Can you suggest non alcoholic drinks that taste like alcohol?

Just that really. Trying for a baby and like a drink for the social element but won’t drink alcohol so wonder if there’s any alternatives you could recommend?

M&S do an alcohol free Bucks Fizz which is surprisingly good.

not AF but very very low

The drydrinker website has a huge range now. I agree alcohol free wine is disgusting but several beers are really tasty, I prefer the Belgian ones.

If you want a really long drink ginger beer & alc. free beer with ice is very refreshing.

Have bought a few of the 'spirits' (Seedlip, Cedar's etc. ) but really balk at paying more than the price of a decent bottle of gin for them. If you're missing swimming in a pool then Seedlip is a good substitute for a mouthful of pool water... Feragaia and ginger ale is my favourite but you need a dribble of it - not the 50ml they recommend on the label, at £28 a small bottle they are having a laugh.

Going to try the juniper in tonic tip, thanks for that.

This!!!

Also agree with pp about kombucha, but some brands better than others.

Not to put a dampener on things but isn’t tonic to be avoided in pregnancy because of the quinnine? I was gutted when I was pregnant and read that as it was my go to non alcoholic drink. Happy to be corrected.

BalloonSlayer · 16/06/2020 11:35

I started drinking tonic when pregnant because I read the quinine helped with leg cramps. Bit late now as child in question is 12 but I have never heard it's not advisable in pregnancy.

I like Freixenet sparkling 'prosecco'-the rose is particularly nice Smile

AnneTwackie · 16/06/2020 19:19

Beira Moretti 0% is brilliant, as is erdinger, the big Sainsbury’s do a miniature or Seedlip ‘gin’ to try before you spend a bomb on a big bottle, fevertree Mediterranean with a splash of elderflower cordial comes quite close to white wine for me

CherryPavlova · 16/06/2020 19:25

I thought it was to be avoided in quantities over a litre a day.

BiddyPop · 16/06/2020 19:36

I drink a lot of plain tonic water with slice of lime (and sometimes some juniper berries, they definitely add to the gin-ny taste), either all night if I am driving, or like my 40th when I was going from 5 (straight from work) until early hours so alternated G&T with plain T all night.

We've also started to enjoy seedlip with tonic.

Proper elderflower cordial with sparkling water is very refreshing and grown up.

In terms of beer, we like:
Wicklow Wolf's AF pale ale (grey tins)
Peroni
Erdinger
Leffe (only found in Netherlands, can only get alcohol version here)
Heinekin OO was ok and a lot better than Bucks and Kaliber used to be, but a little "tinny" as some have remarked

When PG, I used to look out for lower % wines, and allow myself 1 small glass per week (under GP guidance), on the basis that a relaxed MTB was far better for Baby than a stressed out MTB. (Pretty stressful job at the time).

We also had visited Cuba while I was PG, so alcohol free mojitos were nice and refreshing (just the mint, sparkling water and no rum).

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/06/2020 19:51

Oooo @blahblahblahetcetc the juniper berries in tonic is an awesome plan!! 🙌🙌🙌

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/06/2020 19:57

Brooklyn special effects beer is my fave!

The Haymans small gin is really nice. It come with a little thimble which is 5ml. You would need 5 potions mixed with tonic to be the equivalent of just one pub measure. It has a tiny bit of alcohol per glass but a really lovely strong fragrant flavour so you really feel like you get a sort of alcoholic kick but without the alcohol.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 23/06/2020 20:09

Oh and my husband likes Becks Blue and the brew dog low alcohol beers too- his favourite is Nanny State

ellenanora5 · 23/06/2020 20:13

Great thread op, I've been wondering what good non alcohol substitutes are out there, so I'm place marking for later.

Duchessofealing · 23/06/2020 20:17

Very expensive, but Fortnums do a sparkling tea, it doesn’t taste like tea and is lovely.

Murraygoldberg · 23/06/2020 20:25

I like grapefruit and soda, it doesn't feel like a soft drink and certainly not sickly sweet like a lot of soft drinks become if you have more than one

YouBoggleMyMind · 23/06/2020 20:25

Becks Blue is rank. However I don't like normal Becks so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fizz lime cordial is nice and refreshing and Stowford Press 0.5% cider is lovely, as is 0.5% prosecco from Tesco.

The nicest a non alcoholic beer I found when pregnant was San Miguel 0%.

HPLikecraft · 24/06/2020 09:54

I have tried so many AF wines over the years, and as recently as January (for dry January). They are all revolting, unless you have a really sweet tooth and normally like sweet wine.
If you like dry wine, there's no AF version.

For beer, Beck's Blue.. that's the most dry, and nice and hoppy.

Ghostlyglow · 24/06/2020 09:59

Becks Blue and Franziskaner alcohol free hefeweizen are both good.

Ghostlyglow · 24/06/2020 10:00

Oh, and punk af from Brewdog is great too

Margo34 · 24/06/2020 10:01

Flavoured sparkling water or tonic & lime codial served with ice and a slice, are my go to pregnancy bevvies. Peach flavoured sparkling water - took me right back to Archers and lemonade 😂

I also don't dislike:

Frexienet Rose (non-alc) sparkling wine.

Non-alc Koppaberg Pear Cider

Seedlip non-alc 'gin' and tonic - tastes nothing like gin but is OK when you remove the gin association.

violetscone · 24/06/2020 10:15

Another vote for Kopperberg pear cider - it is really nice.

violetscone · 24/06/2020 10:15

Just make sure you get the non alcoholic version - it will say on the label!
