That strange time of the year twixt summer and fall...

I know it's still August, but it might as well be October, the heating is on and I'm drinking spiced hot chocolate.
Does anyone else feel like the seasons have shifted? Spring was so warm and dry, and now we're at the tail end of summer and it's colder than it should be. (I don't actually mind though, I hate hot weather.)
Also I'm looking forward to autumn, and it's just over two months to Halloween. Yay! Grin

I always feel really unsettled at this time of year. You can tell that the seasons are on the turn - more so than at any other time of the year - and it feels like the passing of yet another year. I do actually prefer autumn and winter to spring and summer though, it's just the first few weeks that I struggle with.

nosswith · 31/08/2020 08:16

Just looked at the weather forecast. Children here return to school on Thursday, temperature 5C higher.

I like September and often you get good weather.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2020 09:49

I wouldn’t feel we’re properly into autumn yet - despite having the heating on over the weekend, and temp outside kitchen window only 14 a little while ago, in SW London.

September can be very warm and summery - I for one won’t be putting away any summer clothes just yet.

Also recall visiting a NT place right at the end of October - temp was 21 or 22, very warm and sunny.
More than once I’ve noticed a warm and glorious October 31st - followed by a thoroughly dismal and wintry 1st November.

Sloth66 · 31/08/2020 10:10

For me, there’s a change in the light. Softer and of course gets dark earlier. Autumn is my favourite time of year, plus the build up to Christmas with Halloween and bonfire night.

EdwardsNewJumper · 31/08/2020 10:20

@FlightOfTheCat and @SapphireSeptember I also remember the Hallowen of 2014. We were away for a half term break, on the Saturday, 1st November, the dcs were paddling in the sea on the south coast. It was fantastic. Have photos off them stripped of to knickers and vest, looking like middle of summer. It was gorgeous.

EdwardsNewJumper · 31/08/2020 10:21

Off...stupid typo...

Mrsemcgregor · 31/08/2020 14:03

Autumn does seem to start in August now BUT on the other hand.... I remember bonfire night always used to be properly cold, needed hats and gloves and a hot mug of soup to stand outside watching fireworks. The last few years I’ve been baking hot in my winter woolies!!!

ohtheholidays · 31/08/2020 15:31

Yes,another one that loves this time of year.

I had to stick an autumn dress on yesterday and my lovely long red joe browns boots

I can't wait for Halloween and Christmas, like many others I'm looking forward to this year ending.

Thisismytimetoshine · 31/08/2020 15:34

Does anyone else feel like the seasons have shifted?. In the wrong direction, IMO... I really miss the crisp frosty days we used to have years ago, it was my absolute favourite type of weather.
I didn't even wear a coat last winter 🙁

Elieza · 31/08/2020 15:40

It feels like tomorrow should be the 1st of October not just September! It’s like we’re are a month out. The seasons have moved.

I’m due to rip up bedding plants and cut back bushes next month but I think I will get it done before then!

TabbyM · 31/08/2020 15:43

I don't mind the cooler temperatures, but the darkening evenings make me twitchy and anxious.

Late spring early summer when the hawthorn is in bloom and all the birds are singing is my favourite time. Being a Scottish person August means schools are already back, birds are silent and the swifts of high summer are long gone...

...must get the SAD light out asap!!!

ListenLinda · 31/08/2020 15:45

This time of year always brings a certain feeling for me, I don’t know if I can describe it or have the word for it.

But it is always about new beginnings, looking back but a definate change and a reminder of school times and getting ready and organised for the new school/academic year. The air smells different, the sky looks different. It is the only time I believe you can really see/sense the change in seasons.
I love the period from early September all the way up to Christmas. My birthday is late September and we usually have the last few days of Sunshine and then the jumpers come back out.

ClashCityRocker · 31/08/2020 15:46

We usually go away self catering the week schools go back.

For me the weather is usually the best of both worlds - warm enough to spend time sat out without hugely layering up, and just about cold enough and dark early enough for cozy evenings in front of the logburner.

But yes, the air definitely has a different quality. I do love this time of year.

It's funny, autumn seems to come almost overnight whereas spring always takes so long to appear.

BlackberrySky · 31/08/2020 15:53

September starts in a few hours - hooray! It's my favourite month. Just the right amount of daylight, still light in the evenings, don't need a coat yet but pleasantly refreshing air. I have just packed away the summer fans and got out my long sleeved Pjs. Love it!

BarefootHippieChick · 31/08/2020 15:56

I definitely remember that warm Halloween! Dc and I went to a party and it seemed so strange walking home in the dark with no coats on! The only other time I remember such a warm October is when I've been abroad!

I find the end of August is always quite cold and damp and the heating goes on, and as soon as the kids are back at school we have a couple of weeks of ridiculously warm weather where I'm getting my shorts back out again.

iklboo · 31/08/2020 15:58

I love autumn. The light, the smells, cooler nights. I find it quite spiritual as nature starts getting ready to sleep again.

Autumn is my favourite too , i agree that there seems to have been a slight shift in the seasons and now late August seems like the onset of Autumn .
I love the stillness in the air , the light , the temperature and the promise of whats to come .

KatherineofTarragon · 31/08/2020 16:41

I love this time of year. Have dressed all the beds in fluffy teddy bear bedding, the heating has been on, , i picked up my first tin of quality street today for the xmas cupboard... ...and i am ironing sch uniforms. Oh what bliss!

Holothane · 31/08/2020 16:46

So much better I love this time of year cosy nights don’t like being dark at five pm though but cosy pays and throws love it.being able to snuggle 8nder duvet without cooking it’s a summer one still, dh like extra blanket at this time winter duvets go on in end of October. Christmas shopping and saving.

Thisismytimetoshine · 31/08/2020 16:50

Teddy bear bedding... Do I need this? 🤔

Spudlet · 31/08/2020 16:53

We had our first fire a few days ago! We had a new wood burner fitted in June, so the first use was a proper occasion. We had the old one down to a fine art, this one will take a bit of getting used to.

I baked a fruitcake today - always something that I do more in autumn and winter. Spring and summer I’m all about brownies, but as the weather gets a little cooler I feel the need for fruitcake. I don’t know why.

It’s warmer today but yesterday was cool enough that when I went for a run, I kept my long sleeve top on almost the whole time. It was a new route so I was stopping quite often to check the map, and I was glad of those sleeves in the wind! I’ll be in leggings again before you know it at this rate.

lachy · 31/08/2020 16:55

I love Autumn, I love the coziness it brings, and the fact that once the schools go back, we march towards winter.

Summer is my least favourite season, followed by winter, but Autumn and Spring make me very happy.

KatherineofTarragon · 31/08/2020 17:02

@Thisismytimetoshine yes! I ordered from Dunelm in the summer. We all have it, DC's have it , one in cream and the other in biscuit. I have it in pale pink. The furry flat sheet is divine. The pillow cases, marshmallow and the duvet cover like a cloud!

Best nights sleep i have had in years... ( i am at that age)...

You need teddy bear bedding in your life!
