Are people wearing masks out & about where you are?

This very much isn't intended as a discussion of the pros and cons of mask wearing! I'm just genuinely curious. They're a very rare sight where I am - even staff in shops & supermarkets don't bother - but I get the impression we're outliers?

Just to add, you literally never see masks worn outdoors in our town. If you see them at all, its shops and supermarkets.

I would say at most 10% are wearing masks out and about. Slightly Higher on public transport or in shops, but certainly not the majority. I did see someone wearing one at the bus stop the other day who then pulled it down when she got on the bus which was a bit odd.

Went to the supermarket yesterday, 2 people including me were wearing masks.

They’re a fairly rare sight here too. I’ve seen the occasional one but they certainly aren’t the norm.

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/06/2020 13:01

No but I live in a village. The only people I have seen are HCPs in full PPE doing home visits to people in the sheltered accommodation on my road

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2020 13:01

About half

onemouseplace · 03/06/2020 13:02

DH (who has been going to the shops) says people are wearing masks (although none of the staff in Superdrug were yesterday which he thought very odd).

At the (busy) park we went to on Sunday I saw one person wearing a mask.

Mesmeri · 03/06/2020 13:02

Where I am, it's the law to wear masks in indoor public spaces. No-one wears them outside.

Incrediblytired · 03/06/2020 13:04

My town has 26000 and virtually no one wears masks. I do In shops but i feel like people in public look at me and think I’m OTT

TemoraryUsername · 03/06/2020 13:04

None on dog walks. Maybe 5% of people who I see generally. 100% of people at the pharmacy attached to a doctor surgery yesterday, which I was pleased about.

YgritteSnow · 03/06/2020 13:04

Yes, many are. I'm in London.

Missyelliottsaysso · 03/06/2020 13:08

I wear one when I am food shopping and am definitely in the minority. In fact, I feel like people are looking at me in a judgey way especially when I’m loading up with my lactose and gluten free items.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 03/06/2020 13:09

About a quarter on the High Street maybe a third in shops, fewer in parks or on residential roads, no joggers, more likely for women, East Asians, older or visibly disabled people as you’d expect.

PurpleDaisies · 03/06/2020 13:09

No.

SomewhereEast · 03/06/2020 13:09

I'm in a pretty average northern town - population 40k, socio-economically mixed but more middle class than working class. I'd say 1-2% of people are wearing them in indoor spaces.

I'm in the minority when I wear one in a shop, I'd agree maybe 10/20%

OhTheseSummerNiiiiights · 03/06/2020 13:14

About a third to a half here outside Glasgow. Fairly spread across ages too.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 03/06/2020 13:16

I saw 2 people in my local Asda yesterday wearing masks although one of them it it only covering her chin.

Sarcelle · 03/06/2020 13:19

SW London. I see about a quarter people around with masks, mainly elderly people (male and female), asian people (both sexes) or black young guys. I think with the latter they are becoming a craze, could be wrong but they are all wearing black masks. I don't see any black women wearing them.

Ghostlyglow · 03/06/2020 13:21

Very few. I'm in a West Yorkshire city.

homemadecommunistrussia · 03/06/2020 13:22

I thought they weren't much use outside, that they can help indoors, where social distancing is difficult. If you wear them all the time then you would have to have a very large supply so that you can change them very regularly.

merryhouse · 03/06/2020 13:23

I shop at a large supermarket twice a week. The last few times I've gone, I've seen a handful of shoppers in masks. Still nowhere near enough to make me feel self-conscious about not wearing one.

When this all started, it was only people of SE-Asian ethnicity (who tend to be mainly students round here) in masks, but this week I saw a middle-aged couple who (I could tell from their accent) were decidedly local.

Chewbecca · 03/06/2020 13:27

I’d say about 10% in the supermarket. Zero on the streets.

Odd as it is ubiquitous in other countries.

Wish the science was clearer on the benefits.

MouseholeCat · 03/06/2020 13:27

I'm in the US where it's recommended, so perhaps my answering is cheating?! All store workers and about 40-60% of the public are mask-wearing but it depends on which store you're in.

OldLace · 03/06/2020 13:30

NE England.
No, not inside or outside.
I think I've seen 2 people wearing them in 10 weeks?
