Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

Funny! Was explaining that quote to my kids yesterday. I’m raising rebels who will always play devil’s advocate.

Perhaps the dementors will emigrate to Australia, they'll be happy there, and will serve their ankle-tagged quarantine uncomplainingly. Given that our own government can't manage to keep tabs on real criminals, or even keep them in prison for long...

As with the German dog walking, wasn't there a thread on here "AIBU to tell you NOT to take your dogs for walks in this heat?"

PinkFondantFancy · 20/08/2020 16:56

@ShoeJunkie same here - I've started going to a fantastic bootcamp in the local park. Probably about 15 people, all happily behaving as if everything's normal. Sanitizer stuff available if anyone wants for the shared equipment, noone at all bothers. It's fantastic - I'm not licking the equipment, I'm perfectly happy!

As i predicted............its led to violence

I think, tbh, the punched man was being a prat. It's absolutely none of his business why she wasn't wearing a mask.

Maybe some of these mask stasi will think twice now.

Just waiting for the new thread all about the poor man who eas just being an upright citizen following "The rules" wanting everyone in the station to be safe and challenging the disease ridden non mask wearing person. 😞

Why don't these fecking rule followers follow the RULE that says DO NOT CHALLENGE?

www.theguardian.com/business/2020/aug/20/estee-lauder-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-globally-profits-dive-coronavirus?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=twt_gu&utm_medium&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1597940706

Estée Lauder is planning to cut up to 2,000 jobs worldwide as it shuts stores and department store beauty counters after a slump in sales and profits during the coronavirus pandemic.

The makeup, skincare and perfume company, which also owns brands such as Joe Malone, Clinique, La Mer and MAC, said it intended to shut between 10% and 15% of its freestanding stores, with job cuts amounting to about 3% of its global workforce - mostly in stores as well as related support roles.

The cuts are expected to save the company up to $400m (£300m) a year. Estée Lauder revealed net profits more than halved to $680m in the year to June. The fall came despite the group making $800m worth of savings including cuts to advertising, travel and a recruitment freeze. A quarterly dividend due in June was also ditched

While online sales surged during the pandemic, this did not fully offset the temporary closure of retail outlets around the world, Estée Lauder said. Sales were also hit by the reduction in air travel, which affected trade at airports.

Fabrizio Freda, its chief executive, said the group had delivered record sales and earnings growth in the first half of the financial year . But then the coronavirus crisis hit its business, owing to the closure of offices and retailers as well as significant decline in social gatherings, the company added. Demand for skin care was resilient, with sales up by a quarter for core products from Estée Lauder and La Mer. However, sales of makeup, haircare and fragrance all fell while beauty counters and salons were closed for weeks.

Physical distancing rules meant that close contact beauty treatments, such as facials, makeovers and eyebrow grooming, which are key parts of the sales pitch in department store beauty halls’, only resumed on 15 August in England. Many beauty halls remain closed.

Sales of lipstick, which is traditionally counted as a comforting purchase in hard times, have fallen during the crisis partly as a result of the need to wear masks in many public places

The Estée Lauder figures reflect changes across the industry. The UK health & beauty chain Boots plans to shed 4,000 jobs – the equivalent of 7% of its workforce – despite strong online growth. The beauty group L’Oreal, said its sales decreased by more than 11% in the first half of this year.

Estée Lauder said the pandemic had accelerated changes in where consumers shop, what they value, why they purchase products and how they engage with brands.

These latest job cuts came as the US reported a 135,000 increase in the number of people seeking unemployment benefits. Claims rose to 1.1m last week, compared with an expected fall to 925,000, evidence that many employers continued to slash jobs as coronavirus affects the economy. A rising number of people who have lost jobs said they consider their loss to be permanent.

There was a thread on it and people referred to the 'Thug' that did the thumping.

I think he's not quite a hero. I don't like violence but the gobby guy deserved a comeuppance of some sort.

PourMeADrink · 20/08/2020 18:39

HelenaDove it's just one company after another slashing jobs. I know some would have eventually gone without covid due to changes in shopping habits but it would have been gradual.

So depressing.

Taswama · 20/08/2020 18:40

Interesting that make up sales are falling. I almost never wear the stuff anyway but I would think there are some people who are not bothering due to going out less.
DP saw a woman having a (mask less) makeover at a beauty counter at Boots the other day, which he thought was hilarious.

wanderings · 20/08/2020 18:43

Was there a thread about the station punch up? I might even did into the CV topic to find it! Although it was unfortunate, this incident is a teeny step towards "mandatory masks create more problems than they solve".

Much as I disapprove of mask-shaming, I do hope the puncher gets the book thrown at him. After all, he could be fined £3200 for not wearing a mask. Wink

justasking111 · 20/08/2020 18:48

Estee Lauder interesting, during lockdown I seriously stocked up on it. 20% off at John Lewis, 15% in Debenhams. Estee Lauder website zero. I did put the slap on every day during lockdown. But did not bother with perfume or lipstick. Now I am going out again do have a squirt of perfume and a lick of lipstick. For the last couple of years in Debenhams many days the girl nipped across the aisle bouncing from Clinique to Estee Lauder all day. So it is nothing new here.

I don't wear makeup myself but I know that the beauty industry provides many jobs for women so I am concerned by this. All these measures have impacted women so strongly and no one has really noticed it feels like.

I was talking with a friend, another SAHM, today and it occurred to us that all the surveys about wfh never consider the impact on other people who might be in the house like, for example, I don't know, mothers and children.

justasking111 · 20/08/2020 18:51

Now thinking about it, clothes. Released from lockdown one summer dress, one summer top, one pair of cropped trousers, one pair of winter trousers. Oh and a six pack of knickers. That is it. During lockdown I bought zilch in the clothing line.

At the start of this the dementors were insisting dogs didn’t need walking

A lot of my T-shirt's have small holes in them where my jeans buttons have rubbed and I was going to replace them but thought what's the point given that I will be working at home for a while yet. Doesn't seem much point in spending money.
TheOrchidKiller · 20/08/2020 19:05

As someone who looks sadly dead without a bit of make up I still wear it, including lippy, which stains the inside of any mask, but never mind. I know I'm wearing it.

I ran out of tinted moisturiser in lockdown & couldn't get the same online. It was impossible getting a close match from looking at photos.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 20/08/2020 19:05

Since lockdown finished I've bought all online.

1 wetsuit
1 dry robe
2 life jackets
And a dress that I can wear bra free

I would normally have spent this money in next, oasis, m&s, boots, superdrug.
None of which I have any desire to set foot in while things are so weird.

chocolatesweets · 20/08/2020 19:20

Hi everyone , haven't been on this for a while. Hope everyone's ok. I regularly think about people on here and it keeps me sane. I'm still going with my two. Things are ok mostly as we see family and friends now. Now and again I get frustrated I can't do what I need as my energy levels drop; namely time of the month.
Have stopped pretending everything's ok to everyone and some days I have a grumpy face on but it's good for others to see. Looking for jobs keeping me hopefully, will get 30 hours from 3 years.
Close friend with kids "gets it" like us on here.
So shattered tonight. Having a beer ..

justasking111 · 20/08/2020 19:22

Oh joy, Austria, Croatia and Trinidad on the banned list now get home by Saturday. But you can go to Portugal.

SomewhereEast · 20/08/2020 19:34

If anyone feels like a good AD kids' film, we rewatched Wall-E a few weeks ago (DC both loved it when they were littler, so we have seen it many, MANY times) and its sooo good in light of current events. The giant spaceship the humans have retreated to is such a clever satire of lonely sterile safetyism. Pixar would never get away with it in "these unprecedented times" Grin.
