Alternative to this 80's toy

Does anyone remember the Secret Keeper toys from the 80's/90's? They were an array of plastic animals that you could keep your treasures in, and had a key, little accessories, and a little friend that lived inside. When I was little I had the pink snail, and it was the most magical toy to me.

I loved it so much and I think my daughter would love it too.

Unfortunately it's not one of the toys my parents kept to pass on.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar kind of toy currently on the market?

Thanks

I remember Fairy Tails, loved those. My sister and I had Sheldon the turtle and Princess the Swan Keypers. I also loved Pound Purries, had a grey long haired one with blue eyes, called Sapphire

Does anyone remember these? I loved them. They were a bit like super girly transformers 😄

@MummBraTheEverLeaking

Here is a photo of my stash currently being used dgc .

We won’t mention the complete Sylvanian world !
But a tip...use a bookcase wallpapered out with wooden papered floors as a dolls house . Sturdy and open . I fitted battery lights to each level .

the swan went AWOL but I know I had it because when mum got them out of the loft the pink comb that came with the swan was there

Well Tango looks pretty well-fed for someone who's been surviving for years captive in a dark box so I think we can all safely assume what went on during their ordeal in The Loft.

Im not judging as it was obviously a case of survival, but her little Finder is clearly suffering PTSD - the poor thing can't even make eye contact.

I had a cupcake doll that I can't remember the name of. Didn't have many toys but I loved that one. You could turn the doll inside out and she became a cupcake and her hat was the top. Also had an amazing smell!

Although it's probably an early 90's toy

Here it is!

As an aside MummBra, I've always found it interesting that Peachy's mane always remains in good condition.

I think it's the combination of the angle of her head (as the MLPs with higher heads have manes in a straight line so it's easier to interfere with) and the fact her legs are so close together that she's harder to actually play with. All she can really do is stand there.

She's the epitome of "just stand there and look pretty".

Not her fault, of course and I'm sure it wasn't intentional on the part of the designers (it would have been about coming up with a different standing position and the coquettish head angle would have been about centre of gravity so she doesn't faceplant). Still, I find it interesting that the result was this demure pony who doesn't get stuck into the action and maintains her prettiness.

I didn't even choose Peachy as a kid as she didn't look like she could do much - my brother did. I think I did pick up this unhelpful message that femininity and action are mutually exclusive from MLP - it took me decades to shake that mindset!

And don't get me wrong- I do love MLP. They were an important part of my childhood (n case that isn't obvious to anyone!) and the movie especially shaped my worldview greatly.

@TweetUsOnFacebook

Great thread.

These might be more 70s than 80s
but I had a few of these peanut shell dolls. Such a simple toy but I adored them.

These! Were they like Little beanbag dolls? I think I had a couple & can remember the feel of them, but have never been able to find them. I think mine lived in a matchbox.loved it. I think I always confused them with beanie babies, but they’re not. Wow.

I remember most of the other toys, but never had any I don’t think. My best friend had a glo worm and a Keyper and a pound puppy.
Also those hedgehog pencil holders. I only had a big one. To be cool, you needed the little one too.

LonginesPrime Grin

Peachy came with the stable, which was also in the loft but even after a bloody good scrub was so discoloured it was beyond saving.

Noooooo! That sucks.

Was that the blue stable that looked like it had Venetian blinds and it opened out to be a little catwalk thing? We had that - there were little plastic hats with ear holes!

HelpMeh · 23/08/2020 09:28

@disappointingdessert I had a cupcake doll! She smelt amazing.

I also had a great collection of Polly Pockets and Trolls. My mum got rid of everything. I'm still cross about it now Angry

My favourite toy was Lights Alive. I was very sad the day ours broke.

LonginesPrime · 23/08/2020 09:33

My fave MLP was Windwhistler - as an adult, I can see now it was because she had strong traits of neurodivergence that I recognised in myself, but at the time I just felt she was so sensible (and always right) while the others were so silly for no apparent reason. Grin

Love the peanut shell doll!

I loved Lights Alive! I literally spent hours making patterns with those little shapes.

Those tiny lights were so satisfying to push!

I had the snail keyper but I really wanted the swan. I did have those shoes with the picture of the key in the heel though. I insisted on the white ones like the princess in the advert.

OP if you still want one, there's a snail keyper on eBay right now for a fiver.

Waffle12 · 23/08/2020 10:24

Oooo thank you @belvoirbeaver

Are u able to post the link at all?

Loving all the reminiscing - I wonder if my old toys are out there somewhere being loved by someone else after maybe being brought in a charity shop or something.....🤔🤞

I'm on the app so I'm not sure if this will work but try this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184404723116

If not, just search 80s toys and it should come up near the top as I think it finishes today.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 23/08/2020 13:30

@LonginesPrime that's the one, we still have the the basket you can strap onto her back, and she also has a camera you can hang round her neck. No hat though!

I also had (but long gone) the little miss make up doll, make up appeared on her face when you swiped over it with a wet brush. Loved her. Oh, and Jem, not sure if she's in the loft but I'm pretty sure her earrings are broke.
