Best dance number in a film musical?

Ok - so a very specific question!
But watching Jesus Christ Superstar (the 70s film) and I have to nominate this:

Simon Zealotes

It's just got so much energy and passion.

I can think of some others - but am sure people will nominate them. Maybe something from A Chorus Line?

You’d love Newsies then as well Arseit. Very different in style, but incredible.

I’ve not seen it and I know the film as a whole is a car crash but my kind Ds tell me that Steven Macrae tapping as Skimbleshanks in Cats is out of this world.

Comefromaway · 04/05/2020 00:04

My kids tell me that should read.

Amazing tap dance The Lullaby of Broadway, even if the final effect is like a load of Hitler Youth off their heads on MDA

So many... where to begin?
Springtime for Hitler from The Producers. It's not the most brilliant, but it's so original and I just love the film.

Anything with Cyd Charisse!

The train staton dance scene at the end of Slumdog Milllionaire:

Luck be a Lady Tonight from Guys and Dolls. Love the whole film.

Donald O'Connor's 'make 'em laugh' routine (for want of a better word) in Singin' in the Rain.
He did it all in one go and was bed bound for a week afterwards.
A genius. Sorry, I can't do a link! If someone else could please it would be great!

Jayneisagirlsname · 04/05/2020 02:05

The barn raising from SBFSB is just wonderful. And Ann Miller doing Too Darn Hot just incredible!
I'll add White Christmas for the sheer joy of Vera Ellen's dancing in any of her numbers.

Here it is Elizabeth, it’s truly amazing. Such talent.

scaryreading · 04/05/2020 07:41

I like the car one at the beginning of Lala Land

And most of West Side story

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 04/05/2020 07:52

Agree with many of these but had to include
Steam Heat from The pyjama Game. Can't talk about musicals without including Bob Fosse!

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/05/2020 08:10

Thank you @Peonyinbloom!

Cheek To Cheek for me (beautiful choreography and that dress!), followed by Shall We Dance (Yul Brynner whirling her with abandon, another beautiful dress) and Mein Herr. Sexy, sleazy, I could watch it over and over.

I love musicals. I agree, a channel dedicated to musicals would be amazing. I wouldn’t get anything done though, I’m always ‘I’ll just watch this bit....then lose an hour or two Grin This thread is lovely, a ray of sunshine.

Stevienickssleeves · 04/05/2020 08:49

I love the Step in time dancing from mary poppins, the chimneysweeps dancing on chimney tops

There are lots of great programmes on musicals on Sky Arts

insertcaffeine · 04/05/2020 09:00

Another Day Of Sun from La La Land. Shot in one take!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/05/2020 09:04

I was going to say Dirty Dancing but actually I think I agree with Sunshine on Leith, the 500 Miles scene. It is joyful and infectious, and reminds me of DH (who loved the film and stage show).

Grease - Hand Jive

MeOldBamboo · 04/05/2020 09:07

Watched Strictly Ballroom yesterday. The Pasa Doble scene with Fran’s family is brilliant plus the final scene where the “new steps” are revealed and everyone joins in to the sound of “Love is in the Air” makes me weep. It’s so lovely!

Rainallnight · 04/05/2020 09:11

Mein Herr from Cabaret.

And not really a traditional musical dance number but I love the dance to ‘everything old is new again’ in All That Jazz, with the divine Anne Reinking.

Gatekeeper · 04/05/2020 09:23

I love this..Cyd Charisse is wonderful and I LOVE her outfit

I love Strictly Ballroom it is one of my favorite films, I took dd to see it when it was on at the West End and they caught the quirkiness of it beautifully.
