We're currently living near a bakery where the bread is almost always both crusty and still warm from the oven when you buy it. It's RIDICULOUSLY delicious and tends to go stale/mouldy very quickly so it's very easy for me and DP to horse down a loaf between us in a day. They put it through the machine so they're normal slices not the hacked off doorstep slabs I'd cut myself but even so 4 - 6 pieces a day seems excessive. What can I eat instead to stop me reaching for the bread-bin all day?? I tend to have two with breakfast (toast or tofu sandwich, avos on toast etc) and then almost always grab a few pieces with spread or Vegemite/peanut butter throughout the day. (Vegan btw).

I'm thinking I need to get into shakes or protein balls (BOAK) to fill me up. I have some protein powder but it's unbelievably disgusting.

Urgh, I feel like I've eaten a whole compost heap already today. I'm going for a bloody run.

Since lockdown we have been having a lot more freshly baked rolls. Either us or neighbours are going to the co-op and we have fresh baked rolls most days.

Solongtoshort · 28/05/2020 08:21

I love bread too. Just eating gorgeous sourdough with loads of real butter and homemade apricot jam.
Thinking about my lunchtime baguette, what to put in it? Hmm

foamrolling · 28/05/2020 08:28

Just eat the bread! As long as you're healthy and eating other stuff too then crack on. If you're really determined to cut down on that delicious carby goodness though you could always out the loaf in the freezer. They keep really well like that and it stops the feeling of having to eat it all before it goes stale.

ToastedHaMSandwich · 28/05/2020 08:28

Me too. And it’s not good for me. Why is wam fresh bread and butter so damn lush and so bad

ToastedHaMSandwich · 28/05/2020 08:29

Wam bread gah warm even

VictoriaBun · 28/05/2020 08:32

We have been making our own, it's gone from solid bricks in the early days , to loaves of pure heaven.
Don't beat yourself up about loving bread . I think once things settle down or this new way of being becomes our new normal, your usual daily eating habits will return.

Kalifa · 28/05/2020 08:36

So when did bread become the enemy? The number of people I know who never touch bread is staggering. I could never live without bread, I eat it every day. I wonder how people who never eat bread eat cheese, salami, butter or jam. What do they put these things on?

homemadecommunistrussia · 28/05/2020 08:41

Bread is the best. I even love touching it oooohWink

Worriedaboutmyfriend · 28/05/2020 08:42

I love bread too!

DoTheNextRightThing · 28/05/2020 08:44

Oh my god I feel this in my soul. I'm gluten free now and the bread is not nearly as nice but when I (thought) I could eat bread, I ate it all the time. Stress ate an entire warburtons toastie loaf whilst studying for exams. Tiger bread, crusty bread, garlic bread, subway sandwiches... b r e a d 🍞

BecomingMe · 28/05/2020 08:44

I could live on bread. Sometimes I have had toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, then bread with my evening meal and toast at bedtime!

I must say on days like that it does not agree with my digestion.

Shinjirarenai · 28/05/2020 08:45

Battling a serious toast addiction here...

Turnandfacethenamechange · 28/05/2020 08:45

So when did bread become the enemy?

It's not if you have any sort of self control. But since we moved near the bakery six weeks ago I've put on three kilos Grin

I love it too, but have had to go cold turkey as I have been eating way too much - we have an excellent bakery near us too.

Bloops · 28/05/2020 09:00

Rice crackers are a lot less calories and you can still put all the regular toppings on that you'd normally put on your bread.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2020 09:02

Yum...bread
Madly, our village got a new bakery about a month ago. We now have a twice weekly order for a sourdough bloomer and a honey& spelt loaf.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2020 09:04

Posted too soon....

The new bread, in combo with the locally produced cheese, is ensuring that I will leave lockdown twice the size I started. I need to go back to the office!

Charles11 · 28/05/2020 09:04

Put it in your freezer so you have to plan to eat it.

Turnandfacethenamechange · 28/05/2020 09:05

Crackers is a good idea actually. They're basically air made solid!

Another bread addict checking in. We've just bought a breadmaker & its so bloody easy to make a delicious loaf. Dh is baking one now. Tried rolls for the first time yest & going to do some for the freezer for dc lunches this avo.

Look at this for a first attempt at rolls!

I bloody, bloody love bread so much.
PecorinoPear · 28/05/2020 09:09

Proper bread should go stale, not mouldy.

Day 1, fresh bread with butter.
Day 2, toast / croutons / panzanella
Day 3, eggy bread / bread and butter pudding / apple Charlotte / bread crumbs

You can freeze bread at any stage. I always have crumbs on the freezer for scotch eggs, aranchini, breaded chicken strips, breaded mushrooms.

I love bread

Charles11 · 28/05/2020 09:11

@buckeejit they look amazing.
I could get through most of that in a day. Marmite, cheese, tomato and balsamic vinegar, jam, cream cheese,
Just butter, dip into a bit of salted olive oil.
The combinations are endless.

BoogleMcGroogle · 28/05/2020 09:12

There's a good reason why bread is a staple food the world over! I love, love, love bread. My favourites are a proper French sourdough baguette, Middle Eastern flatbreads age Ethiopian Injera.

I just made soda bread for breakfast. We had it with cheese, apples and Normandy butters. It was really quick and absolutely delicious.

Kept eating good bread, it's good for the soul. I would never, ever eat a protein ball.
