Oh my god I've lost my job

I'm currently furloughed but been informed today that my place of work (hospitality industry) will be permanently closing. I'm not entitled to redundancy pay as I've only been there since end of last year. Has this happened to anyone else and did you manage to find a new job?

Are you still getting furlough pay for a while or is that it, make sure you get your accrued holiday pay with your final pay as you still accrue it on furlough. Hoping you will have a reasonable sum to tide you over. Good luck.

Fuckityfucksake · 03/06/2020 18:51

That's awful!
Contact tracers are still being sought.
Apparently it's not been publicly advertised but if you know someone doing it they can recommend you.
My sister is doing it after losing her job at the start of lock down, relatively straight forward if you have a pc/laptop etc... It's quiet at the minute but expected not to be soon enough.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 03/06/2020 18:56

That is a shame, OP. Have you thought about courier work, if you have an appropriate vehicle? They are much in demand at the moment.

MrsGrindah · 03/06/2020 18:57

Sorry to hear that OP..my advice is try different channels..the CV route and online. Find A Job on gov.uk and Job help on gov.uk are good starting points. Tell everyone you know..you never know the opportunities that might come from friends and family. I believe businesses will recover slowly but of course there a lot of people looking for work now. Good luck.

dreamingbohemian · 03/06/2020 18:59

I'm so sorry OP Flowers

I think I might lose my job in a few weeks too

I hope I'm wrong but I think there might be a huge wave of redundancies in the near future that we are not at all prepared for

MrsTannyFickler · 03/06/2020 19:00

I lost mine in Aviation on 13th March. I've not found a new job yet. Zero chance of another aviation job.
There are loads and.lpads.of care worker positions available but that's about it.
I can't be a carer. I.just don't have it in me but I see endless.care.jobs advertised if you feel that's for you.

Glitterb · 03/06/2020 19:02

I’m sorry OP, a really rubbish situation to be in!

Sadly we will be hearing of more and more redundancies as the furlough scheme stops being ‘free’ for companies and they need to start contributing from August.

Devlesko · 03/06/2020 19:02

I'm so sorry OP.
I've been looking as doubt our business will be back any time soon, either.
It's going to be happening a lot to many soon. At least you are one of the first, so will get a job soon hopefully.

Look at delivery jobs, supermarkets, petrol stations, Royal Mail. Garden Centres, some call centres are offering wfh opportunities, but you'd need to go in for a weeks training, but they only take a few at a time and will be able to socially distance.
Have a look on here, I found a good one last week and just missed the closing date.

MrsGrindah · 03/06/2020 19:04

Also..sit down and really have a think about
A. The absolute minimum you need to earn ( taking into account the cost of working E.G. train fares)
B. Your ultimate flexibility

It’s surprising how when you do that it opens up other job opportunities you hadn’t thought of before.

borntohula · 03/06/2020 19:09

I can't drive unfortunately, I never really thought I would need to any time soon but I'm willing to do anything although I can't see me being a good carer. Sorry to anyone else in a similar position, talk about unforeseen circumstances!

I'm sorry to hear that OP.
I think the good old fashioned way of circulating your CV by hand is a good idea. It puts you out there and somebody might just prefer to have met the person and have a CV to hand rather than having to look for an employee.
Wishing you all the best.

Michelleoftheresistance · 03/06/2020 19:17

I'm so sorry OP Flowers

There will be new needs arising, and the money in the market that would have gone on such things, but it's hell while current jobs are drying up and everything's so uncertain. I keep telling myself to breathe and wait to see the new opportunities as they appear.

Redwren · 03/06/2020 19:19

Sorry to hear that op, I've been made redundant to. I will struggle to find anything until childcare is sorted. I hope you find something to. Have a look online at places like the OU and see if there are any free courses available which will help strengthen your cv. I'm nearly finished my first 4 week one and I feel good about having some fresh learning

SonjaMorgan · 03/06/2020 19:27

Sorry to hear this. I don't see the economy picking up anytime soon, especially with the prospect of a no deal Brexit. I had to close my business a month ago. It's been awful.

Shadeslayer · 03/06/2020 19:27

Sorry to hear that. I know in my area they are posting jobs in windows or on fb pages to try to allow locals the chance first so maybe a wonder around town?

ChessIsASport · 03/06/2020 19:30

Do you have any experience with children? I know loads of people desperately trying to find childminders for the summer holidays since it looks like the normal summer clubs won’t be happening.

MrsGrindah · 03/06/2020 19:30

DFE has an online skills toolkit which might be really useful if you are interested in gaining new skills

tmh88 · 03/06/2020 19:34

Oh op it’s so hard isn’t it! I’m in the hospitality industry and lost mine too end of March. Hope you find something else soon Flowers

Snowpatrolling · 03/06/2020 19:34

Is that frankie and bennys? I know a few that found out today. :(
Really hope you manage to get something quickly.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/06/2020 19:38

So sorry Op...my job is based on foreign travel so looking very iffy at the moment...we've been told our jobs are safe but we've had to agree to having our hours cut...i wont be able to survive on the new hours so will have to try and find a 2nd job.

DrDavidBanner · 03/06/2020 19:40

Oh shit hula that's rubbish. I hope you can find something soon.

borntohula · 03/06/2020 19:45

Made redundant last week, I've been getting in touch with a couple of former colleagues, putting out feelers, then I'll be putting the CV about.

gunnernat · 03/06/2020 19:55

My partner has also been made redundant, and like you he wasn’t entitled to any redundancy pay as he had only been there a year. His notice period has thankfully been extended to two months, and he’s been told that he’ll receive 80% pay for June and then 100% pay for July. The current situation for us is that whilst he would love to be out working, looking for a minimum wage job to start as soon as possible would leave us in a worse financial position that staying at home on the 80% for now, and we have the added complication that our dog walker is shut until September.. He’s using this time to try and build a graphics design portfolio to see if he can earn any money that way, and also applying for jobs that pay slightly more than minimum wage for now. We’ve applied for payment holidays for the mortgage and car finance to help up build up a bit of a buffer before he is actually made redundant and if he can’t find anything within the next month then he’ll be applying for anything and everything available! It’s a really rubbish time, and I’m so sorry that you’re going through it too! I hope it all works out for you and you find something soon OP!
