Oh my god I've lost my job

I'm currently furloughed but been informed today that my place of work (hospitality industry) will be permanently closing. I'm not entitled to redundancy pay as I've only been there since end of last year. Has this happened to anyone else and did you manage to find a new job?

Sad

Oh heck, so sorry to hear this

FunnyInjury · 03/06/2020 17:58

That's such a shame OP, I fear there will be many more in the same boat as you unfortunately Sad

If you are after practical advice, there are temp jobs available in my area (city) in argos, sainbos and the royal mail.

Good luck Flowers

borntohula · 03/06/2020 17:58

Thank you purple

Thank you Funny, I'm gonna apply for as much as is humanly possible but there seems to be very little online in my area, I wonder if the old fashioned method of popping in with a CV would be better.

So sorry to hear that. I’m still waiting to find out if I have a job to go back to.

borntohula · 03/06/2020 18:14

@ThanosSavedMe fingers crossed for you

Really sorry to hear that. Good luck with the job search. It may well be worth popping in to try and talk to people face-to-face. If they are busy then they won't have time to sift through emails.

june2007 · 03/06/2020 18:17

Yes ring businesses directly and hand over CV,s that's how I got my current job.

AmandaHoldensLips · 03/06/2020 18:23

Bugger. Very sorry to hear that. You sound like a very positive person, and I hope that you find another job soon.

I'm one of those people who thinks that the recovery will be a lot sooner and more positive than people give credit for. All the doomsayers can sod off.

Good luck.

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 03/06/2020 18:24

Yep. I'm on maternity and I too have been told I no longer have a job to go back to. It's just the beginning of job losses I believe.

Kalim8 · 03/06/2020 18:26

I'm very sorry op (lost mine too), it feels really rubbish but it is not a reflection on you.

Your subsequent phoenix-like rise is you.

Babyroobs · 03/06/2020 18:28

So sorry op. This will be happening to thousands of people in the coming months.

starpatch · 03/06/2020 18:28

I lost mine too. Got an interview tomorrow. I am sorry OP it will take a few days for it to sink in. Hope you feel a bit better soon.

borntohula · 03/06/2020 18:29

Thank you guys.

@AmandaHoldensLips I love that you've said that, I'm generally an anxious wreck but this is so beyond anything I could have controlled, I've surprised myself by being somewhat ok!

@dancinginthemoonlight77 sorry about your job. I think you're right re job losses. Sad

Friedmushroom · 03/06/2020 18:33

Oh that’s so shit, sorry to hear that OP. Also in the hospitality sector and this has been at the back of my mind for weeks.
Good luck with the job search, fingers crossed for you!

vanillandhoney · 03/06/2020 18:33

Ah man, I'm so sorry OP Flowers

This is going to happen to so many people over the coming months Sad

highmarkingsnowbile · 03/06/2020 18:37

Sorry. Flowers This is going to be so common in the coming months.

Squidgyflump · 03/06/2020 18:37

If you have a drivers licence, look at delivery jobs too.

Good luck

ThanosSavedMe · 03/06/2020 18:37

Thanks @borntohula good luck with the job search

MagnoliaJustice · 03/06/2020 18:38

Sadly you are one of many, not that it's any consolation. I would be printing off my CV and a covering letter, and dropping it through as many business letterboxes as possible, as well as applying online. Good luck. Stay positive if you can.

strugglingwithdeciding · 03/06/2020 18:39

I think this will happen a lot unfortunately, especially within the hospitality industry as even when allowed to open some with social distancing it just won't be viable
I lost my job at the start as had only been there 5 weeks and was on a temp to perm basis , all though office based in a industry which won't be open until July at earliest and then they are expecting things to be slow
Luckily my husband has worked throughout , but being a wage down is tough
Good luck OP in finding a new job , hope you get something soon

Wheresthebiffer2 · 03/06/2020 18:42

I'm in a rubbish position, currently unemployed, because I resigned from a job I hated at the start of March. Since then I haven't even managed to get any interviews at all, because of social distancing, and lots of places have halted their recruitment processes. I had no idea this virus would come - and leave me long-term in this position. AAAgh.Obviously as I resigned, I'm not entitled to any benefit/furlough etc. Just nothing.

TerrapinStation · 03/06/2020 18:44

Have you tried courier companies, I know they are recruiting in my area, also some of the supermarkets I think are still taking people on

1forsorrow · 03/06/2020 18:47

@borntohula Thank you Funny, I'm gonna apply for as much as is humanly possible but there seems to be very little online in my area, I wonder if the old fashioned method of popping in with a CV would be better. Good idea, my local Sainsburys has a big blackboard up with job vacancies, from memory it was drivers, shelf fillers on night shift and shoppers to do on line orders.

FizzyGreenWater · 03/06/2020 18:48

I'm so sorry!

Supermarkets for sure - try them. They were advertising everywhere.

Also are you on local FB pages etc - make sure you can access online 'word gets around' stuff
