanging in there.

SapphireSeptember · 30/08/2020 21:25

@Michaelbaubles

I agree with that, August 2014 was really cold, and then Halloween that year it was 30C! I was walking home after it was dark and it felt like summer.

Ooh, I'm feeling all excited, and I don't know why. (Although this year has felt like a total write-off and I'm done with it now.)

Back into the 20s by middle of the week in some areas, don’t put your summer clothes away yet!

Crunchymum · 30/08/2020 21:38

I remember a few years ago being in a big London park and "feeling" a change in the air. Wasn't so much a temperature drop or anything particularly tangible but both DP and I sensed a shift in the season. Not felt anything as poignant or noticeable since....nor had I ever noticed it before.

Can't recall ever having a 30c Halloween??? But we did have 30c on 1st October 2011. I have the pics of me supping prosecco in the garden to prove it Grin

We go away tomorrow (few days at the seaside before the kids go back) so of course it's bloody freezing Shock

LuluJakey1 · 30/08/2020 21:39

Autumn is definitely in the air. Our plums have been picked, our apples are almost ready and I saw trees like this last week.

I love Autumn. I like the change in seasons generally, but particularly Autumn arriving.

GameSetMatch · 30/08/2020 21:42

Yes, it’s really chilly I had to put a coat on at the playground this evening! I love the sun and really hot days I’m dreading the ‘turn’.

missmouse101 · 30/08/2020 21:42

Heating on? You need warmer clothes OP, that's crazy.

GameSetMatch · 30/08/2020 21:44

@missmouse101 it’s only 9 degrees here! We have the fire on too OP!

Yay! The first sighting of 'put a jumper on'

I'll get MN autumn bingo dobber ready.

Indecisivelurcher · 30/08/2020 21:51

I agree it's defo autumn! I wanted to make jam this year, connected loads of jars, then missed all the fruit! Blackberries are all over. Need to go scrumping see what I can find...

FlightOfTheCat · 30/08/2020 22:00

@SapphireSeptember - I’m only here to say I’m glad that someone else remembers how warm it was on Halloween 2014! I know it’s easy enough to look up online but none of my friends seem to remember that we were out in silly costumes and not cold at all!

june2007 · 30/08/2020 22:03

Love early autumn. But still summer, still wearing my summer frock , no coat needed today. No heating either as wearing sleavless dress.

SapphireSeptember · 30/08/2020 22:07

I don't own any jumpers, although I have a few plaid shirts. (The reason being as soon as I start walking, even in the depths of winter, I get too hot!)

Anyway, it's going to 8C tonight, so the heating is going on. (And I shall be snuggled warm in my bed.)

@Crunchymum Wow, that sounds amazing! Shock I remember that Halloween because I spent all day outside, it was glorious! And it did feel very weird walking home with all the kids out trick or treating while it felt so warm and summery!

@GameSetMatch I'd love a fire! That's part of my dream tiny house design. Smile

I can't remember the exact date but recall visiting Cardiff in October 2014 and it being warm enough to go outside without a jacket. That said I'm from Edinburgh which is almost always cold.

DCIHoops · 30/08/2020 22:10

I’ve been leaving out food and water for hedgehogs and have ordered a hedgehog house from British Hedgehog Preservation Socety - looking forward to seeing if a hedgehog moves in 🦔

@SapphireSeptember - please tell me more about spiced hot chocolate!

SapphireSeptember · 31/08/2020 00:50

@DCIHoops
I use Green & Black's hot chocolate and add spices to it. I have several jars, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, nutmeg, and one of mixed spice. I like to mix and match different things and I had one with nutmeg and cloves and it was lovely. Smile I know Hotel Chocolat do some interesting flavours, but I haven't tried those yet (except for when I've been in their cafes.)

Also, thank you for looking after the hedgehogs. ❤
