Do you wash your clothes before you wear them?

Someone’s just called me disgusting for not washing my clothes before I wear them for the the firs time. They were talking in general not just during covid.
Have I been doing it wrong? Happy to be told that yes I should be washing everything before I wear them.

No.. why would you?

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/07/2020 19:28

Ive always washed them always will! Even coats. I wouldn’t call someone who does it differently to me disgusting though.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/07/2020 19:33

Yes. I once wore a t shirt straight after I got it, and came out in a terrible rash!
Anything that I'm going to wear next to my skin gets washed before first wear.

BereftOfInk · 24/07/2020 19:34

Yes. If they've been bought online they usually smell weird (anti moth stuff maybe?). If they're bought from a shop maybe someone else tried them on.

formerbabe · 24/07/2020 19:36

Only underwear

xolotltezcatlopoca · 24/07/2020 19:36

Yes. Definitely.

imalittlethrowaway · 24/07/2020 19:37

My husband gets freaked out when I wear my clothes as soon as I buy them Grin I like when they’re all crisp and new.

RosieLemonade · 24/07/2020 19:38

Thanks, it doesn’t bother me if someone has touched them or tried them on as it would only be very briefly. I wonder if I would
Possibly wash them if I got them from a charity shop.

What about clothes that would need dry cleaning? I just can't imagine, for example, buying a new dress for a special occasion and then washing/dry cleaning it before it's first wear.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/07/2020 19:43

Sadly I’ve not had many occasional to buy posh clothes for... And the ones I go to I rewear something that’s so old I can’t actually remember if I did get it cleaned before I wore it 😂🙄🤪

Luckystar1 · 24/07/2020 19:43

No, as far as I’m concerned it’s likely to be the best they’ll ever look. I’m not keen on ironing but even when I do, they still never look as good!

I do wash all of the children’s stuff before they wear it though (does that make me less disgusting?!)

WinterAndRoughWeather · 24/07/2020 19:45

Ooh no, clothes are always nicest before the first wash I think. They last ages before they need washing too.

Dynamodopey · 24/07/2020 19:45

Yes I wash everything before wearing. It just makes me feel icky wearing something without it being washed. I’ve got my children in the same habit and even my smelly teenagers who’s rooms are a tip, refuse to wear anything before it’s been washed!

My logic is that from the moment a fabric is manufactured, coloured, made, shipped, stored, and then sold etc etc! It will have been in all sorts of environments and chemicals used so better to wash.

However I don’t think anyone who doesn’t is disgusting. It’s just my personal preference.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/07/2020 19:45

Only if it smells weird. Eg I ordered an oversized hoody from ebay and it had a nasty chemical smell on it so washed it before wearing. Usually I wouldn't bother though.

AgentProvocateur · 24/07/2020 19:47

No. Wouldn’t cross my mind to do that.

JaJaDingDong · 24/07/2020 19:47

No. Never even thought about it until I read your post.

verypeckish · 24/07/2020 19:47
Confused

Unless you have known allergies or extremely sensitive skin, I really can't imagine why anyone would bother. I've got enough to do without fannying around washing brand new things.

KizzyWayfarer · 24/07/2020 19:48

Fair enough if they react to the chemicals which are on new clothes or are worried about those. But ‘disgusting’ is a very weird reaction, implying hygiene issues. What bacteria do they think are on brand new clothes that aren’t in our environment? Our bodies have more bacteria on and inside us than there are cells of our own (they are tiny compared to our own cells). We can’t sterilise everything and if we did we would make ourselves ill.

amylou8 · 24/07/2020 19:49

No, they look the best when they are new. Hadn't even crossed my mind to wash them.

toomanyplants · 24/07/2020 19:54

Never done this in my life!
I just chop the tags off and wear

BlueThursday · 24/07/2020 19:56

I do for everyday clothes BUT not nice going out clothes because, as a PP says, I could never get them looking all crisp and nice

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/07/2020 20:05

No, absolutely never. I do usually iron them before wearing though!

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/07/2020 20:10

Yes! Oh god, you don’t know where it’s been. What chemicals are on there etc. I mostly buy second hand now and it all smells of bloody Bold so sometimes needs washing twice.

RosieLemonade · 24/07/2020 20:11

But where could it have been? If I buy from Topshop I don’t think someone’s died in it? They’ve tried it on briefly at the most.

Never have, never will.
