Inspired by another thread - and being a Sociologist (after a fashion..) -
thought I'd start this thread.

OK here goes:
Luton
Slough
Blackburn
Corby

Luton is a commuter town for many many professionals in London. Definitely not predominantly WC at all

You're right in part. I live in Luton and places like Wigmore are worlds apart from the likes of Luton Town area. They're literally such opposites. Most working professionals won't touch the town area with a stick. Which is a shame. I grew up somewhere worse... I would live there for the cheap pricing of flats to save for a deposit but it's a no from a born and bred Luton DH

AlexCabot · 16/05/2020 19:02

Portsmouth isn't a town, it's a city.

Seeing Dartford mentioned made me chuckle. I've a relative who lives there and is an ENORMOUS snob. She'd be having an attack of the vapours at the very thought of being associated with the working class.

Despite actually being working class herself!

Theukisgreatt · 16/05/2020 19:04

You can work a professional job in London and still be WC Grin

Settle59 · 16/05/2020 19:07

SunflowerSeedsForever

I admit I've never been - it's everything I've heard second hand - and about 15 yrs ago so I admit to being out of date

It may be a city - but
Plymouth

Kettering
Milton Keynes

AvalancheKit · 16/05/2020 19:08

Sorry......Daventry

Destroyedpeople · 16/05/2020 19:10

Calling Daventry 'chaventry' isn't funny.

What's a 'chav' then?

Somebody you can sneer at?

FerneGreene · 16/05/2020 19:12

You beat me to Port Talbot.

Milford Haven

Destroyedpeople · 16/05/2020 19:21

Oh haha I forgot my nearest town.

Llanelli.

thunderthighsohwoe · 16/05/2020 19:21

I grew up in Lincolnshire. Definitely Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Doncaster.

Now live in East Sussex, on the Kent border. Hastings absolutely is, bar possibly the Old Town.

Lostvoiced · 16/05/2020 19:28

I was born in Gravesend, went to school in Northfleet. Nice to see it already made the list. Not quite sure how I feel about this thread. Could come off as "Let's list where all the peasants are" - though I'm sure that's not the intention. Wink

One time I told someone I was from Gravesend and they literally said "Oh, fucking hell".

I mostly just say I'm from Kent.

CoachBombay · 16/05/2020 19:29

Wales

Excluding Monmouthshire, Brecon and Pembrokeshire

Cardiff is a tricky one mix off many demographics in that one.

I am Welsh before anyone jumps on me.

StoorieHoose · 16/05/2020 19:30

What is the point if this thread? Sneery? Goady?

Settle59 · 16/05/2020 19:36

StoorieHoose - no - just a reaction to middle class towns. No intention to offend...in fact was meant to be semi lighthearted in the sense that towns are a mixture of different demographics...also places change in demographic significantly over time..

Hebden Bridge - ie a town very different now from lets say 50 yrs ago

Hippoplatypus · 16/05/2020 19:40

Gawd, lighten up....when you live in a crap hole of a town you have to laugh or go mad

butterpuffed · 16/05/2020 19:41

Nottinghamshire is a county not a town

Bertoldbrecht · 16/05/2020 19:42

Maybe the title should have been 'working class towns shafted by the tories'
Grin

Rightbutno · 16/05/2020 19:43

@Settle59 what is the point of this thread? I really can't see how you can intend it to be light hearted when working class is seen as inferior to middle class. If you're a sociologist I'm sure you have something way more interesting to contribute re class, geography and the British obsession with class and it's signifiers.

Hippoplatypus · 16/05/2020 19:44

Also;

Cheshunt
Waltham Cross
Enfield (is that London or Middlesex?)

Shannith · 16/05/2020 19:48

Harlow. Shudder.

StoorieHoose · 16/05/2020 19:51

@Hippoplatypus was that to me? I was just interested in the Ops motives as I didn't see the middle class town thread

MarylandMayhem · 16/05/2020 19:51

Doncaster

ErrolTheDragon · 16/05/2020 19:54

Gloucester

No way.

Everywhere north of Norwich.

You've never been to Harrogate or York or ( etc....) have you?Grin
