I was furloughed from my office job from 30th March to 1st July. There were 4 BH during that time. Am I entitled to ask for them to be added to my leave so I can now take them at a later date?

I'm struggling to understand the wording on the govt website.

If it's relevant my pay was made up to 100% and I get 30 days leave per year (been there forever so have built up additional days) plus the 8 BH. Bank holidays are not booked off, the office is closed so we just automatically take the day.

As I say I don't think the wording on this subject is clear on the govt website so looking for clarity.

Thank you!

I’m pretty sure that as you’ve been paid already for them there’s nothing you can to. To be honest you’re lucky you had 100% pay in a time where many businesses are struggling and many have had to close too. We were asked to take some of our holiday during furlough, those days were topped up to 100 %. This is so that when people could return to work, there wouldn’t be a sudden influx of everyone taking leave and putting even more pressure on the business financially.

devildeepbluesea · 16/07/2020 06:21

If they made up your pay to 100% then you can't ask for a day in lieu. You've already had them.

YinuCeatleAyru · 16/07/2020 06:30

I wouldn't push to be even better off than your already really lucky position.

I am not an HR bod but just from an ethical point of view, I would say that you were furloughed for 25% of the year so 25% of your normal 38 days of leave should be considered part of that furlough so that would be 9.5 days that should be deducted from the leave you might take during the rest of the year. if your employers don't impose that, it will be yet more luck being heaped upon you. pushing to be "refunded" for "missed" bank holidays which were not in any sense actually missed (you didn't have to work on them after all) seems in very poor taste to me.

You're in danger of serious CFery here OP wow.

Whether you are entitled or not, it'd be morally wrong to take it. I'm surprised you'd have the cheek to ask.

Northumberlandlass · 16/07/2020 06:34

I think if they’ve made your pay up to 100%, you’ve got more neck than a giraffe asking for BH’s back 🙄

BillywilliamV · 16/07/2020 06:36

Would you like jam with that?

ittooshallpass · 16/07/2020 06:37

I can't quite catch my breath that you're even asking this.

You've been paid 100% salary for the whole of furlough and want to know if you can get 4 extra paid days at a later date to cover the BH day you 'missed'? You've already been more than paid for those 4 days.

I don't usually rise to these kind of CF posts, but if this is for real, you need to look around you at the thousands of people who have lost their jobs, who are getting little to no financial support and go and have a think about why your boss might not think very highly of you if you ask that question right now.

SushiGo · 16/07/2020 06:38

Oh come on, don't be that person.

TW2013 · 16/07/2020 06:41

You've just had three months off on full pay, why do you think you need another four days off? Do you need to recreate Easter, VE day and Spring Bank Holiday because you slept through the first time? Many staff were required to take holiday leave during furlough so if you have escaped with the rest intact I would keep quiet!

Standardy · 16/07/2020 06:42

So youve had full pay whilst being off for a few months, and presumably by your post a secure job to return to- yeah you would be ridiculously unreasonable. You usually don't go into the office on bank holidays but get them paid, in this case you also weren't going into the office for them and got paid. The guidance suggests that if BHs form part of your annual leave allowance and you usually work them and decide when to have them, then that's something to be discussed with your employer. The real question though is why don't you just speak to HR?

Twickerhun · 16/07/2020 06:47

Nope you could have taken the BHs same as everyone else

Tinamou · 16/07/2020 06:49

I don't understand how you feel that you missed out on the bank holidays when you weren't working on them?

Libertylee · 16/07/2020 06:49

What an absolute nerve when you’ve basically had 3 months full pay off work to ask for extra holiday!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 16/07/2020 06:52

I’m confused how you have missed the bank holidays? You were paid 100% for them!
This is so entitled and in CF territory. And people wonder why there’s been so much anti furlough sentiment

sparklefarts · 16/07/2020 06:54

Wow OP, just wow.

milkysmum · 16/07/2020 06:54

You can't be serious! You did not work the bank holidays anyway. You were at home, on full pay? There are thousands of people in serious difficulties right now, they have had significant loss of earnings, lost jobs etc. And then there are the sectors that have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic with little hope of booking in any annual leave, working double shifts, coming home to their families exhausted and then doing it all again the next day.
It is unfortunately people making cheeky requests like this that are making some of us resentful of those on 100% salary furlough ( I know this in its self is unfair though..) Please just take a step back and really consider how fortunate you have already been.

AgentProvocateur · 16/07/2020 06:55

Wow! You can’t ask to get your bank holidays back. You really can’t. Shock

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 16/07/2020 06:56

Holidays are accrued as normal during furlough & can be carried over so for your regular annual leave allowance this should be available to take when you choose once you return (unless your employer has advised that some should be taken during furlough).

BH's will not be carried over as they are set days & not included in your AL allowance to take as & when you choose. You have been paid in full for the BH's and have not been recalled from furlough to go in & work on those days - you should consider them taken.

generalexpert · 16/07/2020 06:57

I'd worry about your job rather than trying to get more time off! Be careful what you ask for.

Confusedcorona · 16/07/2020 06:59

😱 I haven't been able to work since march as the government States my small business still needs to be closed.
I've been paying all my office bills and personal bills out of my savings (no furlough for me) and it's nearly coming to an end.
My sister and mother have both lost their jobs along with many thousands of others.

You are very fortunate that you have been on full pay for 3 months. I think HR will possibly be a little shocked at your request- regardless of whether you are entitled to it, or not.

dimsumdiddly · 16/07/2020 07:00

Are you struggling to arrange childcare for over the summer holidays OP? Is that what's behind you wanting four more days off? I know the childcare issue is difficult for many but even if it's this I'd strongly advise you to find another way and not push for the bank holidays. Even if you get them it would put you directly in the boss' line of sight if they need to lose team members later on.

RubieRose · 16/07/2020 07:01

In what way did you miss your bank holidays?
You weren't at work and got paid, why would you get paid twice? Confused

Atleast you've saved yourself of asking your employer this question.

Grobagsforever · 16/07/2020 07:13

I've worked full time throughout this and had two primary age kids at home - ALONE.

And my salary (not my hours) was reduced to 80 percent as the company was struggling.

I worked bank holidays to catch up, due to aforementioned kids.

So glad my taxes have funded cheeky fuckers like the OP.

ArriettyJones · 16/07/2020 07:14

Shock I wonder if OP will be back to try to defend herself?

OhComeOnJohn · 16/07/2020 07:21

I don't think a 3 month paid holiday was enough and you should defo get extra days later in the year. Or not.
