A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

His face is on the Fail website now. I thought they weren't allowed to identify him?

Smallsteps88 · 04/06/2020 18:56

I had a read on a reddit thread earlier and apparently the number now is linked to a 15 year olds snapchat/social media accounts.

If that’s the case the police will have informed that person and their parents that they needed to release the phone number to the public and the parents (if they have a brain cell between them) will have changed the number and any accounts linked to it.

Casino218 · 04/06/2020 18:59

@PennyNotSoWise the Portuguese police released the name

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 04/06/2020 19:00

If it is this person, and he had been robbing hotel rooms etc then it fits with the Portugese police being so keen to move away from the idea that there were criminals roaming these resorts, and pin it on the parents instead.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 04/06/2020 19:02

Every copper ever has had cases where they know who was responsible but don't have the evidence. Not on 'gut feeling' but through knowing who is a reliable source, who has that MO, hearing the same name time and time again but knowing and proving beyond reasonable doubt are not the same thing. I hope that they are able to get a definite conclusion and that the poor girl can be laid to rest.

ArtikosAdventure · 04/06/2020 19:09

I hope they get closure. I hope someone out there decides to lead them to her body and I hope they are spared any details of exactly how she died if it was utterly horrendous. They made a mistake. These people have lived in hell since the night she disappeared. We need to look at how we deal with the most depraved in our society. She was fucking 3. He could have dropped her off on a road and she never could have identified him. Whoever did this is evil incarnate. And prison sentences don't really reflect the true danger of those kinds of people.

PennyNotSoWise · 04/06/2020 19:10

Thanks Casino. I was a bit baffled by them saying Germany are strict on protecting identities, and then putting his face front page.

Makes sense it was a different country>different laws.

OffToSingapore · 04/06/2020 19:11

IIRC from that documentary, was there not another parent who came into their child's room and found a man? Or that the child cried out and said to the parents that a man had been there?

Yeah, I remember a mother walking into her child's bedroom and finding a strange man there. Or something like that. It was really creepy. Does anyone remember if this man had blonde hair or not? (I would look for myself but I don't have a Netflix subscription anymore).

chubbyhotchoc · 04/06/2020 19:13

@ArtikosAdventure I agree with you. I hope they get to know who killed her but I'm really fearful that the details will be horrific. The idea that he may have filmed things is just... well no words really. This year has been so terrible I just have a horrible feeling it's about to get worse with knowledge of the fate of this poor child.

PennyNotSoWise · 04/06/2020 19:13

I just can't comprehend how anyone in the world could sit on this kind of information and deprive a family of burying their baby :(

Some sick, sick fucks in the world.

mamasiz · 04/06/2020 19:14

@Survivingchipandkippee blimey, really? In my head I thought she’d be about 10. 16. Bloody hell. I am really hoping for some closure for her family.

leftovercoffeecake · 04/06/2020 19:29

The boy’s snapchat (who’s linked to the number) was all over my twitter feed. People were acting like they’d solved the case and were rejecting the concept that number’s get reused. The girl who posted it said she’d reported this guy to the police and people in the comments were commending her Hmm. The poor lad will want to change his number ASAP.

SisterAgatha · 04/06/2020 19:32

Remember they said before they were looking for a woman. Purely speculation but I wonder if the woman they believe was involved was the owner of that mysterious phone number.

A 15 year old? Who would have been two at the time? Confused Some people shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets with that level of brain power, they're positively dangerous Hmm
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/06/2020 19:33

Do you think they advised him to change it before they released it? It seems odd they didn’t think the first thing lots of people would do would be to ring it or identify who it belonged to.

Caelano · 04/06/2020 19:34

As I said many pages back, the ‘evidence’ the police seem to have is purely circumstantial. Unfortunately there were probably dozens of paedophiles within a small radius at the time. Both ones with convictions and ones without.

The fact that some other person (presumably a convict or ex con too) has said somebody told him that some guy in a pub said he knew something about what happened is fuck all in terms of proof beyond reasonable doubt. Unless there’s forensics I doubt this will go anywhere

SisterAgatha · 04/06/2020 19:36

I don’t think it’s is circumstantial. We don’t and will never know what they have. They never release the full information because they want to hold something back that anyone who comes forward can corroborate. It’s their test of truth and weeds out the fake confessions.

Damn. I was hoping the redditor was bullshitting, apparently not.

What absolute fuckwits.

But I thought that the McCanns & the others were told that there had been thefts & to be careful with valuables?
Horehound · 04/06/2020 19:41

I think they released his name so other victims could come forward and know he is in jail and feel safe to go to the police

ZiggeryZaggy · 04/06/2020 20:00

I read that the police are trying to locate his partner who he lived with in Portugal. Apparently they separated and she was rumoured to have gone back to Germany. I don’t know if that was before or after though.

Cadent · 04/06/2020 20:05

@listsandbudgets

What the German police are saying does not fill anyone with much hope as to her fate, but in essence its still better tnat what I've been thinkig all this time

This is grossly insensitive given we don't know how she died. Nothing is 'better'. This man has a history of sexually abusing women and children.

Henlie · 04/06/2020 20:16

I still can’t get past the British sniffer dogs identifying the scent of a corpse in the cupboard of the McCanns apartment and then again in the boot of the hire car four weeks after Madeleines death. Those Cadaver dogs were the best of the best at that time.

I really hope that the case does get solved, but I’d be very surprised if anything comes of these new allegations re; the new suspect.....

knittingaddict · 04/06/2020 20:28

It makes people feel more secure in their own parenting.

I think you have hit the nail n the head there SpokeTooSoon. If people tell themselves that they would never let their children be as vulnerable as the McCanns did then it can't happen to them. Makes them feel better.

Oh give over. Why don't you try and get passed it. Don't know why we need the actual police when so many on here could do such a great job on their sofas watching some dodgy tv.
