Coke float

Did anyone else have these as a kid (in the 80s)? They were lush.

For some reason was just thinking about it. DS2 looked at me like I was batshit when I tried to explain it. I've got coke here but no vanilla ice cream.

I was not keen but drank them anyway as I knew they were supposed to be a nice treat and I must be missing something so I kept at it, all the while thinking, this isn't very nice Grin

Anyone else used to have a parent who added a packet of sugar to Coke when on holiday, to make it fizz loads?

Notso · 09/05/2020 13:47

Love them, and root beer floats. I used to love noisily slooing up all the froth with a straw, until I got told off for bad manners!

BettyUnderswoob · 09/05/2020 13:48

Ah yes, used to enjoy those in the 1970s as a child. It was the ultimate treat in the popular cafe in my home town.

Was back visiting a couple of years ago, the cafe still looks the flippin’ same! Same pics on the walls and everything, after 40 odd years. New menu though, and no coke floats, sadly.

We used to have them in The Wimpy all the time! Loved them. Mum would put the washing into the laundrette, then we would wait for it in The Wimpy with a cola float. Happy days!

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2020 13:56

Swanage still had a Wimpy in 2018 i just think they forgot to close it Grin

mon15 · 09/05/2020 13:58

Cherryade version was my fave

mumwon · 09/05/2020 13:58

@rafle so that's why the old wimpy use to be next to the laundromat in out town :) very clever

AwkwardPaws27 · 09/05/2020 14:01

Oh I have a major hankering for one now! But I need in one of my Nan's tall fluted sundae glasses or it won't be the same...

fuckinghellthisshit · 09/05/2020 14:02

I make them all the time!
Pineapple and lemonade spiders! Crushed pineapple stirred with lemonade then a dollop of vanilla icecream on top - so delicious.

mumwon · 09/05/2020 14:02

did you have milk bars in the UK? I grew up elsewhere in the 60's & they use to serve milkshakes (with a dollop or 2 of ice cream) & malted milkshakes (malted caramel my favourite)& ice cream sodas
today is definitely a reminder of those long hot summers Grin

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 09/05/2020 14:03

had one last night OP with my daughter! The very first one I had was on a day trip to scarborough ..The harbour bar. Be about 30years ago now!

BogRollBOGOF · 09/05/2020 14:03

I'm getting flashbacks to being in Poppins and legs stickining to the plastic faux leather bench seats in the 80s.

So luxurious and sophisticated Grin

anameIcallmyself · 09/05/2020 14:03

We call them spiders in Australia too. Here's why. The froth on the top looks a bit like an untidy web. Cobwebish.

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2020 14:06

We used to have a few italian cafes where I live the ice cream milk shakes were amazing

CakeCakeCake21 · 09/05/2020 14:09

@mumwon My dad, a former mod, has fond memories of milk bars in Essex in the 60s. There were not any in our town when I was growing up in the 80s. When people say milk bars now I think of the Clockwork Orange!

Zaphodsotherhead · 09/05/2020 14:09

Ooh, I've got some rhubarb and ginger gin, lemonade and ice cream...I might give that a go later!

Don't like coke much in any format, so coke floats are a no go, but a gin float I am right on board with!

TheSmelliestHouse · 09/05/2020 14:27

We still have them, DC love them, we call them ice cream floats.
However now I can't find sugary lemonade, only lemonade with sweeteners, they're kind of disgusting. I'm now on a mission to find sugar only lemonade, no sweetners, so we can have tsome decent floats.

catinb0oots · 09/05/2020 14:34

Coke float with GIN???

@IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece you've just changed my life

catinb0oots I was just thinking yesterday how unproductive I have been this last 5 weeks...I’m going to call changing your life a job well done Wink

Honestly try it, it’s epic!

Also delicious is raspberry or cherryade, vodka float

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/05/2020 14:40

MrsJayy
We still have an Italian cafe, Dino's, apparently the ice cream is amazing but I'm a weirdo and I don't really like ice cream, its too sweet and too cold.

safariboot · 09/05/2020 14:41

Yup. Local cafe in the late 90s/early 00s did them. Didn't have them all that often though because they were kind of pricey.

OhTheseSummerNiiiiights · 09/05/2020 14:41

The gin one sounds amazing 😱😱😱

AnneOfCloves · 09/05/2020 14:46

I love them! The important bit is to push your ice cream into the Coke (lemonade, lime soda, whatever) with your straw to make it froth.

Miltonj · 09/05/2020 15:06

I loved these. One time when me and my partner were younger, he had no milk left for his cup of tea, so he used a scoop of ice cream instead Envy now he genuinely loves this invention. I think it's grim but there ya go!

TheHighestSardine · 09/05/2020 15:16

@mon15 Cherryade! That's on the shopping list now.

Coke floats are great. Never thought of branching out, but now I've got a queue... I bet D&B will be good too
