Are people wearing masks out & about where you are?

This very much isn't intended as a discussion of the pros and cons of mask wearing! I'm just genuinely curious. They're a very rare sight where I am - even staff in shops & supermarkets don't bother - but I get the impression we're outliers?

I went to Asda this morning. I didn’t see any customers with masks on and I saw 2 staff members wearing one. It’s a rare sight where I live

BearSoFair · 03/06/2020 16:02

East London, I'd say maybe 20% are wearing masks. Decreasing compared to a couple of weeks ago. Mostly older people and young women. Very few younger men seem to use them!

Myfavouritechild · 03/06/2020 16:05

I can’t speak for the whole of Massachusetts as I’m sure there are areas not adhering to the guidance but my town is fine. The medical exemption is a tricky one as no one is allowed to ask why you are not wearing a mask. In reality stores can and will deny you entry. People here are being pretty good about distancing. We have 6ft marks on floors, some stores only allow one person to the tills at a time and if you stray over the line will challenge you. There’s plexiglass barriers up everywhere as well. In some stores it’s made shopping so much nicer! We had an issue with a couple of garden centres being full and people were worried so now they count people in and out.

Had my hair done this week for the first time since it started. That was an interesting experience wearing a mask for that too!

Really the only time I’m out is for daily exercise or shopping in Tesco.
Out walking I don’t remember seeing anyone wearing a mask.
Tescos a handful of people are wearing them.
None of the staff.
I have purchased a face mask with the view that when the restrictions are lifted further and more people are out and about I may feel it necessary to start using them.

teenagetantrums · 03/06/2020 16:18

Lots of people here in a all south west town wearing them. Seems to be mainly older people and men. On the streets and in shops.
I don't wear one ever. I work in a care home but not dealing with residents so l don't need one at work. I tried one on. Hated it. Have every respect for people who have to work in full ppe.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 03/06/2020 16:20

Yes because it’s the law here!

RoseMartha · 03/06/2020 16:23

About 2-5% of people I see when out.

WyfOfBathe · 03/06/2020 16:29

Town in SE England. About 50% in supermarkets, more than that in the pharmacy.

I see very few people wearing them outdoors. The few I do see are mainly East Asian or very elderly. A couple of weeks ago there were definitely more young, white people wearing them. Most cyclists seemed to be wearing them not long ago, but I saw quite a few cyclists this morning and none of them were.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/06/2020 16:33

Quite a lot here but tends to be the Chinese (of which there is a big population) and they wore them a lot anyway, even well before covid.

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/06/2020 16:54

I’m in a northern city, population 900k. About 20% of people wear them in the street, slightly more in shops. Not sure about public transport.

Deathraystare · 03/06/2020 16:58

A number of people are but not everyone. Some have them down to their chin and they are very grubby looking! That is so they can constantly phone and invite people over!

lakeswimmer · 03/06/2020 17:17

No they're not - I've seen one or two in a local supermarket (customers not staff) and the staff in Boots are wearing them. You also need to wear one in our local health centre and they give them out at the entrance. It's a rural area and not difficult to self distance.

canigooutyet · 03/06/2020 17:32

@Myfavouritechild
How was it getting an hair cut other than wearing a mask?

I’m itching for them to open just for that head massage hair wash. I no longer care I made a bit of a mess with the home cut lol. I will happily leave after a quick towel dry.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/06/2020 18:00

Yes, (cheater here too) in Berlin - it's mandatory in enclosed spaces (busses, hairdressers, physiotherpist, libraries, shops, at the doctors etc.) - there are new functions in shops: door attendants.
This morning on my way to work by underground, I'd say about 98% of passengers wore a covering. DS had to wear a mask when changing rooms at school (not enough space to distance in some corridors)
DD took books back to uni library - masks for those waiting inside for their turn.
As it is not meant to give a 100% medically vaild protection but meant to minimize, it is becoming a 'thing' - to match your outfit, to make a statement, to dangle your earphones from.

hellsbellsmelons · 03/06/2020 18:04

I don't see many at all.
Although I only shop once every 9 days or so.
And other than that I walk the dog and no-one is wearing a mask.

Myfavouritechild · 03/06/2020 18:39

@canigooutyet it was weird. My hairdresser has a salon in a large building made up of just salons. She rents a room in the building. They have to buzz clients in at appointment time (no hanging around), she can see no more than 5 clients a day (she was seeing up to 10 a day before Covid), must have a minimum of 15 minutes between clients to clean up and we must wear masks. The health board can make unannounced visits so people are being careful.

Colouring was probably the most uncomfortable as she puts me under a heat lamp so that with the mask was a tad warm. An OK experience but just more uncomfortable especially as the air conditioning isn’t very effective.

Some of the bigger salons are only using every other chair if you get my meaning (so chairs 1 then 3 then 5). I saw a salon yesterday with someone having their haircut in the car park!

sonjadog · 03/06/2020 18:44

In Norway, where I live, I hardly see any. Maybe about 2-3 out of a hundred people. Mask wearing hasn't been a thing here. I guess it is probably because we don´t live closely packed together as people do in some other countries. We also haven't had the same lockdown restrictions as the UK, probably for the same reason.

BiddyPop · 03/06/2020 18:55

I'm in the suburbs of a major city. There are a lot of masks around - many elderly are wearing them just out walking. Over 75% of people in shops are wearing them. But people just out walking are more like 30-60% (depending on place and time of day). I haven't been on public transport so can't say (I just know that buses and trains all seem very very empty...).

strugglingwithdeciding · 03/06/2020 20:45

Not many ,

howlatthetrees · 03/06/2020 20:46

No no one here

Chillipeanuts · 03/06/2020 20:49

About 50/50 here (Small north western town). Which surprises me, expected fewer.

SpeedofaSloth · 03/06/2020 20:49

Some, in supermarkets and in the public areas at work (hospital). I would guess about 10% maybe?
I don't have any masks but I carry a cotton bandana with me in case I am asked to wear a face covering anywhere.

vanillandhoney · 03/06/2020 20:51

Barely anyone does here. Maybe 5% of people I see have a mask on and most of those look like health care workers.

People are maintaining social distancing though Smile

Frenchfancy · 03/06/2020 20:59

I'm in France. The vast majority are wearing masks on shops etc. Many places won't let you in without one. I've had several meetings this week, always masked.

goingtotown · 03/06/2020 21:00

North London yes lots.
