Oh my god I've lost my job

I'm currently furloughed but been informed today that my place of work (hospitality industry) will be permanently closing. I'm not entitled to redundancy pay as I've only been there since end of last year. Has this happened to anyone else and did you manage to find a new job?

Sorry to hear about people who have had job losses. I think there will be a lot of people enjoying themselves at home on 80 per cent pay who will lose their jobs but just don't know it yet. Go for jobs quickly before others lose their jobs and there is more competition. Revamp your CV and definitely send out CV on spec.

Lumene · 03/06/2020 20:08

I know one person so far who lost their job (office manager) and found a new one within a week. Good luck!

Wakaranaihito · 03/06/2020 20:24

@starpatch - good luck tomorrow with your interview! To everyone else - careworkers are still in huge demand so it might be worth looking there. Also I understand that some councils are bypassing the long recruitment processes just to get bums on seats for the time being - ditto the NHS. So if you have friends who work in those services might be worth asking them if there are any jobs going and then contacting the head of those departments direct.

Hi OP I've also been Made redundant. It's worrying and I know if I can't find a job reasonably soon. Apart from the financial problem there will be a lot more people In My position so more competition for jobs too

whatashower · 03/06/2020 20:27

Op, you have great advice here. But I just wanted to add that you are allowed to include your dreams and ambitions in your planning. Yes you have to pay the bills and you have an immediate challenge to get a job - any job - you may not have even considered before. But having the self belief that you can get to where you want to be in the future is a good thing too. And might influence where you look and what you do for now. Best of luck.

Nanalisa60 · 03/06/2020 20:28

I’m so sorry for you but unfortunately there will be so many more in the same boat when furlough finishes.

I used to work somewhere which I thought was a great place to work but got made redundant. I found a new job and realised just how much worse my previous work place was, I needed that kick to get out and now I'm somewhere which I really love. Good luck OP.

I was made redundant a couple of years and tbh it was one of the worst times of my life, so I really and truly sympathise op. I am so lucky to be in the NHS now, love my job, have you thought about applying for a temporary portering, catering or domestic role to support the Covid crisis?, they take on for these posts in my trust and most people willing to work get around 30 hours work per week. My other tip is if it says to apply online, do so, we get lots of people who apply either by email or cv, but the only way to apply for these roles is through the NHS online system, I am continually emailing people back to advise them of this, despite the vacancies advertised as such. The very best of luck to you, try not to panic and cut the non essentials as much as you can?

Unfortunately the economic catastrophe we have brought upon ourselves is going to be made abundantly clear in the next few months, I still cannot believe we have voluntarily destroyed our economy. Wouldn't surprise me if more people die as a result of the lockdown than covid itself.

Bollss · 03/06/2020 21:20

Op I really feel for you. Check NHS jobs website as someone said. I am extremely close to getting made redundant and have managed to get an admin role. I don't know whether that's your kind of thing but there were a few different jobs going at our trust. Even something temp would put you on.

Also check your council's job site if they have one. I find roles on ours don't get posted to indeed etc

Try and put a post on a local FB group as well. I've seen a few people do that and comments back offering them interviews at small local business!

Good luck!

Yes DD3 had this happend she just got a new job, left the other one was told that new job wasnt to be (Aviation industry( then managed to get another and that disappered so poor sod has been well upset.

Still she almost got a job, still waiting to hear, she'll lke doing just as well as I've bene subbing her out since then;!

MoaningMinniee · 03/06/2020 21:51

@gunnernat I'm a dog walker. There were a couple of weeks at the beginning when we didn't know what we could do or not do and how to do anything safely. Now we do. We've been running again using biosecurity measures for the past seven weeks.

gunnernat · 03/06/2020 22:14

@MoaningMinniee Oh that's interesting! Ours shut up shop the day that lockdown started and has remained closed since. She has done a preventing COVID-19 course and from her messages it appears to be more of a financial issue with reopening whilst most people are furloughed or working from home rather than safety related issues.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/06/2020 22:38

In the same industry and although my place should be ok as it is high take, its not guaranteed and I am waiting for the inevitable redundancies. I too wont get anything as I have been there just a year.

ozymandiusking · 03/06/2020 22:57

This is lousy news for you. You have my sympathy.
Be as proactive as possible, and I would say yes take your CV to anywhere feasible. Good luck .

relievedlady · 04/06/2020 09:25

Sorry for all of you that have lost jobs Confused

I'm in the last phase of opening (leisure) and from a very small business so starting to get twitchy that there won't be a business to go bak to or hours reduced etc etc.

Am lucky that dh has worked right through in a key worker role and his industry is busier than ever at the minute although that doesn't mean anything in these times and financial climate Hmm

I've been doing the odd bit of courier work. It's not the easiest but it brings in a bit extra depending on how many days a week you want to do.

I've not done any for two weeks as dh hours have been frantic so need to be home but am going to start again next week just a couple of days here and there to build up a bit of reserve just in case.

I know our supermarkets and care homes are advertising at the moment

My friend who runs a cleaning company is starting to get back up and running and says she will be looking for new staff who have previously worked in the hospitality industry because they will know about standards of cleanliness and hygiene etc. It might be worth looking in that sector - there will be a lot of offices opening up again which will need deep cleans and more regular cleaning of shared spaces. Good luck, anyway!
