We're currently living near a bakery where the bread is almost always both crusty and still warm from the oven when you buy it. It's RIDICULOUSLY delicious and tends to go stale/mouldy very quickly so it's very easy for me and DP to horse down a loaf between us in a day. They put it through the machine so they're normal slices not the hacked off doorstep slabs I'd cut myself but even so 4 - 6 pieces a day seems excessive. What can I eat instead to stop me reaching for the bread-bin all day?? I tend to have two with breakfast (toast or tofu sandwich, avos on toast etc) and then almost always grab a few pieces with spread or Vegemite/peanut butter throughout the day. (Vegan btw).

I'm thinking I need to get into shakes or protein balls (BOAK) to fill me up. I have some protein powder but it's unbelievably disgusting.

Urgh, I feel like I've eaten a whole compost heap already today. I'm going for a bloody run.

I joined this as I thought it was parents who are struggling , getting advice on parenting and sharing their experiences. Not a discussion about bread and the other nonsense I have seen on here.

The butter with the salt crystals on fresh crusty bread.... 😍

buckeejit · 28/05/2020 09:21

@LTP2020 how dare you. I am a parent who is struggling with bread!

Another bread lover here. We have a bread maker but use it mostly for dough recipes which are shaped and baked in the oven. Yesterday it was focaccia. Today I will make French sticks, I think.

Recently discovered bread recipes by Chef John - this one for ciabatta...

Turnandfacethenamechange · 28/05/2020 09:29

A bread maker would end me Grin

Well that told me. Fair shout

Megatron · 28/05/2020 09:33

We have been making our own, it's gone from solid bricks in the early days , to loaves of pure heaven.

How did you do this @VictoriaBun? Bread is my nemesis!

@LTP2020 good god there's all sorts of shite on here - you should have done more research. Grin

Valkadin · 28/05/2020 09:36

Bread isn’t the enemy but it does make me feel bloated, it didn’t used to. Apparently wheat these days contains more gluten.

@LTP2020 the Chat section is mostly full of shite. Sometimes we want to chat about other things.

@rosegoldwatcher that's bread porn.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 28/05/2020 09:39

To whoever said how do you eat cheese and salami without bread - I put it on my salad 😭

Harveyrabbit76 · 28/05/2020 09:39

I am trying the no knead method by lahey and honestly it is a revolution after the years I spent making bad sourdough and under kneaded bread. Recommend it!

lurkingfromhome · 28/05/2020 09:40

Oh how I love bread. I gave up most carbs a few years ago and hardly ever eat potatoes, pasta or rice etc. Could not give up bread. It's just too delicious.

Lovely ciabatta fresh out the oven with salted butter, toasted flatbreads dipped in hummus, home-made soda bread with smoked salmon and soured cream. Food of the gods.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/05/2020 09:42

currently scarfing down two slices of toast with marmalade (also home made!)

I have been making my own bread since lockdown, just so we don't have to shop so often, dh says we are NEVER buying shop bread again

I made a gorgeous loaf yesterday and it was on the table cooling when I went to bed, dh was on a back shift and crawled into bed about 4 am I think...all I could smell was bread...I came down and the loaf is missing quite a few inches :o :o

I shall have to make another one!

Wiaa · 28/05/2020 09:42

I so want warm fresh bread right this minute!

thelostartofkeepingsecrets · 28/05/2020 09:45

We’re making a fresh loaf every couple of days - I’m like Bruce Bogtrotter with it!

@Megatron we use this recipe - www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/easy-white-bread%3famp?client=safari - we’ve got a kitchenaid so it’s 2 minutes on number 2 if you’ve got one, or else knead for 10 mins. It’s so delicious!

simonneilsbeautifulhair · 28/05/2020 09:49

I have no advice as I am another vegan bread addict. I do however have a recipe for the easiest and quickest rosemary and sea salt focaccia, no bread maker required 😬

Megatron · 28/05/2020 09:51

Thank you @VictoriaBun I've tried that recipe and it came out like a brick - so it's clearly me and not the recipe! 🤣

Xiaoxiong · 28/05/2020 09:52

I signed up for a sourdough breadmaking course at the beginning of lockdown and like you Laurie I'm never buying bread again. (We have no bakeries, artisanal or otherwise, within 20 miles). It's heaven.

In fact, I must pop into the kitchen as I have 6 sourdough baguettes proving in the fridge and I want to bake two so we have fresh bread for lunch Grin

Chillipeanuts · 28/05/2020 09:53

We were bought a bread maker years ago, hardly touched it.
We’ve been using it for weeks now and don’t think we’ll buy bread again.

The thread is titled "I bloody love bread" what did you think it would be about? Hmm
lurkingfromhome · 28/05/2020 09:56

The Hairy Bikers do a brilliant bread made with mashed potato that I made a few years ago. I couldn't believe it would taste as light and delicious as it does.

www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/japanese-milk-bread-rolls-recipe#reviews

Just going to leave this recipe for the most amazing crusty yet soft bread rolls Ive ever made here (enriched dough). Serious, bakers, try it. I make the dough in the bread machine then final prove on the tray. You are about to put on 2 dress sizes. You're welcome! Grin
