Coke float

Did anyone else have these as a kid (in the 80s)? They were lush.

For some reason was just thinking about it. DS2 looked at me like I was batshit when I tried to explain it. I've got coke here but no vanilla ice cream.

Had them at Brownie disco. That and lurid pink and white coconut ice. Bounced off the walls for hours after that.

OculusThrift · 09/05/2020 13:15

Yes, usually with mr whippy style ice cream rather than a scoop. None of my DC like them when they've tried it though.

Doyoumind · 09/05/2020 13:16

We used to have them as a treat but I'm not sure I actually liked them.

Love them.

I still have one sometimes. I put ice cream in first for maximum fizzy froth then drink the Pepsi max and eat the ice cream with a long spoon.

DustyMaiden · 09/05/2020 13:22

Had them early 70s late 60s at the Phoenix Cafe

I can remember them being on the menu in the Wimpy of our Lakes town in the 70's. Can't remember being a fan. Tis an odd idea really.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 09/05/2020 13:27

Oh yes! Best with lemonade or limeade. Never tried them with coke. Will bear in mind next time I’m shopping.

Dialdownthedrama · 09/05/2020 13:30

I still love coconut ice but the sweetness makes your teeth ache. I don't know when they changed the recipe for Coke but I distinticly remember it seemed to leave a film on your teeth in the 80s Smile

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2020 13:30

Oh Limeade now you are talking Smile

JemimaPuddleCat · 09/05/2020 13:31

Irn Bru was best. They were really popular when I worked in Wimpy in the late 90s. I now need to source tall knickerbocker glory glasses so I can make them for my own kids - though it won't be the same without whippy ice cream.

WinWinnieTheWay · 09/05/2020 13:32

My mum would occasionally treat me and my brother to a trip into town. We would have dinner in Pizza Land and we would always have coke floats. They were amazing.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2020 13:32

I have never had one. Do you drink it or eat it? Grin It doesn't seem like a logical combination, putting food in your drink.

OnlyToWin · 09/05/2020 13:34

Not heard of a coke float but my grandad used to do a mean lemonade float.

Babdoc · 09/05/2020 13:36

I saw the title and thought OP was objecting to contributing to a kitty for buying cocaine on a night out! Grin
I’ve never heard of coke floats, and I was born in the 1950’s.

Ineedaduvetday · 09/05/2020 13:36

They were disgusting.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 09/05/2020 13:37

90s child here
Used to have lemonade with strawberry icecream too. DH has no idea what they are 🙈

maloofhoof · 09/05/2020 13:37

Also used to have them at Pizza land. Does anyone remember their takeaway boxes being round and made of styrofoam?

cheeseycracker · 09/05/2020 13:39

I loved them, a proper treat! My son (16) also loves them, they sell them in shake shack for an extortionate price but I'm such a softy I let him have one every now and then

midnightstar66 · 09/05/2020 13:40

We called them ice cream sodas. I used to get one at the local cafe along with a cheese toastie. Dc don't drink fizzy drinks so will never know the pleasure

CountFosco · 09/05/2020 13:41

I loved them as a child but the idea is quite repulsive now!

Iwantamarshmallowman · 09/05/2020 13:41

My nan used to make me a ginger beer float. The fiery ginger beer was hot and spicy followed by the cool sweet icecream it was delicious.

Popcat120 · 09/05/2020 13:41

Oh yes!
My dad used to make them for us in the 90s!
May have to get bits to make one now!

tempnamechange98765 · 09/05/2020 13:43

I'm a child of the 90's but I used to have them at my grandparents' house, mainly the cream soda ones. You've inspired me I'm going to add it to my shopping next week!

hellotoday27 · 09/05/2020 13:43

Has to be made with cream soda. Perfect.

OnlyToWin · 09/05/2020 13:44

@midnightstar66 that’s it - ice cream sodas! I had forgotten that name! Thanks 😊
