Do you wash your clothes before you wear them?

Someone’s just called me disgusting for not washing my clothes before I wear them for the the firs time. They were talking in general not just during covid.
Have I been doing it wrong? Happy to be told that yes I should be washing everything before I wear them.

No. Don't wash new sheets either.

bengalcat · 24/07/2020 22:03

Never and not about to change now

Shelby30 · 24/07/2020 22:10

No nothing is ever as nice as when brand new on. No creases any ruffles etc all perfect.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/07/2020 22:11

Don't wash new sheets either. ShockSad

Faith50 · 24/07/2020 22:15

Me: underwear

DC: underwear, vests

marmitelover13 · 24/07/2020 22:20

DM never did this so I grew up not doing it and never thought about it. Since having LO I now do it for all of our clothes and wouldn't be able to skip it. Baby got eczema on the times we forgot to do a wash first.

Literallynoidea · 24/07/2020 22:26

No never

Russellbrandshair · 24/07/2020 22:27

No, never and nothing bad has ever happened 👍

Galvantula · 24/07/2020 22:27

Yes, always. Mostly because we have fucked up sensitive skin though.

Alwaysthesun · 24/07/2020 22:42

I do now. Never used to. This spring I had a massive allergic reaction to a sweatshirt from Hush which I wore before washing. It looked like I had a burn on my neck the reaction was so bad. My hands, chest and face were bad too. Luckily I had a top on underneath. I needed steroid cream for 2 weeks to clear my neck up. I've never had anything like that happen to me before. The skin on my neck only recently went back to being normal.

Hush denied there was anything on there that could have caused a reaction and wouldn't accept any responsibility. They insisted I must have a fabric allergy - I don't. I never did find out what was on the sweatshirt but it worried me what chemicals I had been exposed to.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/07/2020 22:43

Yes, they could have been tried on by many people and they have chemicals on when new.

Justkeeprollingalong · 24/07/2020 22:49

Never. Clothes are rarely as lovely after they've been washed - and I don't buy cheap clothes.
@OverTheRainbow88 You wash coats? Even proper winter coats?

ouch321 · 24/07/2020 22:49

Oh yes, someone else could have tried then on before and been sweaty in it.

Exception - coats as often you cannot stick them in the machine.

Becclescake · 24/07/2020 22:51

Screw that. New clothes are made for wearing, besides, with some cheap clothing you get shrinkage/fading issues

Stringsattached · 24/07/2020 23:00

Nope. Didn’t know anyone did. What if it shrank or went misshapen after the first wash?

I’ve worn a brand new black dress this evening. I ironed it as it was wrinkled from the packaging but it didn’t occur to me to wash it.

Sparklyring · 24/07/2020 23:01

Always! Anyone who has worked in retail would never not wash before wearing!

itbemay1 · 24/07/2020 23:06

Always. I try on clothes in shops (pre covid) and don't always buy them, they go back on the hanger to be sold to someone else. I touch clothes to feel material, clothes get dropped on the floor and re hung on the rail. I couldn't wear anything that's not been washed first but am regularly told I am ridiculous by friends/family. It's just how I am.

okeypoke · 24/07/2020 23:12

This has never ever occurred to me. They always look their beat when straight out of the shop!

Also I've never caught a disease off a new dress!

Rossaloony · 24/07/2020 23:17

I'm really weird about how clothes smell and I find new clothes smell a bit 'plastic' so yes I do

ShrimpSymphony · 24/07/2020 23:18

No and I didn’t even realize this was a ‘thing’ until this thread Confused

divafever99 · 24/07/2020 23:35

No, and it's never occurred to me to do so!

Dazzedandconfused · 24/07/2020 23:38

Yeah I always wash clothes, towels, bedding etc before I use them. I sort of thought that was the normal thing to do?
Plus if it's from a shop someone else could have tried clothes on and if its online they generally smell of plastic.

Deadringer · 25/07/2020 01:18

@WinterAndRoughWeather

Ooh no, clothes are always nicest before the first wash I think. They last ages before they need washing too.
This
RosieLemonade · 25/07/2020 05:13

I literally cannot get my head around the argument for watching it because someone else might have tried it on. Surely they are going to be wearing it for a minute at the most.
