Does my daughter stand a chance at all?

My dissertation was due today at 12 and the university’s policy is that any work submitted 1 hour after the deadline will not receive any penalties, so I submitted my work at 12:58. After which I went on my email to let the course leader know that I’ve submitted it and saw the email she sent 6 weeks ago that said because this is a resubmission, work must be submitted by the deadline or they won’t be marked and the assignment failed. I don’t know what to do, I’ve not emailed anything to the course leader because I’m panicked, scared, angry, sad and can’t think straight, and I’ve also not received an email form anyone. This was my last piece of work. I don’t know what to do

Is there anything she can do?

She needs to talk to the course leader and her mentor, if it was a resubmit and that is the uni policy then she needs to find out her options.

For what it’s worth, my experience with 2dc during lockdown the university’s have not been very positive but I’m sure that’s not the case for all.

Unfortunately I think as the tutor advised 6 weeks that the resubmitted dissertation had to be in on the deadline, she hasn't got much of a leg to stand on for "I didn't read my emails".

I think emailing the course tutor is probably the only chance, admitting she thought she had up until the hour deadline but also finding out what happens if the dissertation is a fail.

She has my sympathy, it's a shit way to end bit she's better off knowing what will happen than waiting

Also today is not a good day to try and get anything out of a university as they will be more focused on clearing.

Does she have a reason that she left this til the very last minute she thought she had to do? Has she been affected by Covid or other personal circumstances? If so, she can let the course leader know about these and hope for leniency. If not, then of course she should fail- she has already had to resubmit and then handed it it late due to lack of attention to detail. Not someone I would want to employ.

Email the course leader and start from there

I think it's very unlikely considering it's already a resubmit unless there are extremely extenuating circumstances.

Agreed she needs to get in touch with the course leader now but why was she late given that it was a resubmission so even more important to have it handed in early.

I would say it's incredibly unlikely she would be allowed to submit it, especially when the email was sent so fad in advance of the date of submission.

Is there a reason she waited until literally the last 2 minutes before the deadline to submit the dissertation. It seems like an incredibly risky thing to do, surely it eas ready to submituch earlier?

She didn’t leave herself much of a buffer if there had been an internet failure or technical problem.

I can imagine it will be unlikely unless there’s a very good reason why she didn’t read her emails and also submitted it at the last minute

She says she wanted to use every minute she had to make it better. It's a very stupid thing to do, it'll be a shame that she'll lose 3 years because of her stupidity.

She should absolutely be in touch with the course leader and explain the misunderstanding. I have students whose dissertations I'm supervising and even with work that would need to be resubmitted, because of COVID, we're being very flexible with students. But we're always more likely to be understanding when students are very upfront about an issue rather than hoping we don't notice. Unless there is more to the story (she is just a nightmare rather than having genuine extenuating circumstances), I'd be inclined to let that slide at the moment if a student was mature and responsible in the way they handled it.

I am more worried that she will become suicidal again, as she's been there before. I hope this doesn't cause a relapse.

Wow - would people really fail someone for handing their dissertation in 58 minutes late? I wouldn't! I would give them a real talking to, and tell them I should be failing them, but I wouldn't do it. Its' so harsh to fail a three year course because of a missed email! We've all made mistakes where we have missed or misread something. It's common.

She absolutely needs to phone./email to explain. Ignoring the situation will make it look worse - at least if she fesses up that she has realised she made a mistake they may listen and make an allowance.

It was 58 minutes after the deadline. I would imagine the extra hour is given to prevent the issue of people who submit it at the last minute saying the website was busy or the computer crashed and that’s why it’s a few minutes late. The extra hour is a fail safe guard not a time to aim for.

I think the only thing she can do is contact someone at the university.

She should have sent it in sooner. The only way around this is if there is a very good reason she didn't send it on time.

Im staggered that she was still tinkering with it until the last minute, especially whem it was a resubmission. She needs to email her course leader asap but realistically they are likely to say there's nothing they can do.

Do you think it's possible the tutor's email meant that today was the final day for submission ie there's no further opportunity to resubmit, rather than referring to the 12pm /1 hour grace policy specifically?

If the worst comes to the worst, she might be able to take the last year again, or complete her degree with the Open University - they should give credit for most of her course, so she won't lose all 3 years.

Oh what a nightmare I can understand wanting to use every spare minute but in my experience you were always able to submit more than once before the deadline? We used to in order to get a plagiarism report check. So she could have easily submitted before the deadline and then resubmitted any changes at worst then the newest version would not have been accepted but the original would?

Not helpful now but I don’t really know what her options will be? On my course people were able to resit the research module and do another dissertation the following year.

Yes she read the email, but assumed the grace period still applied. I agree it was very stupid of her.

If she’s been delayed at ALL by covid most universities have a no detriment policy - at least the one I study with and the two I teach at do. Worth throwing herself on their mercy. If she has mental health issues that this has made worse then mention that. She might want to look for a mitigating circumstances form now and submit ASAP.

She has a better chance this year than other years as in my experience unis are being much more flexible.

The only thing I can really suggest is hope there is some lenency because of covid.
