A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

@Tangochutney no one is allowed to talk to the twins about Madeleine they make that very clear to all other kids that have contact with them. They are living their lives to the full. I hear.

WhatWouldDominicDo · 04/06/2020 11:59

they know the telephone call happened, but they don’t know who the people on the other end of those transactions were?

Of course they know who the numbers belonged to. It's not difficult to find out.

Spacepocket · 04/06/2020 12:00

@SweetPetrichor which other missing children are you comparing the McCann case to?

How do they police that? Tell me they don't threaten the twins peers with litigation? Hmm

Mrsemcgregor · 04/06/2020 12:05

To be clear 2 different German men have been implicated. The first is a convicted child killer who snatched holidaying children, he is despicable however his preference is for prepubescent boys and these men rarely switch victim type. It’s unlikely he is responsible for MM. But may he rot in hell.

The second is the man revealed yesterday, we don’t know much about him other than he is currently in prison on child abuse charges and had a connection with Luz at the time of the crime.

Highnote · 04/06/2020 12:06

German suspect has now been charged with her murder

Notredamn · 04/06/2020 12:07

What an odd statement (breaking news, I'm watching now). There's a suspect, evidence presumably that she's dead and yet he's appealing to the public for help??

Mrsemcgregor · 04/06/2020 12:07

@Highnote

German suspect has now been charged with her murder
Really? I can’t see anything yet. But that’s huge.
covetingthepreciousthings · 04/06/2020 12:08

German suspect has now been charged with her murder

Have you got a link?

TheFairyCaravan · 04/06/2020 12:09

@Highnote

German suspect has now been charged with her murder
No he hasn't.

Ive just been watching the statement and they quite clearly said it's being treated as a murder investigation

HereComesSimon · 04/06/2020 12:10

I'm praying her family can get some answers from this. My heart goes out to them.

Mrsemcgregor · 04/06/2020 12:10

Can someone link the live reporting on this please?

TheFairyCaravan · 04/06/2020 12:12

The German police have just given a live statement and BBC news are covering it. I presume Sky are too
buffyp · 04/06/2020 12:14

Actually it was said in translation that he had been charged with her Murfreesboro but appears to be a translation issue

buffyp · 04/06/2020 12:14

Murder that should say

CricketCrocket · 04/06/2020 12:15

Sky news have just said that they think it might have been a translation issue as they haven’t received confirmation that the German suspect has been charged with he murder.

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 04/06/2020 12:21

He has been named but I can't see that he has been charged

Casino218 · 04/06/2020 12:23

They have just reiterated on BBC that police are now convinced she has been murdered. It seems pretty definite to me.

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 04/06/2020 12:31

I genuinely never thought they'd solve this, and I've never set much store by the other leads etc that have been reported over the years - this is the first time it's seemed there may be a chance

Caelano · 04/06/2020 12:33

Someone said upthread that those of us who aren’t confident that there will be a definitive outcome to the case are ‘not wanting there to be an outcome.’

What a sick, twisted comment.

I would hope for the sake of the family, and most of all for justice for the victim, that there is a conclusive outcome. But it’s only being realistic to say that when the only evidence is circumstantial, and doesn’t prove anything, without a confession its unlikely.

The suspect sounds like a total bastard. He apparently has multiple convictions. The German police are sure MM has been murdered. Sadly, all those things don’t necessarily mean there will be a clear outcome.

ChicCroissant · 04/06/2020 12:34

The phrase about loyalties changing and the suspect being in prison seems quite deliberate, perhaps they need someone to step forward and confirm their suspicions who would have been afraid of reprisals before now?

Ploughingthrough · 04/06/2020 12:35

I think the German police have something from him. Or something that is evidence enough to be pretty sure that she is dead. Poor wee girl it makes me sick thinking of what she could have been through.

knittingaddict · 04/06/2020 12:36

Circumstantial evidence isn't necessarily bad evidence. It can lead to prosecution if it's strong enough.

tangochutney · 04/06/2020 12:38

@Casino218 yeah I’d imagine their friends know the boundaries and wouldn’t be insensitive but it must still follow them around in general- surely everyone must automatically know them as ‘Madeleine McCann’s siblings’ before they even properly know them, peers and teachers etc Even if their friends don’t discuss it with them it must still hang over them to an extent.

mommydragon · 04/06/2020 12:41

I am sure I heard on News yesterday that he had said something to a cell mate regarding MM and that is why the Radar is on him now.
