Alternative to this 80's toy

Does anyone remember the Secret Keeper toys from the 80's/90's? They were an array of plastic animals that you could keep your treasures in, and had a key, little accessories, and a little friend that lived inside. When I was little I had the pink snail, and it was the most magical toy to me.

I loved it so much and I think my daughter would love it too.

Unfortunately it's not one of the toys my parents kept to pass on.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar kind of toy currently on the market?

Thanks

Yes Popples! Forgot about those. I had one too!!
Just had to google sweet secrets , I had one! They were brilliant!
I'm probably strange, but I love to smell the old toys I have and the smell of the plastic/rubber takes me straight back to being a little girl 😂

Oldbagface · 19/08/2020 19:50

My little sisters had these. The little gonk that came with them was glow in the dark.

They don't make toys like that anymore 😔

LonginesPrime · 19/08/2020 20:03

I used to have Princess, the swan!

I had a toucan sweet secret that for some reason I hounded my DM for ages for (not reason sure why when I look back now, but it was apparently the most amazing thing in the world at the time!).

Does anyone remember Fairy Tails? They were plastic birds with long hair tails you could brush. They seemed revolutionary at the time as you could open and close their feet so they could sit on their perch or your finger! God, we were easily pleased back then...

Puffalumps scared me - I think the combination of the texture and the odd feel of the stuffing threw me off.

It's the same reason I didn't trust avocados as a kid - their weight was unexpected (Puffalumps being not dense enough and avocados too dense) relative to the way they look.

Wow, people always thought I was really odd for saying I didn't trust avocados, like they were somehow deceptive - Puffalumps have just educated me as to why!!

Trumpton · 20/08/2020 00:36

@LonginesPrime
Sorry !

I love avocados and Puffalumps sorry if I scared you Grin

LonginesPrime · 20/08/2020 00:52

@Trumpton that's ok - avocados I'm fine with now.

Although I can't say I've encountered a Puffalump in my adult life so who knows how I'd feel about them now? (something tells me I'd rather not find out though...)

tessiegirl · 20/08/2020 01:14

Oh my goodness! This thread is amazing!
I had the snail keypar.
I also had a puffalump, sweet secret baby doll and fairy tails! I had completely forgotten these until now!
I managed to get my dd a popple in tkmaxx last year.
Does anyone remember wuzzles?

Waffle12 · 20/08/2020 07:29

We had wuzzles too @tessiegirl

And omg popples! I rememberd those- just couldn't remember for the life of me what they were called!!! So they still make them? Are they the same as we remember them though?

And yes @Trumpton puffalumps! I can remember the strange silky feel of them.

Wow- starting to realise how many cool toys my parents got rid of 😪

They definately dont make toys like they used to.

Although, do u think our kids will think the same about their toys in 30 years time??
Am I gonna have to keep EVERYTHING just in case?😱

I was going to say Wuzzles too!

I had the plastic figures but my DB had a soft toy BumbleLion.

(I say 'soft toy' only because that's what we called plushies then and it seems almost sacrilegious to refer to an 80s soft toy as a plushie - obviously I'm not expecting anyone to have had a non-toy BubmleLion...although if any of the Wuzzles had been real, I'd definitely hope for BumbleLion.)

Great thread.

These might be more 70s than 80s
but I had a few of these peanut shell dolls. Such a simple toy but I adored them.

Oh I remember my sister having that keypers snail.
I've now got the bloomin song from the keypers advert in my head (Yes there was an advert and a song)
"Keypers keypers, what's inside those keypers? " Confused

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/08/2020 10:41

And weren’t original Polly Pockets much better than the revamped ones? Which I guess were a safety nightmare...but so cute.

Marylou62 · 20/08/2020 10:47

I'm not an 80s child more 60s/70s!! but does anyone remember a ring shaped like a jewel that was clear and had a tiny doll inside? I gave mine to my cousin (and regretted it!)

ShSpecialFriends · 20/08/2020 10:49

Ooh, and Smooshees! I loved Smooshees, the way they squeezed into their homes... I had a raccoon who went into a tree stump.

Marylou62 · 20/08/2020 10:50

Out of curiosity I just typed vintage doll in ring on Ebay..There it was!!!£54!!

tessiegirl · 20/08/2020 20:03

Yeah the popples was exactly the same...I'll try and find it in dd's toybox and will post a pic Grin

AveAtqueVale · 20/08/2020 20:17

I never had these but googled because they sounded GREAT. Apparently Shopkins do some similar things now, like this.

Cam2020 · 20/08/2020 20:22

I had the pink snail Keyper - I loved it! All my toys, are gone though, sadly. I remembered a doll I loved from the My Child range in the mid 80s the other day (inspired by the Sylvanian families thread) and it looked it up on ebay - they go for upwards of £100 now!

Waffle12 · 20/08/2020 21:49

Thank you @AveAtqueVale

I'll take a look at Shopkins

Ah Keypers! DD has my ladybird, although the swan went AWOL but I know I had it because when mum got them out of the loft the pink comb that came with the swan was there. Also 2 classic my little ponies (only 1 in the photo as the other is in DDs room and I'm not venturing there while she's alseep!)

Yes! I loved those! I had a hair salon for mine, I remember and quite a collection although the only names I remember are Twilight Tails and Tiffany Tails!

Whengodwasarabbit · 21/08/2020 09:03

Oh my gosh I remember all of these. I had the snail keyper and my friend had the swan. One day we swapped and then she wanted to swap back a week later. I refused so her mum came to our house ranting and my mum made me swap back 😂
The toys were such good quality back then and had gorgeous packaging and always included a little booklet of others in the range which you could buy. I also loved flower fairies and the barbie heart family collection.
